What does 'consolized' mean in terms of a series that existed on MS-DOS, needing a 486 processor and 8MB of RAM?
Only allowing a joypad to be used instead of a joystick is one prediction. Limiting controls to only that which can be fit on a joypad as well.
Something like this? http://cyborggaming.com/prod/v9stickps3.htm

Having 60+ buttons doesn't make something fun and it doesn't make it a simulation either.

This is a flight simulator: http://www.jetflighttraininginc.com/images/Flight-Simulator-Cockpit.jpg

And we're talking about a futuristic flight sim. Why the hell would there even be a stick?!

There is absolutely no reason why a new and better Wing Commander couldn't be made today on any platform out there, including the low end like PSP or Wii. The man wants to focus on a cinematic experience. No flight stick is going to help that. Just a good script and some story boarding.

And with the over exaggeration. Who wants 60 buttons.

Why a stick? Well, since it has been the controller used for these types of games since Elite that should give you the answer. Oh except for that oddity Roberts did that used a mouse called Freelancer which worked out so well. At least he had the decency not to make it a wing commander game.
I am happy if someone has a better control method for this type of game than a joystick as that would be progress. But a joypad is not it, in the same way it was not for FPS's. I see now way of doing this with Kinect etc...

If they forced people to play the latest Mario with a mouse and keyboard, I would understand when people complained.

Actually out of interest, did you ever play the originals? SNES version does not count as it was a rubbish port.

It's simple either it's a space flight game or not no matter what cinematic's are going to be present. If a space flight game there pre-requites to how it is played. Otherwise it is not a space flight game and if it is not, it should not be a Wing Commander game. Simple.

But I am sure this will turn out to be another FPS with a Wing Commander moniker.
