Portal 2 DLC Now Available for Only $140

If you're aching for more Portal 2, you can now get more Portal 2 - but only if you have a special $140 controller.

Back in January, Valve and gaming peripheral maker Razer jointly announced [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106792-Exclusive-Version-of-Portal-2-Developed-for-PC-Motion-Controller] that the developer would be making special Portal 2 content to take advantage of Razer's motion-sensitive "Hydra" controller.

As of today, Gamers can now pick up the special Hydra content pack for the low, low price of absolutely free. That is, it's free if you own a Razer Hydra. The Razer Hydra, by the way, costs $140 (but to be fair, it does come with a free copy of Portal 2).

According to the Razer Hydra site [http://www.razerzone.com/minisite/hydra/portal2], the Sixense MotionPack DLC is comprised of levels designed specifically to "harness the full capabilities" of the gadget: "Intuitively reach out and interact in Portal Test Chambers using the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device in complete three-dimensions; fire portals at exact, accurate angles and throw Weighted Companion Cubes with the right force, the way it's meant to be played."

I'm not even really sure how the dual-"nunchuck" setup works with the Hydra, or what the purpose of the glowing ball is - if it isn't just the sensor bar styled to look cool, of course. But more of the superb Portal 2 can hardly be a bad thing, and truth be told I'm interested to see how Valve and Razer have designed content for explicit use of a motion controller.

I'm just not $140 worth of interested. But I bet somewhere out there, someone is enough of a Portal fan to go for it. Of course, it's not like the Hydra can only be used with Portal, so you could always rationalize it as an investment.

I'm actually interested in the controller, seems to have a lot of good potential if things were made with it's compatibility in mind.

I wouldn't pay $140 just to use it with Portal 2 of course, that would just be the added incentive.

Well, the controller is pretty close to a modified Wiimote + nunchuck, so, people praising this thing and hating the Wiimote would be lying to themselves. I'd still pick one of these though. For the record, I loved the Wiimote... when it was well implemented, like in Metroid Prime Trilogy.

This controller could be worth while.... if only they had more than one game for it. That just makes a cool, but way overly expensive copy of Portal 2. Crazy shit. Now, if this controller got more industry support, it could be worth it. I must confess, the Wiimote and Nunchuck combination was fun and worth while as long it was implemented properly (which it wasn't most of the time). It made FPS on the Wii a lot of fun, Like Metroid Prime for exampe.

More support and you got me.

I was looking into getting one of these a while back, thought it would be cool. Can't justify the money yet.

I must say, that looks super precise. Hmmm, if the list of supported games grows, I'm sold. or if they can institute a system that makes it so you can customize game controls with it, kind of like my Logitech G13. I'm gonna keep my eye on this.

Edit: it already supports 125 games, and they are going to release profiles as games come out, and there is software in the works that will allow you to customize controls to motions.... Guess I know my next investment, haha. From that CodBlops video, it's super precise, which is awesome. The only real downside to the console counterparts.

C'mon you fanboys eat it up! You know you need more Portal in your life!

OT: Razer is all about quality so maybe this would be worth the money, but as of right now I have no interest in Portal 2

At its heart I see no difference to dropping the cash for this and dropping the cash for a steering wheel.

Kudos for the innovation (and bravo for the intelligence and bravery to create exclusive DLC), but for me to entertain something like this it would need a vast catalogue of software to take advantage of. Come to think of it, a game that I'm actually interested in too...

Likely it will be a forgotten piece of tech that I went "interesting" at once.

Razer makes some really nice stuff, but I'm not shelling for another motion product, I've got a Wii already and that doesn't get used enough as it is.

Ah the gaming mouse industry, it's practically extortion. I find it hilarious to see people flaunt their 100 euro mice when the best pro-Starcraft players use Microsoft mice they bought for 10 quid.

This however is a new direction, rather than appealing to the gamer who thinks skill comes with equipment, now they're moving towards capitalizing on the hardcore fans, just like that WoW mouse.

Still, at least you're getting a damn awesome game with it.

It is a bit wiimote and nunchuck-y, but it seems to work pretty well, as in you don't need to flail like a moron to do things. Most of the motions seem to be minimal for maximum effect, looking at that vid and the guys hands. This controller would be well suited to an FPS. Dual joysticks for movement, the closest to mouse like accuracy a console has gotten to. This controller has potential for plenty of games, I hope devs realize it.

I'm keeping my eye on this and waiting for the first wave of suckers buyers to test it out for me. It could make for a novel alternate control device for some of my space combat games once we can customize the input. Or it could flop.

I'll probably get a low-content post warning, but...

All my feelings summed up in one gif.

I would too, assuming it begins to be supported by other high profile games, and not just valve ones.

It already supports 125 games, and they are going to release new profiles for new games. And are making software to customize the motion controls how you want, meaning you can use it for any game you feel like in the future.
