Updated: Modern Warfare 2's Ridiculous Prestige Edition

Infinity Ward and Activision are setting a new standard for ridiculous collector's editions with the Prestige Edition of Modern Warfare 2: a giant set that includes a pair of fully-functional night vision goggles. Because that is totally necessary.

If you thought the Fallout 3 Survival Kit and Halo 3 Legendary Edition were the cream of the crop when it came to ridiculous premium packages for blockbuster videogames, you haven't seen (Call of Duty) Modern Warfare 2's Prestige Edition yet.

This package, recently revealed (and unboxed) by Infinity Ward community man Robert Bowling, is about as excessive as videogame consumerism comes. It contains the "Hardened Edition" of the game, packaged in a steel case and with an art book, and, believe it or not, what Bowling calls "fully functional" night-vision goggles, with alternating modes and a Soap MacTavish model head to stick them on for display. Prestige and Hardened editions come with download codes for Call of Duty: Classic on PSN and XBLA (it's the first CoD).

"This is where the big bucks are," Bowling declares. I don't doubt it. Bowling didn't mention how much this is all going to cost, but it can't be cheap for Activision and Infinity Ward (or, as Bowling calls his company, "I-Dub") to mass produce functional night-vision goggles, though I can't say I'm an authority on the subject.

Modern Warfare 2 will also come in a standalone Hardened Edition variety (with steel case, art book and download code), as well as the regular old, plain Jane, comes-in-a-plastic-case variety. For the people who just want to play the game and not sneak around campgrounds at night hunting raccoons.

UPDATE: According to I-Dub's Twitter [http://twitter.com/InfinityWard/status/2636041084], the suggested MSRP for the Prestige Edition is...$149.

Can't comment on their cost in specific. But I know from my Navy days that good night vision goggles runs a couple grand and the pair I used crossing the Panama Canal were only single mode.

I might actually get that... I'm not big on the whole 'collectors edition' thing, but I always wanted night vision goggles... Would make it a lot easier then using a flashlight when camping... Yeah I know it isn't traditional camping, but meh... Token would be kinda useless though... already have CoD1...

Oh, umm... what was in the Fallout 3 Survival Kit? Never actually heard of that...

It came with the Pip-Boy 3000 watch and a whole lot of other trinkets.

My boyfriend just orgasmed when he heard this...like, literally. Then he heard it was Modern Warfare 2 and he cried a bit.

I was not at all interested in this game until this. This is so ridiculously over the top that I want it. I can add it to my collections of games that I have special editions of that I never play. (Spore, Fallout 3, Resident Evil 5, Oblivion)

Looks pretty cool, though I suspect that the overall quality of those night-vision goggles is a little dubious.

Really, the only reason I'm interested is because, unfortunately, I want to re-enact the climax of Silence of the Lambs in my home.

Necessary? Boy, whenever something comes by that's included with Night Vision Goggles, it needn't be necessary!

Wow... That's a strange thing to put in a collector's edition. But then, what else would you put in there? Bullets? A 9mm? Night-vision goggles that come with a game... I can't my head around that. I might actually buy this... Although that depends entirely on how much they cost. And I think it'll probably be too much for me to spend money on.

Also, CoD1 coming to XLBA? I'm stunned at this limited edition package. It offers so many strange things that I'd never think would come with a new game.

I still have CoD for PC, and I used to love playing it. Maybe this'll revive the community a bit. So long as they don't put a hoop on the aim for the Kar98K.

If the goggles aren't a cheap piece of garbage (which I have a nagging feeling that they are), I'd buy the game, keep the goggles and give the mediocre game to someone else.

When I was a kid, I bought two pairs of "real" night-vision goggles. Both of them were just green goggles with flashlights attached to the sides. I was disappointed both times.

Maybe I should get this to fulfill my childhood dream of having real night-vision goggles.

Bad!

I think this is incredibly useless, but still incredibly cool, and unless it costs a few grand for the night vision goggles, which I think it might...
They will probably be akin to a 'My First Night Vision Goggles' set, and be utterly pathetic.
Otherwise people just won't be able to afford them

Still getting it though...

May think about taking out a loan... But I really wouldn't mind finding out how well they actually work. I know it's incredibly gimicky but it is something that could be useful (Or so I keep telling myself). As Obisean said, proffesional night vision goggles cost hundreds of dollars/pounds, so there has to be cutbacks somewhere if they are going to make this marketable.

Lets hope this doesn't cost too much, because that'll be freaking awesome!
