Tron Teaser Hits Comic-Con

Something a lot like a teaser trailer for the upcoming Tron sequel has been shown at Comic-Con.

An HD version of the concept footage for Tron Legacy, the sequel to the cult 1982 movie, has been shown off at the San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. Jeff Bridges makes a return, as do light cycles and killer Frisbees.

It's a little difficult to figure out what is going on, but it almost doesn't matter, as the visual design is really good. If you want to download it for yourself, hit the viral site that's been set up here [http://www.flynnlives.com/media/video/0xendgame.aspx].

Would a premise like TRON's hold up today? It seems very dated to me, like hacker movie or comics when radiation gives you superpowers.

You sound like the same people who changed the ending in Watchmen because I guess aliens scaring the world together doesn't make sense either.

A good story is timeless. Remember, TRON had was a better movie than The Matrix and it had much the same plot. the new-old Star Trek movie was better than I expected and they wore the uniforms from the sixties. I can't wait for a worthy TRON sequel myself. Don't let being jaded keep you from enjoying a movie.
I'd point out that the new Watchmen ending actually tied things together extremely well; linking the fear of nuclear attack to an existing character's powers, and the existing fear and misunderstanding of him. Overall, it was much cleaner than the "suddenly, aliens" ending that made sense but didn't tie together so cleanly.

I'm liking the new "organic" light cycles with their analogue paths; it's distinctly TRON, but it's much more modern and sleek. This isn't some 80s Pastiche insofar as I can tell; it's the same premise (World inside a Computer) applied to modern tech and thought. However, where the former was before its time, I suspect this may seem a little dated. We'll see how it goes.

Sigh I'm going to have to watch it after seeing just how shockingly bad that trailer was.

*delves into minor fanboy mode*

Firstly it was set in cyber space and made up of computer system sprites (like banking programs etc) forced to fight each other in these deadly games.

Other thing that kinda ticked me off was the fact that the light cycles are totally redone and the concept ruined. They were stuck to a flat arena and could only move at 90 degree angles, not any which way they liked.

Which movies were you actually watching?

The matrix was NOTHING like TRON plot wise. TRON is purely a computer system attempting to take over all computer systems. The matrix was a computer system attempting to annihilate humanity.

Radiation giving super powers is actually a better starting point than most of the bullshit movies come away with these days. (like the matrix when it did the horrific explaination of neo's abilities in the matrix...then they gave him them outside of i and somehow his ability to ignore coding makes him god in reality...)

Hackers was a great movie, ahead of its time, but still a great movie. It could work really well if it was remade for today.

I was watching the movies I mentioned, chum. In TRON you had a talented computer whiz sucked out of the world he knew to an artifical electronic simulacrum and fight the evil program that wanted to replace humans as the dominant force on the planet. In The Matrix, you had a talented computer whiz sucked out of the world he knew to a hellish world that could only be saved by visiting an artificial simulacrum to fight an evil program that wanted to replace humans as the dominant force on the planet.

Same story, only the Earth is more war-torn and it took three movies to tell in the Matrix.
Actually the matrix is rather more complex than that.

Mainly he wasn't "sucked" he was drop kicked =P out of an electronic prison only to find out that he was actually beter off IN the prison but its run by electronic nazis and he has a sudden burning urge to inflict merciless brutal revenge upon them...until his bad ass electronic twin shows up and he pussies out and settles for peace.

So yeah. Pretty different.

If anything TRON is far more similar to the CGI Series Reboot, given its heavy reference to users and everything (except the protagonist) in the virtual world being programs fighting other programs.

Great line for a teaser. "It's just a game!" I think Disney has a chance for a comeback without Pixar.
Pixar is involved in this movie, or, at least I think they are.

...Mother of God.

It looks great in my opinion. I can understand why fans would hate the analogue light cycles and whatnot, on one hand it's not a case of 'will it hold up today' because the fans will lap it up regardless. However this is a sequel, not a remake, so I feel like it's fine for things to be changed up and new things to be introduced.

And at least they showed a bit more in this teaser, the last one was horrendous. And I see they dropped the Tr2n title.

I would disargee about TRON's story the thing that derw people into it. in my opinion, it was the speical effects (CGI was a vrey new technique at thime it was made) and that video games were a completely new medium. Gaming has change a huge amount scince it was released and CGI is considered to be overused.

This is excellent. No info, all spectacle, and it seems to be attempting to sticking to the premise of the original (at least from what I know of it.)

Whoever designed this teaser knew their stuff. I like the new take on the light-cycles too: very slick. Color me enthused.
