Blizzard Reinstates Diablo III Limits to Battle Bots

The off and on again limits aim to prevent exploitation without impacting normal players.

Blizzard has always had a strong stance against anyone trying to exploit game mechanics or bugs for gain in games like StarCraft or WoW. When real-world money is involved, as the auction house in Diablo III introduced last month, such security is paramount. That's why the company from Irvine placed restrictions on the number of games a player could make in a given timeframe. Unfortunately, legitimate players complained about the restrictions and Blizzard lifted them. Now, the number of game instances you can create in Diablo III will be limited once again, but hopefully the variables have been tweaked enough to ensure real players are not affected.

"We've further tuned and tested the conditions that trigger this limit to ensure, as much as possible, that it only affects those abusing the Diablo III game service in a way that violates the Terms of Use - for example, by using bots that create games in rapid succession," said Vaeflare, a community representative on Blizzard's official forums.

Vaeflare said Blizzard would continue to ban accounts with suspicious activity, but this limit would be an always-on security measure. "While we regularly take action against accounts for the use of unauthorized third-party programs and bots, this additional measure will help us further preserve and protect the integrity of the game and economy in between ban waves," he said.

Blizzard has struggled with making sure Diablo III stays as free of exploits as possible while not pissing off players. At one point, you always-connected-to-the-internet thing [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118037-Diablo-III-Patch-Restricts-Access-for-New-Players] is just another restriction on play meant to facilitate multiplayer, but also allow them to keep an eye on players.

The change to restrict multiple game creation in Diablo III is not yet live, but soon you will not be able to spam the opening of games every three seconds. Also, if your cat rolls on your keyboard while you nip off to grab a cup of tea, you may end up getting banned from accessing the Diablo III servers. If that happens, you can email Blizzard with a cute cat picture, and you may get off scot free.

Aw man, last time their restrictions almost made the game single player! Shame they're loosening up on things.

It's times like this I laugh at Blizzard. Glad I haven't, and never will, buy this game.

Torchlight 2 is looking so much better every day. Specially now that they've said they're changing the talent points so that when you put enough points into one it'll change and unlock another effect instead of just +crit or +damage.

Oh Blizz. I do love you, but seriously, just let it be offline. Stop being idiots.

Also, do you think we can have a thread which mentions Diablo without TL2 fans jerking off all over it? We get it, TL2 looks good. But it gets dull hearing you kids going on and on about it all the time.

Out of all the games I've bought in my entire life, D3 was my biggest regret.

But if they don't use constant peer pressure how else will they convince people that paying $20 for the novelty of having Diablo II with more contrast & resolutions is a good idea?

I'm genuinely curious about this: are the benefits of the auction house outweighing the cons of actually managing the damned thing for Blizzard? Because the problems do seem to be piling up...

Oh look, people making generic comments about how much they dislike Diablo 3 and not actually addressing the main idea of the story. I've never seen that... (in the last five seconds.)

This doesn't seem like to big of an issue. So long as they are reasonable with it, its shouldn't be an issue. People may want to rapidly create games in order to search for a specific thing in game but so long as the time it takes to get in and check is space enough to not hit the restriction it should be fine.

Only because TL2 is addressing all the problems fans have with Diablo 3.

I mean, Blizzard keeps screwing up Diablo 3 and TL2 keeps saying "we won't do that" and "we'll fix that" and "oh, yeah, our game has those qualities, but not that restriction". Fair or not, TL2 is looking to be just like Diablo 3... minus all the crap Diablo 3 keeps pulling.

You're a brave man to be saying that. Prepare to be attacked by ten thousand rabid TL2 fans.

I do wonder what would happen if TL2 failed to live up to the expectations of the fans. I guess that 50% would be in major denial and the other 50% will just kill themselves.

Thank you for posting a coherent and sensible response to what I said. Usually a comment like mine would resort in major raaaage.

I don't really see how this is that big of a deal. In WoW they have a limit on how many instances you can enter per hour, and the only time I've ever encountered the limit was when I would return to lower level dungeons to farm them for some item or another. I would expect that the system in D3 is similar and that legitimate players will rarely, if ever, encounter the lock out.

I never stop being amazed about how many major issues are created solely from a game being online/multiplayer only. The Elder Scrolls series never had any of these issues.

These things wouldn't even be an issue in a multi-player game if it were not for the real money scam. Cheating was never a problem for me in Diablo 1, despite have no protections against it. It's so simple, if someone cheats, don't play with them.

Ahem. Major RAAAAAGE!

No, but seriously. The main reason everybody is going on and on about Torchlight 2 is because it's in that magical phase between beta an release in which we can happily imagine the developers filling in the game with unicorns, sunshine, and a magical potion that brings dead puppies back to life. Once it comes out we'll all viciously bash it for minor flaws like one sword has a color of #B9C7FF instead of #B8C7FF or whatever. That's how this works.

Now maybe if they'd tell us when it's going to !@#$ing release so we can get our fix instead of suffering from major withdrawal symptoms we could shut up about it and just play the thing.

I guess it depends on the number of games limit/time between each game, but I have a sense this will be pissing me off next time I'm in the mood for some quick gold finding.

Truth. And the people bagging on this game yet still playing it are just masochists.

What's TL2? Lol, anyway, never played diablo, but bots were always an annoyance on RS.
