Brienne Of Tarth Will Be (Literally) Huge In Game Of Thrones

When you're casting for a large, strong, woman, who do you look for? A really tall model, duh.

It's safe to say that Game of Thrones was a pretty resounding success with its first season. How resounding a success? Resounding enough that it got <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109377-HBO-Renews-Game-of-Thrones-for-Second-Season>renewed for a second season right after its premiere aired. That said, the death of major characters means that new ones are getting brought in while the second season films in Ireland this summer, and it's been announced who is going to play Brienne of Tarth: Statuesque model <a href=http://unitedagents.co.uk/gwendoline-christie>Gwendoline Christie.

It'll actually interesting to see how the Brienne will physically look in the show, since Christie's natural good looks don't quite match with her character's description:

Brienne is abnormally large and strong for a woman, and exceeds most men in size. She has large, very blue eyes that appear trusting and guileless, but they are her only attractive feature. She is extremely broad-shouldered, but has virtually no bust. Her face is broad and coarse, with a nose that has been broken several times. Her mouth is too wide, with prominent and crooked teeth and lips so plump they seem swollen. Her hair is the color of dirty straw and her face is mottled with freckles.

Of course, it helps that Christie stands at six-foot-three-inches, so she'll have the size bit down. So far, the series has been pretty faithful to representing characters as they appear in the books, so it seems likely that Christie will have a lot of make-up work done on her when she appears on our TVs.

There are worse choices out there, and in the age of awesome special effects, I think she could work really well as Brienne, especially with the height and hair colour being suitable anyway, as well as some freckles.

Gee guys, way to take forever I had this up on the Winter Is Coming user group like, two days ago. :p

I'm very pleased with this casting, uglying up a person is fairly easy, its much harder to make a short person, look tall. Actually, I think the tall part is much more important that being ugly to Brienne, because in a feudal society, being a strong, large female who like to fight and generally acts like a man, would be a huge issue as far as being an attractive match.

Submit it to our news tips or just DM one of us next time. We don't look through user groups/forum posts for news (we wouldn't get anything else done). We'd give you credit, too, if you provide us with the news!

Ugly-fying shouldnt be too hard, even though shes pretty.

Also I might be an Extra in season 2!

>.< They need to cast Jaqen H'gar already. I refuse to be excited until that's done.

Nice, I hope you've been growing a beard, it will probably help your chances enormously.

I think she has the look of what I imagine Brienne to be like, even though the features aren't naturally there.

I just want to know who's going to be cast as Stannis.

Wait, she's HOW tall?

They definitely got that "exceeds most men in size" bit right. Crickey.

Maybe it is because I like the character, but some reason never thought of her as ugly, just plain and worn by war. I think the casting is fine (size was big concern) and tv magic do the rest.

That's awesome! One of the few times in life you can get excited at the prospect of being decapitated or otherwise dying horribly.

Anyway, I hope they get a season for every book, that would be amazing.

Martin said that she looks a lot different than the headshot up there. She is to quote Martin "Brienne of Tarth". So now all we have to look for is Davos and Stannis.

I hope Mark Strong gets the role of Stannis. Oh Seven let it be Mark Strong

Edit: Oh yea I forgot Melisandra still needs to be cast.

I heard a rumour (on the group) that Christopher Eccleston is getting a part, and may may may be Stannis. I don't know, but I think that'd be a decent casting. Also the picture you posted there is more what I imagined Davos looking like than Stannis.

OT: I like it, although she is quite pretty. Still, there's little that make-up can't do these days!

You sure?

Here is Davos for comparison

I think Mark Strong would be perfect but I know that they will cast the perfect man so I will accept whoever is chosen.
edit: I can't seem to get the stannis pic up here is the html

Fair play, it's more the mental image that I've developed over the books so far.

I'm in the middle of book 3, I'm enjoying her story and the other character she is with, quite interesting. I always pictured her as the football coach on Glee, only younger.
