PETA Wants Michael Vick Dropped From Madden NFL Cover Vote

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals want Michael Vick's name crossed of the list of potential cover athletes for the upcoming Madden NFL 2012 [http://www.amazon.com/Madden-NFL-12-Xbox-360/dp/B003O6EAM6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1301606719&sr=8-1].

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is known for two things. One, he's a pretty good football player. Two, he ran an illegal dog-fighting ring and personally took part in the horrific torture and execution of dogs who failed to adequately perform. Because of the first point, he's one of 16 players who could be voted by fans onto the front of the Madden NFL 2012 box, but because of the second, PETA wants him taken out of the running.

It doesn't appear likely to happen, though. "I can tell you we've already received the letters from our good friends at PETA urging us to take him out of the bracket," EA Sports president Peter Moore said at the World Congress of Sports in Miami. "I personally believe, and this is personal commentary right now, that Michael served his time. He's had a tremendous season."

That may be true, but I'm a little surprised that EA isn't put off by the optics of the situation. Great football player or not, Michael Vick is a first-class piece of garbage who spent years getting his kicks torturing and killing dogs. With all the talent in the NFL to choose from, why EA would invite a potential backlash by even giving a sideways glance to such a notorious scumbag is completely beyond me.

But if PETA really wants Vick to suffer, it shouldn't just withdraw its objection, it should have its members voting for his selection. The infamous "Madden NFL 2004 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madden_NFL#Madden_Curse], Vick broke his leg in the following pre-season and was out for 12 games.

Good luck, Mike!

PETA, alot of people want things, but very few among them actually get things.

Speaking of the Madden Curse, EA is supposedly making a comedy movie based on it.

You know PETA, I didn't really care about his running for Madden NFL, but since you decided to rear your ugly head...

I guess what I'm trying to get at is: "Me no like Vic, but me no like PETA even more."

Well, it's not like EA is famous for its heartfelt sensitivity regarding its PR...

Still kind of split on this. I can't decide whether I hate PETA or Vick more.

I have a feeling people are going to vote for Vick just to spite PETA.

As much as I am disgusted by vick and his actions. (I feel he should have been in prison till 2030, if not longer), this isn't fair.

He should be judged based on his actions as a football player, not his personal life.

I say we disqualify everyone from the vote except Drew Brees! Geaux Saints!

No, wait, maybe we should let people vote for their favourite choice, no matter what they've done in the past.

OK yeah, the dog fighting was bad. You can allow that to forever affect your view of him, or you can get past it like he did. He's not my favorite player or anything, but I'd really like to see a case where someone does something bad, goes to jail and fixes themselves, and then is allowed to move past it once they're back out.

Isn't "why would EA invite the backlash" a bit of a stupid question at this point?

I mean... isn't that EXACTLY what they did with the whole MoH Taliban debacle?

Hmmm If anyone OTHER than PETA had pointed this out id be apt to agree, but agreeing with them would just make me feel dirty....

This is why I am a fan of PETA, people for the eating of tasty animals. This organization doesn't have enough of a track record to be pointing fingers at anyone. And like they said, the man served his time, that should be all there is to it.

I'm against animal cruelty and all, but I can't side with PETA. They run ads warning drivers about how leaving their dog in a hot car in summer can kill it...in the middle of winter.
Sometimes I wonder if anyone at PETA owns a calendar...

PETA wants a lot of things. It should get very few of them. This is not one of them. Yes, what he did was atrocious. Yes, I believe that the man should burn in some form of inferno for what he did. However, using his namesake and likeness is none of PETA's business.

I thought the very same thing about them voting him to get on the cover. If they really don't like him, put him there so the curse gets him again.

Though, I'm an Eagles fan... so I've mixed feelings about my suggestion

I'm agreeing with most of the posts on this...

It's like not wanting a George Foreman grill because you're a pacifist or whatever, or not liking Earthworm Jim because the guys who wrote it is a douchebag.

Though I don't agree with his actions, He has (I assume) served his sentence handed to him by the law so therefore shouldn't be punished any further unless hes broken the law again. Of course thats not really me to decide as I don't like football nor play the games.

you know, i'm not usually one to come around and tell you who to hate (as i am an equal opportunity hater, i try to not only hate everything on an even level, but allow others to decide what is hate-worthy themselves), but i must say... michael vick is one man. PETA is a damned organization filled with thousands of equally-ignorant and hypocritical individuals. i think the choice is clear here.

egh PETA is a millions times more evil in my opinion. Vick just some douche who got busted dog fighting like hundreds of people do (just dont make the news most times). So in the end I will choose the third option of I dont really care this doesnt concern me I havnt bought or even played a madden game for quite a few years now.
