She's pretty attractive.

Though from her picture she looks like a tiny person.

Dammit, I need to read faster. I'm only a quarter of the way through book 1

Sweet and only a couple of days away until book five. Suddenly Westeros is a big deal again.

The casting seems good here but I am more interested in: Stannis, Melisandre and Davos.

As far as I'm concerned the actress has the look down to a T. Sure, she's not fucking quasi deformed and has a more realistic "homely" look, but I don't care.

And yes, I said realistic. Because it is actually quite hard to find a girl that is so downright atrocious looking as how martin describes the Brienne of the books. With this actress you can easily take her make-up off.

I mean, fuckin-a, take a look at exhibit number 1 in Kate-Moss, and actual working model taken from a casual angle (bad angle?) with no makeup on:

And that's beautiful to a lot of folk.

Now, let's look at exhibit number 2 which is a large picture of a bunch of young working models with no makeup on: http://thegloss.com/fashion/louis-vuitton-models-without-make-up-spot-the-alien/ (the image is just too huge to post here)

I think we're fairly safe with their pick.

They probably won't play up the ugly too much. I'm more concerned about how they're going to make her look muscular and convincing in a fight, as that girl is all skin and bone.

Tyrion Lannister, the Dwarf was supposed to be hideously deformed and they've had Peter Dinklage, a quite handsome man play him. He's amazing for the role and I don't mind that's he's not nearly as ugly as he was supposed to be.

They aren't going to make her ugly, just like they didn't make Tyrion ugly, its not exactly a big deal. If anything, they'll probably make her pretty hot, this is Tv we're talking about, that's just what they do.

I think she'll be pretty awesome. The height is there, and the general appearance and hair color - uglification should be pretty easy with makeup. I hope she starts lifting weights, though - she's pretty slender, and Brienne is a muscle-y beast.

her size and mannishness will be enough, they didn't make Tyrion actually grotesque so it makes sense that they wouldn't do it for Brienne either.

as for the muscles...she'll probably be in plate armour the whole time so it won't be that much of an issue.

there's also a potential casting for Asha http://www.spotlight.com/interactive/cv/F90159.html ...which has apparently been renamed as 'Yara', presumably to avoid confusion with Osha. Im kind of meh on the name change but then again I got used to Robin Arryn pretty fast.

She's kind of pretty for the role but i guess makeup can, uhh, make up for that. Did anyone else picture Brienne as Aveline from Dragon Age 2, or was that just me?

Brienne is abnormally large and strong for a woman, and exceeds most men in size. She has large, very blue eyes that appear trusting and guileless, but they are her only attractive feature. She is extremely broad-shouldered, but has virtually no bust. Her face is broad and coarse, with a nose that has been broken several times. Her mouth is too wide, with prominent and crooked teeth and lips so plump they seem swollen. Her hair is the color of dirty straw and her face is mottled with freckles.
In my opinion along with her height this is the key characteristic when it comes to casting Brienne, so I think Gwendoline Christie looks great for the part. Brienne may be a big, ugly, kick ass warrior women but her characters always seemed like a puppy at heart to me, one that's been kicked a few too many times, and with the eyes to match. I mean she really is a damn puppy, I don't know if this topic is supposed to be spoiler free or not but she's basically always following somebody important around, and even when given her own task she goes off at it on her own with cute puppy dog determination.

And It's not like she's mean or violent, rather she was just a girl who liked to rough house with the boys and had the misfortune of being better than them at it. That's why I'm worried that if you try and find an actor that is big and ugly she'll just look plain angry or mean.

This.

Seriously, a Brienne shouldn't be too hard. I mean making someone tall really isn't hard...

My only concerns with this are,
A) Is she gonna be able to act? Some of the scene's that involve Brienne will need a LOT of heavy handed acting, to really suggest some of the things that aren't pointed out clearly in dialogue.

B) Nit picking, but I sort of expected her to have a flatter wider nose. @_@

But as long as they make sure Davos and Jagen come out well represented I don't care =D

I love me some tall women. :D

Anyway, the real question is whether or not she can act. Looks like she can.

Anyone raging over the choice needs to get their heads examined. It's like raging over the casting of Tyrion. Peter Dinklage makes this show possible. Putting him in makeup for 5 hours a day wouldn't improve his already stellar performance. Hardcore fanboys also need to realize the show had a budget. I was somewhat disappointed over the light battle scenes but hiring hundreds of extras, dressing them in armor and swords, hiring hundreds of horses and trainers, and renting or buying all the extra gear for one battle would have eaten the budget for the whole season. Make up is expensive too. I have a feeling season 2 will have a lot more money to toss around.

As for randomly added sex scenes.. How old was Catelyn Stark in the book? How old is she in the show? Within the first few chapters of the book shes walking around butt naked. Michelle Fairley is an attractive woman but I'd rather see someone a tad bit younger in their birthday suit.

They definitely got that "exceeds most men in size" bit right. Crickey.
True. But she's still rather slim at 6'3" and only 167 lbs (76Kg.) Still with enough padding and wearing plate armor(re:Aluminum) all the time she could pull it off.

In all fairness Tyrion Lannister was supposed to be butt-ugly in the books, but Peter Dinklage totally nailed his character to the point where virtually every line he said was golden.

ppl get way too caught up in physical description(especially their own interpretation of them) of characters and totally ignore the essence, which is what actually matters to the storytelling.

it's like with cersei, in the book you read about her being referred to as "a very beautiful women" so ppl picture what each of them would consider a very beautiful women...then they see lena headey and go "pfft! that's not the most perfect women I can imagine, obviously this is a shit casting that will ruin the series!"

I feel the same way... what books are we talking about? What's this show? Why are people so excited about a tall model?

How...I mean, fighting in huge battles and stuff...it's ...why's it so important to so many...how...how do magnets work?

Just like the black fella from Thor, I don't care if her physical features don't match, what matters is if her presence and characterization are accurate. This is one of those bizarre situations where I'm defending the casting of a female role that isn't at one end of Hollywood's attractiveness scale or the other.

Me too! But I'm guessing most people here have read the books before they played that game. Nevertheless, I think it's obvious that Aveline was ispired by Brienne -just like Dragon Age was inspired by A Song Of Ice And Fire.
