UPDATE Swiss Police Want The Darkness II Banned

An organization of Swiss policemen wants to ban The Darkness II, which allows the player to shoot cops.
Life is rough for Jackie Estacado, protagonist of The Darkness series. First, he gets possessed by an ancient spirit of unspeakable evil, and now he may be banned from Switzerland. An organization called The Swiss Christian Police Association (CPV) wishes to see the game barred from sale in its native country, due to the player's ability to shoot and kill cops in a fairly gruesome manner.
"When police in England are the target of mobs running amok, it is important that police are not portrayed as the enemy," said Felix Ceccato (president of the CPV) in The Local, an English-language Swiss newspaper. Ceccato and his fellow CPV members believe that violent depictions of police killings could incite violence against cops.
Gamesrights, a Swiss association that protects consumer rights, disagrees. "Unfortunately it is not new that certain scenes in video games are taken out of context and deliberately portrayed as the total goal of the game," remarked Thomas Riediker, Gamesrights co-founder. "Those against deliberately try to misinform, robbing games of their complexity and depth, portraying the most shocking and offensive view." Riediker plans to launch two big initiatives later this year to educate non-gamers about game content in a straightforward, level-headed way.
The CPV's view is understandable: Cops have a dangerous job, and very few people would intentionally want to promote violence against them. However, since The Darkness has a mobster protagonist, going up against the police seems like an unavoidable part of the narrative. For now, the game is still on track for release in Switzerland in early 2012.

UPDATE: 2k Games has offered the following statement: "Reported stories regarding police officers in The Darkness II were erroneous. To be clear, there are no police officers in the game."

Well, that would seem to settle that, now, wouldn't it?

The Swiss Christian Police Association
I'm surprised about people having problems with something so trivial, especially if it's about a video game. I'm not surprised seeing that it comes from Christians.

I suppose they're also fine with banning all movies, books, TV series, cave man paintings, and all the other videogames that depict authority figures (or perhaps they're only concerned about policemen?) in a negative light then? What about Police Academy, those don't portray policemen respectfully either do they?

Also what sort of sentences are the christian police association looking for? Will we be going for five decades in a labour camp or straight up execution?

The idea to educate non-gamers as to what games are really like is one of the best ideas I've heard in a long time. It's good to see that we're finding ways to help solve -some- of the irritating little problems we have.

Because we just know that someone killing a cop in a video game is immediately going to snap and run outside and start rioting and gruesomely murdering police, right?

Right?

Fuck these organizations are dumb.

I think the police shooting a guy and then lying about it sorta did that whole "Portraying them as the bad guys" thing for them quite nicely... maybe being able to shoot them back in a game will alleviate some of that anger?

Think about it cops, you release enough games about killing police and you can go out and shoot as many innocent people as your power-hungry-yet-cold hearts could crave.

OR if the Swiss Police think games really have that much influence why dont they release a game where you play as a police officer who doesnt shoot people in the face? Maybe get bonus point for telling the truth? Maybe unlock new... notebooks when you arrive at work on time and fill out paperwork efficiently.

Oh, that's good.

We no longer need the Swiss aid in the battle against chavs. Perhaps next time they can let England speak for themselves.

"The CPV's view is understandable"

Hardly. Its a piece of media. The whole attitude around various groups towards this sort of thing is getting ridiculous.

I don't understand why the CPV picks on this game specifically. There are so many games that allow you to murder, bat, knife, shoot-in-the-face and chainsaw police officers. Why the Darkness 2?

Also, there are no police officers in this game. These are not the droids you are looking for.

"Unfortunately it is not new that certain scenes in video games are taken out of context and deliberately portrayed as the total goal of the game," remarked Thomas Riediker, Gamesrights co-founder.
*cough* Mass Effect "porn" *cough*

Like other people, as soon as I saw "Christian", I knew the rest of the story.
Bloody hell, there are more murders and merciless killing of civilians and authority figures in the sodding Bible than in The Darkness II! And especially since 2K Games announced there won't be cops in the game...

Oh of course. Saints Row, GTA, Mafia, if not played right Crackdown, and about any other open world game its ok to do that. But whenever you summon a bunch of demons to rip a guys throat out that is not even possible its not ok. Like I'll go outside one day, have tentacles pop out of my back, summon a demon dressed in a 2K uniform and have them gouge that police officers eyes out. On days like these I am sad to be a christian.
