Funny thing, it was only a few weeks ago when I started to modify Fallout 3 with mods from the Fallout Nexus. I sorted the list by 'most popular' to get the best gameplay-enhancing mods available, and what did I find? A bunch of nude patches. Huh.
To me, mods like that are there simply for laughs. Sure, I could create a female character and watch her explode the heads of raiders butt-ass-naked, but I'd find that more funny than arousing. It's a hell of a lot easier just to download porn if I wanted arousing.

Loved the article, never really understood the facination myself. Probably becuase sex wasn't a taboo topic in my house growing up.

True, the nude patches can be hilarious. I downloaded a Laura Croft patch for Dungeon Siege once. It was a lingerie patch instead of a nude one, & my warrior had become a swimsuit clad bouncing E-Cup & I was thinking that it was like watching Baywatch if the beach had been invaded by monsters.
The even funnier part is the amount of nude patches made by & used by girls, when we keep putting the blame on men for being the pervs.
Now what about reverse-nude patches. Can I make the already naked rabbity thing Max wear a tuxido?

Seriously, though, I remember when various controversial games (like Mortal Kombat) drew playground rumors of all sorts of depraved and forbidden acts - like SWEARING! (I recall one article in Game Players or Gamepro saying "There's no nude cheat or swear cheat, but you can hack up babies due to a bug." I imagine there was much disappointment from the readers of that issue.)
Before that, the games Barbarian and Barbarian II (aka "Axe of Rage") for the C64 had nude hacks for assorted heroes and monsters. I wasn't really much for it. Somehow the idea of seeing Princess Mariana's assets didn't excite me when it also meant seeing the three-pixel penis of the 400 pound torture chamber guard. Especially when Mariana's real life analogue was Maria Whittaker, and if you can't see her breasts then you're just not trying.

It's great that someone decided to make an article about this. I personally never quite understood the thought process behind it. You wanna look at a nude version of a character? There are far easier and more fulfilling ways to do it. Hentai/adult fanart, or, if you don't mind using your imagination a bit, erotic fanfiction.

On the other hand, like I said earlier, I find it quite sad and am actually more repulsed than aroused at the sight of a nude mod (Alyx from HL2? that's just gross; the Ayane [from the DoA fighters] mod was better than that).
Except for this one Cammy mod in SF4. That was actually pretty good, probably because she wasn't actually naked. The one with Chun-Li not wearing anything under her cheongsam... not so much.

I found the nude patch for Morrowind gave the game more immersion, the followers of Dagoth Ur and the crazy beserkers on Solstheim were far more frightening. All completely stripping a corpse of all possessions felt quite degrading, I only reserved it for bitter enemies.
