Fan Mod Gets San Andreas in Your GTA IV

Niko, my cousin! Want to come and ride some big American jetpacks?

As nice as Liberty City is in Grand Theft Auto IV, there's not a lot of space for things like farms, deserts, and secret military bases. That was really the purview of GTA IV's predecessor, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which had the most expansive map of any GTA game to date. But an ambitious group of modders has decided that there's no need for the two to remain separate, and is rebuilding San Andreas in the rather better looking GTA IV engine.

The project - called "Project AndReAGE," a fusion of "Andreas" and "RAGE," the name of the GTA IV engine - is a work in progress, but as you can see from the video, it's still looking pretty darn good. According to a recent update, the map is about 50% done, although as the thirteen-person team has cut the map into 24 different pieces, so some areas are more complete than others. The team is also working hard to bring San Andreas' vehicles to the mod, so hopefully players will be able to cruise around the map with a jetpack.

You can see more images from the mod, as well as keep up with its progress, on its development thread [http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=465636&st=0]. Fingers crossed, it won't be too long before a demo - or better yet, the mod itself - hits the internet.

Okay... so a bunch of modders have beaten Rockstar to the smart thing to do?
You disappoint me, Rockstar. This is what I have wanted since GTA IV came out.
San Andreas was easily the best GTA game I've played, and I'd buy a remake without a second thought >.>
I'll have to keep an eye on this one. And look into getting GTA IV for PC >.>

Why wasn't this done sooner? San Andreas was easily the better game of the two in my opinion. Hell, I didn't even really like GTA IV.
Maybe some day I'll buy GTA IV during a Steam sale, then I will recall this mod, and I will be glad. As long as Rockstar doesn't shut it down... They can't do that, can they? They better not.

*attempts to find his lower jaw*
Can I get a Hell Yeah?
And seriously Rockstar, if you actually remade San Andreas with the RAGE engine, it would be the best selling GTA game yet.
Seriously, go do it, WE ALL WANT IT

I won't deny that it looks really good, I'd buy GTA IV for a mod like that, but I doubt that they'll ever finish the mod since the majority of super-cool ambitious mods are abandoned about halfway.

THANK GOD! Me and my friends have been discussing how awesome that would be forever. I would pay full-price for a mod like that.

San Andreas is by far my favorite GTA.

Or alternatively, get a cease and desist order.

This looks amazing - I can't wait to see the finished product.

That is, if there is one. Which I sure hope there will be.

You've brought back the Chrono Trigger/Star Fox memories. You've made it to the enemies list Krunk.

Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait Can't wait...

seriously, whoever came up with this idea is GENIUS!

why wait for Rockstar to make the next best GTA when you can just re-make the best one on the newest engine!

I say let me at it... if it's available to run through multi-player, I have much to plan....

heh heh heh....

That's awesome! Though where's all the colour gone? It looks like another bland 360/PS3 gen game, I remember it being ubervibrant which is kinda what made it such a fun place to explore. The hue variance meant you could actually tell the difference between places whereas this seems to suffer from the GTA4-everything-looks-the-damned-same syndrome.

Pretty cool.
San Andreas was a great game, i was quite unhappy when i found out you can't really "pimp" your cars or have planes that shoot rockets in GTA IV
But that map was unbelievably huge... i can't imagine how much work has been and will be put into this.
