Germany Moves Closer to Violent Videogame Ban

It's hard to imagine but Germany authorities are starting to look serious about imposing a total ban on violent videogames in the country.

Backlash against violent videogames followed in the wake of a school shooting in the small German town of Winnenden, which resulted in the deaths of 15 people plus the shooter himself. Although videogames appeared to play a relatively minor role in the killer's life, the mere fact he played them was enough to trigger the predictable angry calls for tighter restrictions. German officials call for an outright ban [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/90667-Bavarian-Minister-Says-Games-as-Bad-as-Child-Porn] on violent games, saying that videogame addiction was a central component of "every situation in which a violent rampage has occurred."

But as the immediate crisis recedes, it appears that cooler heads are not prevailing. Support for a complete ban has actually snowballed to the point that the Interior Ministers of all 16 German states have joined together to seek a ban on the production and distribution of violent videogames. The Ministers want the restrictions implemented before the parliamentary elections which are scheduled for September 27.

As company would move [http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/06/05/germany039s-interior-ministers-ask-bundestag-total-ban-violent-games] rather than attempt to work within the confines of a ban, claiming that he's been approached by officials from England, Scotland, Austria and Singapore about expanding into their countries.

I have no idea how likely it is that this ban will be implemented nor whether it could be challenged in German courts, but I am surprised that the anti-videogame hysteria has reached this point at all. Germany has admittedly had some problems with impulse control over the last 100 years or so but attempting to enforce pacifism through a complete ban on violent videogames is swinging way too far in the other direction.

Whoa, I certainly hope this doesn't take effect.

What a massive step backwards for a Western country. I hate the "drugs & child pornography" comparison. I mean, really? Really!?!

Well, lets hope sanity prevails before they start burning books games.

My German friend on Steam was telling me about this. Apparently the parliment vote no on all of these Bans as they are generally much more level headed with nothing to gain from a ban. Only those that want the media spotlight and public support are pushing for these bans and thankfully they are a minority.

The sad thing from what I understand is, a lot of the heavy German censorship stems from the fear of nazism.

The country really doesn't want to bring back any signs of their National Socialist past and have outright banned fascist affiliations and ludicrous uses of the symbol. Even using a crossed out swastika or symbol of one being thrown in the trash ended up having charges brought up against people.

They really don't want people thinking they are a violent country, so according to German friends, anything that could incite it is suppressed.

It's a shame that legislators don't see that the suppressing freedom was what fascism is all about.

Don't you just love scare-mongering?

I really hope this doesn't get through. If it does, it will be nothing more than Germany trying to find a convenient scapegoat for existing problems. In every case where something like this has happened, videogames have been, at best, a minor influence. I'm unsure of the specifics of this particular case, but if it's anything like every other event like this, the guy who went on the rampage probably had pre-existing mental health issues, which just possibly might be more significant than the fact that he played games.

So no-one at all went on a rampage before the 1970s? no serial killers at all.

Nope, no such thing.

We can only prove whether or not violent videogames cause violence by looking to see if mushroom sales have risen since Mario was first released.

Banning video games? SIEG HAIL! Seriously, because ONE "gamer" murdered allot of people, the other MILLIONS of gamers suffer.

Oh yeah, did anyone actually find a definite scientific link between games and violence.

They'd have to ban violent movies too if this went through, but it will never happen.

O... they tried to ban paintball and when it failed they just turn to another scape-goat

But the fact now you can be arrested for saying Nazi in Germany or possessing or reproducing a Nazi swastika demonstrates they are alive and well.

Well, considering that modern Germans have mastered the art of keeping their heads firmly entrenched up their asses thats no really likely. Because this is coming from the same people that banned anything and everything that would remind them of the years 1936-1945.
