No Patch for 360 Silent Hill HD Collection

The 360 release of Silent Hill HD Collection will remain forever broken due to "technical issues and resources."

From a technical perspective, Silent Hill HD Collection is, by most accounts, [http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/silent-hill-hd-collection] a shambling disaster of a game. Built on unfinished code [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117485-Original-Bugs-Complicated-Silent-Hill-HD-Port], what was supposed to be a celebration of Konami's venerable horror franchise actually turned out to be a glitch-riddled mess. Last month, Konami got around to patching the PS3 version [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118419-Konami-Patches-Silent-Hill-HD-Collection], but there was no news of a patch for the 360 release. Now there is: There isn't going to be a patch for the 360 release.

"Plans for an Xbox 360 title update have been cancelled due to technical issues and resources," announced Konami. "Understanding the issues some users are experiencing, Konami issued a title update for Silent Hill HD Collection (PS3), which fixed frame rate issues as well as audio-synching and other reported issues. KONAMI apologizes to any players who are continuing to experience these issues on the Xbox 360 sku. Silent Hill HD Collection is available at retail stores nationwide."

It's unclear if the "resource" problem is tied to the production of the patch, or if it's a reference to the high costs involved with getting a title update onto Xbox Live. Recently, developer Phil Fish blamed Microsoft for his failure to fix a potentially game-breaking bug included in a patch for Fez, [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/firstperson/9817-Why-Phil-Fish-Ought-To-Patch-Fez] claiming that Microsoft wanted a "ton of money" to distribute a second update.

Regardless, if you're desperate to get your Silent Hill on in HD, it seems the mildly less broken PS3 version is the way to go.

Silent Hill is really the last franchise that needs to be in HD. The gritty, grainy, low res nature of it's graphics only adds to the atmosphere.

Stick with your original PS2 versions guys, there's absolutely no reason to buy this "collection" and there never has been.

EDIT: Also, I'm totally fed up with that "There was a HOLE here. It's gone now" picture being in EVERY Escapist news post about Silent Hill.

That's the irony. The holes in the game are still there.

I think the appropriate translation would be: "f*ck you 360 users, the game is broken, oh and please buy it, we like money."

I feel for the 360 users, Konami is so full of it. And MS for their stupid patching rules.

Did they just advertise their game in the same statement as mentioning massive techanical problems with the game that won't be fixed? O.0

I still don't understand this. I played the PS3 version of Silent Hill 3 and had no problems. Well, no game-breaking problems. A few times the dialogue did not even come close to matching the lips (there was a time when Heather was talking for a full three or four seconds before her lips started moving), running through one part in town with three split heads and two pendulums, the game slowed down, and Vincent's body disappears at the end. But game breaking? I came across nothing like that. It played just fine for me.
Haven't started Silent Hill 2, so is that where all the problems are?

WTF? Did they seriously apologize and then say that the game is sold everywhere? It sounds as if that last sentence is something they say after every silent hill discussion. Like Arnold in that one Christmas movie where he's talking to his wife and ends with "And remember, You're my number one customer".

Haven't experienced any problems at all after the latest patch. Whether the HD-remake was necessary or not is debatable - I, for one, am grateful for the new voiceover. It's not fantastic, but it's video game standard, and the biggest problem everybody has always had with the series since day 1 (including myself) was the spectacularly shitty dubbing.

It's actually kinda stunning how people defend it nowadays.

No need to comment on Microsoft's patch-policy.

This looks like a job for class action lawsuit guy.

Seriously though. They release a game that is a bug ridden mess then come out and say that there wont be any fixes for this game. They then have the fuckin balls to advertise the game in the next sentence as bein available everywhere?

Seriously. What. The. Flying. Fuck.

I really do hope someone sues there ass because this is friggin horrendous. You can not purposely sell people a buggy game that for some is literally unplayable and then expect them to just deal with it. That is so very illegal it hurts my brain that they think they'll get away with it.

so ms can charge you all money to play online, and charge developers/publishers out the arse just so they can patch or add any type of content, yea that is all fair and good.....sarcasm.

really, you guys should be pissed ms plays these games like they do not make enough money with console sales and all the charges and addons and crap they sell.

While I'm not going to get into the whole 'patch-cost' issue since that seems pretty obvious for it's stupidity, I'm going to agree with a few others and say the fact they basically gave every 360-owning buyer a middle finger by saying they basically aren't even going to try patching it for the people who did drop $40 on it and then going on to say that people should still buy it. It's not like we're talking about an indie-developer who would struggle to afford the cost, nor are we talking about a really niche XBLA game. We're talking about a full release of a game not getting fixes for game-breaking problems and the publishes publicly admiting they just don't care enough to work on and publish a patch.

I wonder what kind of abominations Konami execs would encounter if they were dropped into Silent Hill......

The main problem is konami is japanese company and Xbox consumers are not their top priority with low sales of hardware/software in their country. I'm not at all surprised by the lack for Xbox support from konami to fix a broken game.

While I understand where you're coming from, that's no excuse. They get the money from the game no matter what country it's sold in, and they were alright with releasing a broken game in the first place. Xbox support might not be their top priority, but it should be A priority. Instead they're just ignoring the problem entirely.

Now here comes the fun/speculation. Say that it's true that konami has to pay a huge fee to fix the source problem by re-submitting it Microsoft, then they don't see it as a decent finical move to make on their end. The second possibility could be that the code needed to patch the xbox version is much harder to do due the difference in hard-ware/software, Silent hill 2-3 where originally ps2 games so getting that code to work on ps3 is much easier to do, so doing a xbox 360 version would require a different programming code. This is just all speculation after all since we will never learn the truth of WHY, but yes this does suck and I feel sorry for xbros.

If I pay full price for a video game, I expect a fully functioning game. I did not pay full price for a partially functional game. I did not pay for a game that works part of the time.

Seriously, when a game that is 10 years old looks, sounds, and plays better than the "HD" port on current gen systems, the people in charge are screwing up, but its their customers they're screwing over.
