MS need to seriously loosen up their 'terms' when it comes to getting stuff onto their servers for download.

I don't remember specifics, so by all means take this as 'pulled outta my ass' but I'm sure I remember something like 400 specific things that need to be met before content is acceptable.

It's no wonder it costs to produce and then for MS to check it.

However, after that, seriously, how much is it costing MS to store some shit on a server, considering we're all already PAYING them for the Xbox Live service?

Patches for paid for games oughta be delivered free anyway, but you can't even supply them when we're paying you per month for 'gold'? (A hilarious term for the service, I know).

I'd say Konami entered a contract with their customers to ensure that a fully working game was delivered, and MS entered the same contract by allowing it onto the 360.

Konami need to make the patch and MS need to host it.

If you didn't make enough cash to support the patch, you should have made it a better game, or done some research into whether it would turn a profit.

As for Fez, it's an indie game, how big is this patch? 10mb? FFS MS, let it pass, you supposed champions of indie. Steam manages to automatically update games bought thru its service without claiming poverty, after all.

I think Konami and M$ are handling this one on the sligh. Since Nintendo patented 'video game insanity' back in 2001-2002 with Eternal Darkness, they can't say it's adding to the game to Fourth Wall mess with you. Instead, they're calling it 'unpatchable bugs and glitches'.

[sarcasm]
Smooth, Konami, real smooth.

Silent Hill is really the last franchise that needs to be in HD. The gritty, grainy, low res nature of it's graphics only adds to the atmosphere.

Stick with your original PS2 versions guys, there's absolutely no reason to buy this "collection" and there never has been.

EDIT: Also, I'm totally fed up with that "There was a HOLE here. It's gone now" picture being in EVERY Escapist news post about Silent Hill.
what about the xbox port of silent hill 2? Is that any good?
Actually yes that's what you should get however I don't know if it works on the 360

So regardless if Microsoft charge money to add updates to their system, Konami released a horribly broken game to retail. That they can't be bothered fixing that mistake and playing the 'victim' card to validate their neglect, only pushes me several steps away from consuming their products in future. But perhaps their recent history at E3 reveals a company in disarray. Yet, what damage would the release of faulty product do to help that?

Microsoft supposedly charging to host updates is reasonable, and should also be an incentive for developers to check their products more stringently. Bugs and glitches which affect users so universally that major fixes are needed, are NOT bugs and glitches which 'slip by'. They are a bean counter calculating the cost of releasing a month later and losing potential sales, or releasing on time, thus trapping consumers while they must wait for vital updates.

I'd like to know more about that 'controversy' though. It seems that nowadays, indie devs s**t stirring 'the machinations of the Man' is part and parcel in blog journalism and indie development. We get it, you guys are bucking trends, going places the big guys cannot dare to go. But you also complain an awful lot and occasionally sound like upset forum people.

That's just my 2 cents based on what I have seen. It's a broad generalisation, but I think that including Fez's complaints in this article is a false equivalency. Konami's complaints are a non-controversy. They knowingly released a broken product to retail. They were prepared to entrap consumers so that they must wait for repair, and now Konami cry foul on the costs of that repair. Fez's issue doesn't fit in this context.

Hm, I suppose I was really lucky with my recent playthrough of SH2 'cause I didn't have any major issues. I have yet to play SH3 though, so fingers crossed I didn't just jinx myself.

Still, not very impressed that they're simply... not going to release a patch for a game that needs one. This certainly isn't the first time in the past several months I've heard of this shit happening either.

Microsoft demands payment from publishers/developers in order to distribute patches?
Why is the X-box 360 so popular? It's like a machine that eats money.

Regardless of Microsoft's part in this (that can be debated for days), this is still a bullshit stance for a company to make. You can't fix one version of the game, then tell people who bought the other version that they are screwed. I would be a bit more understanding if they felt a need to not patch the game on any system. I'd still be irritated, but I'd accept it.

But this is just showing favoritism towards one system over the other, and strikes me as being rather unprofessional. It's not the fact that they aren't patching the 360 version in and of itself. It's the fact that they are refusing to patch the 360 version, after having already patched the PS3 version.

You think exclusive content is bad? How about exclusive patches?

Microsoft: "Oh our customers are having a bad time, ok, pay us a ton of money to fix your broken mess of a game for fans who demand a patch"

Sometimes I hate Microsoft...
Isn't that the same as what Sony did with Bayonetta?

Well congratulations. You have now guaranteed I will never buy it. I have always wanted to play Silent Hill 2 but was waiting for the 360 version to get a fix, and irritatingly you cannot buy it for the PC.

Well shit. I at least thought they'd try, but apparently not. Fuck it, I'll just stick to the originals. Even when the HD pack ran well I never liked the look of it. Oh, and they never did include THE FIRST FUCKING GAME!

Damn these people are stupid.

The controversy surrounding the Fez patch is that the developer (says they) cant afford to have Microsoft certify another patch for release, and certification is required for release. The patch was to address an issue that causes save files to go corrupt late in the game under certain circumstances. (I think)

Now talking about the Silent Hill HD collection, Fez is just an inde game, the HD collection is a full retail release no matter how old the games are. The cost scales as such and it seems that Konami has decided that its more trouble than its worth.

Meh, I bought the game for the PS3 on release and have only had slowdown issues. Nothing that would break the game.

I think the brokenness of the Silent Hill HD collection is exaggerated too much. And after playing the patched version I cannot find a single thing wrong with the games at all. They are beautifully well done in full HD and the atmospheric effects are nothing short of gorgeous. Plus Pyramid Head in high def.. I mean, come on.

Now as for the 360 version not getting the patch... well, the games aren't THAT big a mess without it so suck it up, pansies. Must feel really good to be the side that gets the shaft... you know, the same way PS3 has been getting it since well... forever?

Well here is another publisher that I am now going to buy used games only. I get that MS are asshats for charging for updates, but the idea is that it forces publishers to work harder to have functional games at release so things like this doesn't happen. It is all on Konami to make a game that works. Any one who would have play tested it should have said something or gotten shot. And if they said something, then the one responsible for releasing it anyway should be shot.

What I would like is some way to get my money back from Konami for the disaster of a "game" or at least get a PS3 copy of the game in exchange.

Konami... you've now joined EA and Capcom in the only buy used pile :(

We all know Konami is a staunch Japanese publisher so it's no surprise that they don't consider the Xbox 360 not worth patching, what with how well the 360 does in Japan and all.

MS needs to let up on their money-raking and let bug fixes be free, but at the same time I can see why they need to check *everything* to make sure an update/bugfix doesn't accidentily brick their console.

But the real blame needs to be tossed at Konami for literally just slapping the games together in a HD collection and calling it a day. Instead of pushing back a month or so to make sure it was completely fine they chose to release it anyway and fix the problems later on and then when later on came they said "ya know what, fuck the 360 version, kthnxbai".

If the cost for releasing a patch going to be cheaper than the fan outrage and backlash this apathy is going to bring about? I'm inclined to think it's reasons like this piracy is still so alive and well, this is just yet another smack in the face to consumer trust. How many people affected by this are going to think twice now?
