Full PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Cast Revealed

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will have 20 characters at launch. No Spyro. No Crash.

PlayStation Blog senior social media specialist, Sid Shuman, has revealed that the PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale launch roster will be limited to the 20 characters announced to date. That means no Snake, no Kat from Gravity Rush, no [insert your favorite character here], at least not when the game hits the shelves on November 20th. This doesn't mean the cast is capped at 20; It seems unlikely that Sony would pass up the opportunity to make some bank on roster DLC.

Unfortunately, Crash Bandicoot, doesn't seem to have made the cut. Developer SuperBot Entertainment has already ruled out adding the former PlayStation mascot as DLC, [http://www.dualshocknexus.com/2012/09/ps-all-stars-crash-bandicoot-cross-play.html] which means he most likely won't make it into the game.

The characters that have made the cut are listed below along with the games they feature in. Before you all start reaching for your red correction pens, if a character has had notably different incarnations, I've listed their most relevant appearance.

[ol]
Big Daddy (Bioshock)
Cole MacGrath (InFamous)
Evil Cole MacGrath (InFamous)
Colonel Radec (Killzone)
Dante (DMC: Devil May Cry)
Fat Princess (Fat Princess)
Heihachi Mishima (Tekken)
Jak and Daxter (À la recherche du temps perdu by Marcel Proust. Also, Jak and Daxter)
Kratos (God of War)
Nariko (Heavenly Sword)
Nathan Drake (Uncharted)
PaRappa the Rapper (PaRappa the Rapper)
Raiden (Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance)
Ratchet and Clank (Ratchet and Clank)
Sackboy (Little Big Planet)
Sir Daniel Fortesque (MediEvil)
Sly Cooper (Sly Cooper)
Spike (Ape Escape)
Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal)
Toro Inoue (Sony Japan's mascot. Originally featured in Doko Demo Issyo)
[/ol]

For comparison, the original Super Smash Bros. had just 12 playable characters. Brawl, the most recent installment in the series, clocks in at 35.

While I can forgive the absence of PS1 mainstays like Lara Croft, Raziel, Spyro, Cloud Strife, Klonoa, Abe, Aya Brea, Chris Redfield, etc - as Sony doesn't actually own any of those franchises - the lack of several characters from the company's first-party catalog is perplexing.

I smell post-launch DLC. And lots of it.

Eh. Maybe it won't be too bad to have new characters every couple weeks.

So the game will feel

1) very tightly balanced, or

2) incomplete.

I'm a little disappointed by the relatively small roster, but given my current addiction to Tekken Tag 2, I can't seem to give a shit.

Sadly, that's exactly what I was thinking when I read the number "20". Other things don't make sense either..like how is Bioshock a Sony thing? Do we really need Red and Blue Cole as separate characters, and not a changing mechanic for the one Cole character? Did anyone like Heavenly Sword all that much, and if they did would they be dying to play as Nariko in a game like this?

I was never really excited for this game, I was waiting to hear more information, but this character list is quite lacking and questionable to me.

I admit, I was hoping for a few more characters, but I mean there are several characters on this list I'll be more than happy to play as (Fat Princess, Big Daddy, Sack Boy, Spike, etc. etc.) so I don't feel too let down by it.

Maybe if the game is successful enough we can get a sequel with a larger roster in it.

Just out of curiosity though, I'm not super familiar with what Sony owns and what they don't, what would be some examples of first party Sony characters that would have been good in this?

I feel like they're really dropping the ball on this one, certain characters just seem made for a game like this, Crash and Croft for example would be fine examples. I think it's more annoying that most likely they'll come as DLC.

Well that's just...disappointing. Like I said before when the last bit of news about this came up, it doesn't scream "All Stars" at me. I still do love the fact that Nintendo had Snake in Brawl though, and the Playstation's version of SSB doesn't have him (at least as playable)

I don't really need or want this game but the siren like call of playing as Sir Daniel is slowly beating me down.
But they could have at least pulled Crash out for this.

The problem with this roster was always going to be that it's all over the place. Nintendo characters all have a similar aesthetic to a degree and feel like they could possibly all meet in the same universe, but these characters just seem like a really bad fanfiction.

Wow isn't that bullshit, Cole MacGrath twice, the Big Daddy (don't remember that being PS exclusive) Raiden (Not as good as Snake), and that chick from Heavenly Sword, a game people finished in an afternoon and didn't play ever again. The chance that more characters will be available via DLC is an insult as well. At least they have Ratchet and Clank in there.

Welp lets hedge some bets, whose gonna be the most OP tourny character? I'm betting on the Fat Princess, I mean they gotta make her more apealing than guys like Dante so of course they are gonna make her OP as shit.

I'm loving how everyone keeps conveniently forgetting that Crash and Spyro are owned by Activision and keep blaming Sony for not including them.
Alright then haters, YOU try getting Activision to agree to sharing an IP in a game they won't get any revenue-cuts from. Sony is developing and publishing this, getting all the profits, so Activision will have no interest whatsoever. As far as IP goes, they're worse than EA.

At people wondering why Cole is on twice: the two Cole's have radically different playstyles. They share a name and the similarities end there.

Final point: Yes, SSBB has more characters at 35, but come on, how many of those are palette-swaps? How many of those are actually worth playing as? (The token Jigglypuff comes to mind). Also, besides the Cole thing, each character in All-Stars is representing a whole different franchise, which reflects a good IP pool for a crossover fighter like this. SSBB on the other hand had multiple characters suckling some franchises. If I recall correctly, there were 3 Pokemon characters alone, more than a few Mario franchise characters, a few Zelda characters, etc. etc. A crossover mash-up fighter needs to mix it up more than that!

PS. What IP's were being referenced in the OP's last line?

So they don't have Crash and Spyro, two of the most recognisable characters from the PS1? And Raiden but no Snake? What the hell?

Doesn't matter though, you get a Big Daddy! -_-

So Parappa, Spike and Jak and Daxter are the only ones there I give a damn about. No Crash, Spyro or Abe but Big Daddy and TWO versions of Cole McGravellyvoice makes me sad. I probably won't bother with this after all. Poor show, Sony.

Two Coles? Why can't they just do a Zelda/Sheik transformation thing instead of having two characters taking up roster spots?

And Big Daddy? He doesn't really seem to fit, being a totally third party character, but then again, I suppose that was Sonic for SSBB as well.

Anyway, I don't have a PS3 so I'm just on the outside looking in, but like others have said, I find it hilarious that Sony doesn't even get its most famous mascot (imo), Snake, while Nintendo, one of its main competitors does.

Overall it seems to lack the "mascot" punch that SSB had going for it originally with almost all instantly recognizable main characters, As well as the fact that most Nintendo characters don't seem out of place together due to having similar "Nintendo" attributes like non-mature subject matter and colorful designs.

But maybe it'll completely make up for it in gameplay, who knows.
