Battlefield Producer Thinks Most Sandbox Games Are "Boring"

Not every game should try to be a sandbox game, says the EA DICE producer.

The wonderful thing about sandbox games is that they give players the chance to go where they want and do things at their own pace. They're not for everyone however, notably Battlefield 3 [http://www.amazon.com/Battlefield-3-Limited-Xbox-360/dp/B003O6G5TW/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1302002518&sr=1-1] executive producer Patrick Bach, who thinks that in most cases, sandbox games are kind of dull.

Bach said that with a few exceptions, sandbox games were "hardcore, boring, hard to get into, [and] not very popular." He didn't specify what those exceptions were, other than the sandbox-style games DICE had built over the last few years. Bach indicated that the upcoming Battlefield 3 would more closely resemble the likes of Call of Duty than the more-open Bad Company games. He thought that sandbox gameplay was just one way of making games, and that it was a mistake for all developers to aim for that goal, as then no one would make campaigns.

Bach's comments about the sandbox games seem a little strange; not because he doesn't like them, but because he seems to be talking about a very specific breed of game. It seems like the majority of sandbox games - or certainly the most well-known ones - have campaigns in addition to their open worlds. Exceptions exist, of course - Minecraft isn't overflowing in the story department, for example - but open-world series like the Elder Scrolls, Just Cause and Grand Theft Auto all have campaign modes as well as the ability to roam around.

Battlefield 3, which will most assuredly not be a sandbox game, is thought to be scheduled for release on Xbox 360, PC, and PS3 later this year.

A producer of a shooter finds sandbox games "boring". There is a joke in there somewhere.

Personally, I don't like sandbox games, and seeing someone else at least contesting them makes me =).

And yes, this decision will make the campaign seem more like Call of Duty.

Wait what now? It will be *more* like CoD than BC2? Meh!
That was kinda my initial reaction and worry - it's not like BC2 was a free-roaming experience or anything :/

Should this say "He thought sandbox gameplay was just one way of making games,"?

It's hard to disagree on this point, but different people find different things boring, repetitive or over-used.

so, GTA and Minecraft are not popular at all are they. silly FPS dev, making outrageous claims. and i see he's jumping on the CoD bandwagon to try to make the game sell better. that's just lowered my expectations a tad.

So battlefield 3 will be a CoD clone? That's all I needed to know about that.
Hardly. Here's how DICE deals with those fucking quickscopers.

I don't give a toss about quickscopers because I don't play multiplayer

Its nice they just spit in the face of most RPG gamers, RTS gamers and everyone else who enjoys a good sandbox experience. I can hope he really is just trying to get the game to sell better, but I doubt it.

. . . and it's because of all the CoD clones that we STALKER players stick to our illustrious zone.

There's something satisfying about being able to complete the single player storyline at your own pace, whenever you feel like getting around to it . . . being able to explore the game world to your heart's content - you get the most out of your money. It's one thing when a game takes roughly 8-12 hours to beat; it's another when you can take 12+ months if you'd like.

This right here.

That singular statement has made me not want to buy this game straight away.

Well that sucks. The last thing a Battlefield game should feel like is CoD. They need to send it the other way, open up the maps a lot more from Bad Company

I think the sort of open world games that he had in mind may have been like Farcry 2 which was boring as fuck after the first few hours.
