Modern Warfare 3 PC Goes Free for a Weekend

Never got around to checking out Modern Warfare 3? Play it on Steam for free this weekend.

When it comes to big-budget modern gaming, it doesn't get much bigger than Activision's Call of Duty series. Of course, not everybody is playing COD, which doesn't jibe with the publisher's eventual goal of world domination. If you're one of the people who hasn't played Modern Warfare 3, Activision and Steam are making the multiplayer free to play all this coming weekend.

The Modern Warfare 3 free weekend starts at 1 PM Eastern (10 AM Pacific, 6 PM UK) tomorrow, Thursday the 26th. If you're interested, you can begin preloading the game on Steam here [http://store.steampowered.com/news/7820/]. This will, as previously stated, only cover the multiplayer modes of the game - you're free to insert your own joke about campaign length here.

Even if it sometimes seems that everybody and their grandparents is playing the latest Black Warmissions or Modern Ponyfighter, there are plenty of people who don't. Maybe they're too busy playing Skyrim when it comes out, and then Mass Effect 3 right afterwards, and with Diablo III right around the corner - well, who can find the time?

If you have the time, though, you can give it a shot this weekend. And then perhaps pick up the full game for $59.99. Remember, the first hit is always free.

Sorry, console gamers. This is a PC-only affair. Better luck next time.

I think the point of this is that PC isn't their core demographic but maybe this is them trying to put out the olive branch? Oh well, I lit the branch on fire and threw it back.

If it weren't for the fact that it's a $60 olive branch 6 months after release, and a very shitty olive branch compared to what I can get for much cheaper/free, and the fact they don't care about us and just want us to take the branch itself, I might not have immediately said "Pass."

I tried the game last free weekend. My highlight was tossing a grenade by accident, going to the options menu to look at the controls again, and scoring a kill with the car the grenade blew up. Everything else was abysmal.

I already tried the free weekend MP some time back. Uninstalled it after 25 minutes.

Pretty much this, although my high-light had to be killing 12 rank 60 dudes in a single round using only the .44 pistol/knife combo that is available in one of the pre-made classes.

Aside from that.... the only thing the game did for me was make me want to buy BF3. Because I enjoyed the free beta for that so much more.

Eh, I'll give it a try, doubt it'll even run on my computer though. Of course, I'm not going to buy it, I might have, if it wasn't that what little spare cash I had went out the window because of a thief. Well, technically a rock went through the window >.<"

Hm. Always the chance that this might match my "MW2 Free Weekend" experience- 25 minutes of mildly entertaining action followed by hitting a bugged server, getting my prestige instantly maxed, and finding out the only way to fix it is to delete a profile and start over from scratch.

Think I'll pass.

Hmm, De Ja vu. I remember this happening a few weeks ago.

I really don't know if MW3 is worth $10 let alone $60. I mean it seem to live in cloud cucoo land where great free-to-play games like TF2, Tribes Ascend and so many other games are in competition.

Or how about jsut regular old Call of Duty 4? Which is close a damn to MW3 and much cheaper while beign far more PC friendly.

I will play the free weekend and I think that will sait my entire interest in the game, unless it goes to some free-to-play model, it is not worth it.

This game only stands a serious chance on PC if it goes Free-to-play or a VERY low starting price.

It could work, just have VERY slow levelling unless you pay to get normal XP rate and charge specific fees for short-cuts to specific upgrades like gold camo or a specific gun proficiency.

Seeing as this is the second free weekend that they've done for M3W, I'm guessing Activision is struggling to get it sold, particularly as there's a whole bunch of people from the first weekend that didn't pay up.

But that's not why I won't be playing; they've managed to time it with the same weekend as the Guild Wars 2 public beta.

So long as one copy sells in direct relation to the free weekend, the venture is profitable. Even if drop-in-the-bucket.

Shattered Horizon was the only free weekend I've ever played. Been meaning to buy that.

Captcha: Twenty Three. As in where COD is heading I guess.

So it's free for a weekand. Still, it is slow, has a shitty FoV and is overall just plain boring. I'll pass.

Back to TF2. It is faster, better and has hats.
There's also Tribes, but unfortunately not hats D:

More or less my reason, if I can manage to get in before the servers explod-amodicate.
