The best part is that other governments are lobbying to get Crytek to move to their country, if the ban passes. One man's loss is another man's gain, I suppose, and a stable company, with ~100+ great-paying jobs in a shit economy is a very big gain.

Apparently Germany is about to declare war on the gammers. I'm not surprised.
Everyone, mount your airships and equip your best weapons and armor. We're about to move out to raid their government.

But seriously, they're serious about this, instead of this being some fluke bill that happened to be gaming related? I know Germany has a history of post-nazi censorship and social control, but this is surprising for them.

Odd, in such a bad economy, Germany are so willing to ban these games, that they are putting thousands of people out of jobs because video game retail will be pulled back because there will only be two games left to sell. The government won't get the tax on the sales so it's their loss really.

What do they count as violent? Is Mario violent? Is Burnout violent?

The sad thing from what I understand is, a lot of the heavy German censorship stems from the fear of nazism.

The country really doesn't want to bring back any signs of their National Socialist past and have outright banned fascist affiliations and ludicrous uses of the symbol. Even using a crossed out swastika or symbol of one being thrown in the trash ended up having charges brought up against people.

They really don't want people thinking they are a violent country, so according to German friends, anything that could incite it is suppressed.

It's a shame that legislators don't see that the suppressing freedom was what fascism is all about.
In trying to put aside their brutal past, they are repeating it. This is the great irony of their methods.

Mario encourages violence against goombas, koopas, and a variety of other species by stereotyping them as inhuman monsters who merely want to cause struggle. It must be banned!

I can see them saying that head stomping and high speed crashes increase after someone plays one of those games...

Germany should probably take the threat of video games more seriously, if they oppress games, they will lose their standing as a major power.

It make sound silly, but it's a serious thing.

For fear of being reported or flamed or whatever, I shouldn't reply to this, but I shall...

I didn't realise Hitler, Judas, Pilot, The Devil, Stalin [insert other bad people from the past] were such avid gaming enthusiasts...I think I'm gonna buy an xbox just too see their gamerscore and look them up on the PS3 to see how many trophies they have in the "hey guys, lets kill people in real life" games, cos by the German Official's logic, they've gotta be pretty high in the Global Rankings.

Apparently the parliment vote no on all of these Bans as they are generally much more level headed with nothing to gain from a ban.
They have a LOT more to lose than to gain from this that's for sure. Crytek is "one of the world?s leading independent development studios for interactive entertainment with its headquarters in Frankfurt am Main" [1], which indicates that it probably generates A LOT of revenue, stimulating the German economy. That's generally a good reason for a parliament to vote no to bans like these.

Enforced pacifism.

There's a neat little paradox if ever there was.
You'd think the last 60 years would have taught Germans (especially those in Berlin and the East) that you need more freedom rather than less for a prosperous society. Those who ignore history etc...

For some reason I picture a giant pile of burning games.
I picture empty cities, seriously how many people can say that they don't play atleast some games that are 'violant', on different levels of time consumption.

I doubt this will get through. It's not enough for just some people within the government too demand that video games are banned. The whole thing need too go trough a process and i doubt it will get through.
It has support from the Interior Ministers of all 16 German states...

I hate these bullshit crusades.

Excellent! :)

Elections are coming up and something has to be done about all those violent kids, right? Running amok and playing video games have one thing in common. They're utterly incomprehensible to older generations.

btw. Germany is not really facist. It's just that the notion that adults should decide for themselves has never really caught on over here.
