New Wing Commander Rumors Start to Swirl

It's beginning to look a little bit like a new Wing Commander game might be in the works.

It's been awhile since we last saw a G4 [http://www.amazon.com/Wing-Commander-Deluxe-pc/dp/B0009FUVSW/ref=sr_1_7?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1315509201&sr=1-7] that he really wants to do another Wing Commander game and has a "very specific vision for it."

"I think I could come back and push the boundaries of cinematic storytelling again. I'm looking at some of the stuff that's been done and it's sort of, in my eyes anyway, falling short, and it's not because of the technology. It's falling short because of how it's been done," he said. "I feel re-energized, and I think I can come back... and push forward parts of the industry in terms of narrative and cinematic storytelling."

Declarations of "I still got it" are a dime a dozen but as the Wing Commander Combat Information Center [http://www.wcnews.com/news/update/11280] discovered, back in April the Detroit News carried an article about tax breaks for movie and videogame projects in Michigan that quoted Chris Roberts of Bl!nk Media International as saying that he "wants to make a videogame that would take years to build and require full-time workers." The game in question, he said, would create 112 jobs and have a budget of just over $31 million.

Turns out, according to LinkedIn [http://www.linkedin.com/pub/chris-roberts/39/132/351], that the Bl!nk Chris Roberts and the Wing Commander Chris Roberts are one and the same. But what's really interesting is this: a chart included with the article listing various projects planned for or underway in the state includes a line describing a videogame with a $31 million budget, 112 planned hires and a list of "scheduled project actors" that includes Mark Hamill, Malcolm McDowell, Tom Wilson and John Rhys-Davies. BAM!

Why the bam? Highlander sequels [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114950/], it doesn't count.]

There's been absolutely zero said officially and as the CIC notes, it's possible that the Detroit News put together the list of actors on its own, based on the past Wing Commander games. But 15 years is a long way to reach back and many other entries on the list, several of which are named projects, indicate that casts have yet to be determined. Does it mean that a new Wing Commander is imminent? Definitely not. Does it mean that Wing Commander fans might want to start paying a little more attention to what Roberts is up to? That, I think, is a definite yes.

I know it's not fair to the games, but for some reason I have Wing Commander filed under "that space flight sim with the pornstar actress"...

I rather enjoyed the movie.

but then again, i saw it on tv later at night, so it did the purpose of free saturday night movie for me.

THough how popular a wing commander game would be today and how good it would be today as a comparison to what it was I have no idea. i cant honestly say it will be good, or we wont hear "generic" "space combat sim" or "just like every other" though.

That might because it did have a pornstar actress in it. She played the mechanic and a potential love interest in Wing Commander 3. There's so much more to the game. Well written characters, a great story and it was a top notch space combat simulator.

Wow that ame bring back memories althought I would assume Mark Hamill will no longer be the star of the game? I mean he quite old now well maybe a cameo. Still I do got to wonder if those live action scenes can still hold out in this modern day in gaming.

I have it the other way round. I saw her in Prophecy first. Imagine my shock when she showed up in my Gentleman's Relaxation Video! And I might add that she is rather not fussy with what she does.

If I knew about this earlier, I could have asked Malcolm Mcdowell. Met him recently, at a convention. He is an awesome guy.

I know, I own the game. The discs are scratched beyond repair, but I still have it. But for some reason, the slutty blonde mechanic remained the most prominent feature of that game for me... :p

As I was 14 when the first one came out and thought it was the best thing ever, I am not exited about this news. That they went to FMV with Mark Hamill, so Chris could indulge in his passion for 'directing' was the worst thing ever. They should go back to how the original was done. I used to love the animations (different each time) showing you scrambling for the mission and jumping into your fighter. Also the animation when you got back showing all the damage your fighter had and how close you came to 'buying it'.

When they got in real actors for scenes it was rubbish. Then there was Freelancer and Privateer (with Clive Owen hamming the place up).

This new one will be all consolized and rubbish hoping to cash in on the great name of the original. Yeah, another IP to be dragged through the mud. So yay, all the last good memories I have of this game are just about to get pee-d on.

Yeah, I know this is a rather negative post, but it's about the same reaction I have to whenever hollywood want to remake a classic from my child hood and 9 times out of 10 screw it up, which only serves to devalue the original. I think the same will be the case here as well.

Well she definitely was...interesting. ;)

Although the rest of her acting career is a real eye opener. :D

No, that's a fair assessment. It's also amazing news.

Biff is back! Wing Commander is one of the game series I regularly cite when I say there were things that older games do that we just don't anymore, not because of a lack of technical skill but because people are too afraid of mixing a hilariously bad movie with their awesome video game. Let me just reiterate Andy's earlier point: BAM.

I certainly hope they pull this off, if they do I'll buy two copys... one for use and one to sit away safely with my other duplicates untouched, like FF7, BG, Icewind Dale, Deux Ex, The Digg, Commander Keen and everything else....

Alistair.

Not gonna lie, really excited about this prospect. I was a little young and negligent at the time of these games, so I've played all of them but never got very far, I would absolutely consider giving the game a look when it came out. Also, I fairly excited about the possibility of multiplayer online battles. It'd be nice to co-op through the campaign with your friends and know you're fighting other people in game as opposed to AI. Also, might be one of the few cases where people are easier to beat than in game AI. As I recall, these games were very punishing.

Wing Commander 3 and Price of Freedom were some of the first PC games I ever owned. I would be over the moon to see a new one, and I would love it if they can get Malcom McDowell back in somehow.
