Build Fully Custom Armies In Dawn Of War III

It's still over a year away, but Relic is starting to reveal some concrete details about Dawn of War III.

It's been known for a while that THQ and Relic are working on Dawn of War III, though details have been pretty much non-existant since this fact surfaced back in 2010. That said, Relic has let slip the first big piece of information: Fully customizable armies will be a major component of gameplay.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Relic's marketing Manager James McDermott explained that Dawn of War II- Retribution paved the way for this decision:

"Looking at what we had real success with with Dawn of War II - Retribution, with the DLC, and with customisation and building their armies and collecting being a big part of what 40k fans really love, we want to make that a big part of DOW3.

"There's going to be lots of opportunities to expand and build your own custom mega army. That's definitely an area we want to invest in. We see a good opportunity."

Additionally, base-building will see a return in the next Dawn of War title, though McDermott promised that this will return to the series, too. "We brought some base building back with Retribution," he explained. "With DOW3, because it's going to be a new version, we're looking at the game as a whole, and we're really upping the intensity.

More information about Warhammer 40,000: Dawn fo War III will apparently be revealed next month at Gamecom in Germany next month. The game is reportedly due to come out sometime between late 2012 and early 2013.

That sounds interesting. Can't wait to hear more about this next month. Though, I wonder if we will get more armies in the next game since DOW II is still missing a few.

That sounds awesome. Can't wait for this game's release, love me some DoW.

I just hope they aren't too centred on the Space Marines with the army customization...again...

Relic made Impossible Creatures, right? Having customizable armies made that game one of my favourite RTS titles of all time. I'll have to check out Dawn of War III, even though I never played the first 2.

Impossible Creatures was one of the most delightful RTS games I played in a long time. I never got into the Homeworld games, though.

Dawn fo War III? Fo' rizzle?!

Anywho, customizable units are one of my favorite aspects of DoW II. I just hope there's larger scale combat and more of a focus on destroying your enemies instead of capturing strategic points this time. It just doesn't feel very much like Warhammer 40k when you win a victory, yet the enemy isn't completely annihilated.

Warhammer has got to be one of the best universes I've ever seen. I missed the boat on Dawn of war II so maybe I can get started actually playing in the universe with the next installment.

You kidding? Tons of people here like Tau. Hell, I'm one of them. Tau would be awesome, but Necrons would be scary awesome.

As an Orkz player, I hate Tau with a passion.

It figures. Aside from Tyranids, Orks are the Tau's natural enemy. Though I am surprised there's an Ork player here. Good on you, Orks are really under-appreciated.

Awesome. I enjoy customization far too much.

Also, we haven't had a story-driven, individual campaign about someone other than Space Marines since Winter Assault...I do hope this customization isn't just wasted on the multiplayer.

Words don't describe how stoked I am. I just hope they don't Matt Ward some of the customization for different armies

Well, at least I can count on Relic to consistently make games I like!

Like that time the Necrons teamed up with the Space Marines to fight off the Tyranids. Maybe we could see a Necron/Marine army.

God dammit Matt Ward, I often wonder how you still have a job.
