Correct me if im wrong, but none of the Battlefield games were exactly "sandbox", where they?

Also,

Bach indicated that the upcoming Battlefield 3 would more closely resemble the likes of Call of Duty than the more-open Bad Company games.

Why do developers feel the need to open their big mouths and spout crap like this? Thanks to the "more like COD" bit, I will not be preordering, even if he's just talking about the single player.

That was kinda my initial reaction and worry - it's not like BC2 was a free-roaming experience or anything :/
Yes, it was as linear as Modern Warefare really. Perhaps he just means they'll be a stronger story presence? :/

The beginning of BC2 was pretty much on rails, as was the end. Not even slightly sandbox... Only the dried seabed level came close to that.

I do remember him saying he wanted a share of CoD's market...

Didn't Bandai Namco say they wanted a piece of CoD's market as well with Assault Horizon? Waiting for the next Ace Combat installment to be a rail shooter with QTEs for maneuvers.

So battlefield 3 will be a CoD clone? That's all I needed to know about that.
Hardly. Here's how DICE deals with those fucking quickscopers.

Lol that sniper had line of sight on them virtually the entire time.

Its nice they just spit in the face of most RPG gamers, RTS gamers and everyone else who enjoys a good sandbox experience. I can hope he really is just trying to get the game to sell better, but I doubt it.
What what what what what?

RTS games aren't sandbox AT ALL. Maybe 4X games can be kind of considered sandbox, but your standard RTS puts you in a very limited area with set specific missions, and on completion you simply move to a new limited area, sometimes with time limits. That's as linear as it gets.

And what do you mean you doubt he's just trying to get the game to sell better? Do you think spitting in the face of RPG gamers somehow is more important to him than selling his game?

---

Anyway, to all the haters out there, he's not attacking your favorite game necessarily. The heart of the statement is something I'd have to agree with. Sandbox games can often leave a player lost or confused about the progression of the story if not done right. Without linear story to hold the players' hands it is much more difficult to keep the players attention. I can think of several moments where a buggy sandbox game left me confused as to what was the side quest and what was the main quest, and in either case I didn't necessarily know where on the map I was supposed to look.

It doesn't mean your favorite game is bad. It only means that sandbox games in general are harder to make interesting story-wise. The gems out there are so good because they can capture your attention anyway.

Wat?
Less open ended in BC2?

In what way BC2 is open ended?

And to people in the forums how can you exactly say it's less battlefield 2 and more modern warfare. BF2 got that experience point, rank , and unlock years before MW even exist so if anything MW is copying BF2 not the other way around.

The only thing different between the BF and CoD is map size and vehicles

Haha! So this Bach guy comes in to take a piss at Sand-Box games, which are apparently "Unpopular" (to which I say "Lol, Minecraft XD") and inadvertently loses a good chunk of his fanbase by debasing his own game?

Comedy gold.

Is he being a troll or something? Sandbox genre not popular?

I hope that when he said that the game will be more COD then BC2 he is talking about the campaign, and from the videos released we could already figure that out. They are VERY scripted.

*sigh* why do devs like this need to open their big stupid mouth... you only piss off your customers when you trash talk anything, and isn't your customers the most important thing?

Just so long as the multiplayer is as open as BC2 and I will be fine.

I guess from a normal FPS dev perspective you never want to mess with the flow of action, this is why most FPS are single barrel corridors with limited ,IMO, level design. The again IMO crysis was boring as it was poorly paced.

Which are incidentally two of the best things about Battlefield, as in, some of the many reasons I don't play COD.

Cool story bro but i still reckon Sand-box based games will always be better than most linear games such as cod since that game is predictable as the last one.

dont get worked up, CoD haters.

he only meant a more linear campaign model.

and from the video near the top of page one, id say it still looks pretty fucking cool.
