Brienne Of Tarth Will Be (Literally) Huge In Game Of Thrones

Huh, well, I think they can make it work. Unlike those who read the book, I listened to all three of them and I found that the narrator (Roy Dotrice), who was absolutely amazing, did a phenomenal job of adding an extra dimension to the characters. The impression I got of Brienne was that she was a very large, masculine woman and it wasn't any sort of a near thing. That is, Martin wanted to make sure no one saw her as some sort of hot Amazon-esque warrior princess.

Really, even if you've already read the books and seen the first season, I highly, highly recommend the first three books. The fourth was narrated by someone different and I totally lost interest, however.

ppl get way too caught up in physical description(especially their own interpretation of them) of characters and totally ignore the essence, which is what actually matters to the storytelling.

Just like the black fella from Thor, I don't care if her physical features don't match, what matters is if her presence and characterization are accurate. This is one of those bizarre situations where I'm defending the casting of a female role that isn't at one end of Hollywood's attractiveness scale or the other.

They aren't going to make her ugly, just like they didn't make Tyrion ugly, its not exactly a big deal. If anything, they'll probably make her pretty hot, this is Tv we're talking about, that's just what they do.
Tyrion isn't as deformed as the book made him to be, but he's still a dwarf, which is the main physical characteristic of his addressed in the book. In Brienne's case, POV characters often reflect on how ugly she is. If they made her hot, they'd have to rewrite her from "subversion of the Eowyn/Mulan/girl-pretending-to-be-a-warrior story" to making her a straight example of that. And change her character. And so on.

TL;DR: Making Tyrion not ugly didn't impact his character. Making Brienne attractive would require her character to be rewritten.

This does make some sense. It's easier to make someone fat as opposed to tall. I haven't met very many large, tall women, with an attractive face. From what I understand, the series has been pretty faithful to the books, so I'm unsure if they're just trying to replace her character with someone really hot.

In all fairness Tyrion Lannister was supposed to be butt-ugly in the books, but Peter Dinklage totally nailed his character to the point where virtually every line he said was golden.
Thank you. I was about to make a similar post challenging anyone to try to claim Peter Dinklage was miscast because he wasn't ugly enough.

They definitely got that "exceeds most men in size" bit right. Crickey.
True. But she's still rather slim at 6'3" and only 167 lbs (76Kg.) Still with enough padding and wearing plate armor(re:Aluminum) all the time she could pull it off.
Say what? Dude, I weigh that much on a bad month and I'm only 172 cm!

But damn that's a whole lot of woman there!

Tyrion being a dwarf is enough to set him apart in a medieval kingdom, just like being a 6'3" and clad in armour would do for a woman. That alone should be enough to distinguish her as an outcast, just the same as it does with Tyrion. I kind of doubt they'll focus on making her look pretty though.

it's like with cersei, in the book you read about her being referred to as "a very beautiful women" so ppl picture what each of them would consider a very beautiful women...then they see lena headey and go "pfft! that's not the most perfect women I can imagine, obviously this is a shit casting that will ruin the series!"
The thing is that how Tyrion looks does not have that much to do with his character (besides that fact that hes a dwarf of course). Brienne is manly. She is physically strong, she has to be. And her (bad) looks is part of what makes her somewhat uncertain of herself in feminine settings. If she is ugly betty ugly...its just FAAAAAKE. And that makes her character fake. It will ruin her. I was afraid TV might not have room for an ugly person, I'll not judge until I've seen it in action but they'll have to work hard not to ruin Brienne for me.

Seems like a sound choice to me, although I haven't actually gotten around to reading the second book yet. I have noticed, however, that GRRM seems to greatly enjoy making 80% of his characters homely or downright hideous. It's a welcome change from the near-constant parade of square jaws and ample chests in most media, but he also tends to overdo it a bit. So even if the character is ugly, their choice of casting seems reasonable, because on average, people in general are far better looking than they are described in the books.

Which makes you 5'6". She's the same weight at 6'3"(193cm). Therefore slim.

They didn't get Tyrion right. The only thing they got right about the appearance of the character is his size. He's supposed to be incredibly ugly...

I lost my source for this, but I recall that George RR Martin is involved with all of the casting for Game of Thrones and that he said that Gwendoline Christie sans makeup was exactly how he imagined Brienne looked like. If anyone else has seen this as well, post the link.

Edit: Aha! I found it! [http://www.tvovermind.com/game-of-thrones/game-thrones-season-2-casts-brienne-tarth/68912]
