Call of Duty: Ghosts Will Feature Kinect Voice Commands

Tired of constantly being yelled at by your in-game sergeant? Now you can return the favor.

Voice commands are one aspect of modern gaming that is typically hit-or-miss, and it seems to miss more often than not. For whatever reason, current technology doesn't seem capable of interpreting human speech reliably - especially when the parsing of a voice command could mean the difference between life and death for your in-game avatar. The Xbox One, with its new and improved Kinect, could finally achieve reliable speech recognition, and Activision seems to believe it can. To that end, Activision boss Eric Hirshberg has confirmed that Call of Duty: Ghosts will feature Kinect voice commands - a series first.

"I made a passing comment that you're going to see voice integration, voice commands via Kinect," Hirshberg said in an interview, "which is something that we haven't done in the past with Call of Duty. We think the improvements to Kinect really excite us because of the level of responsiveness and detail. I thought that the demo they did with the voice commands on television, the instant changing between games and music, was really compelling. You'll see more of this coming from us as we get closer to launch."

Series veterans are likely groaning by this point, but Hirshberg is confident that it won't just be a gimmick to mention on the back of the box. According to him, the oft-heckled mantra of "Better with Kinect" will hold true in this case. "We've always made sure that we don't just use new technology for novelty's sake," he says. "We always make sure that it makes the gameplay better. In this case, we think it will."

Alright, so the new Call of Duty is going to have voice commands. But what commands should it have? We know that this entry will focus on a singular, persistent squad, so giving orders to your individual squadmates could reinforce the sense of teamwork that the developers are going for. Personally, I have but one request: if I can use the Kinect to tell my canine companion what a good dog he is, I'll get my wallet out right now.

I'm sure there will be a ton of commands for the dog. You can tell it to fetch! Sit! Heel! Urinate on that wall!

But for me its a stupid idea. Mind you I find CoD stupid to begin with, Metro is a far better shooter. Arma, and bunch of others too.

Battlefield is as crappy as CoD, an EA clone of CoD basically.

Be more impressive if the game took voice commands from your own dog.

Eh, I still don't get voice commands. IMO pressing a button is infinitely easier then having to shout at your kinect and hope it does what you want it to do.

I'm sorry, but when they focused on arm hair of all things, how has this not bothered others considering how lifeless and unrealistic the dog's model looks at times? It's at times got that "taxidermy look" that many of Oblivion's creatures had. I mean, you would really think that they also make sure the dog got the same treatment...

But Call of Duty already had voice commands! Remember Modern Warfare 2? "RAMIREZ! TAKE OUT THAT CHOPPER! RAMIREZ! KILL THEM! RAMIREZ! RAMIREZ! RAMIREZ!"

As long as the voice controls do more things than just reload or throw grenades. I tried the voice command with Halo Anniversary and aside from the scanning thing, and they were bollocks. Not only was there about twenty commands, they took a fair bit of time to do anything. It's still quicker to tap the reload button than to yell out 'Reload' and then wait for the game to process that.

I can't even begin to describe the amount of rage I'm suppressing right now.

Get out...now...

Edit: Not to mention this has literally nothing to do with the article. Were you just trying to provoke people? Sure seems like it. I'm dancing around a specific word, but you know what it is.

My favorite shooter has voice commands too! I tell my team mate to wait for Uber so we can kill that sentry nest and usually the Demoman will hold up and listen! I tell my team mates that the Pyro is a spy and usually the Soldiers and Pyros on my team wail on each other until one of them drops dead. I tell the Scout to stop using the god damn Teleporter and usually... well, usually that voice command doesn't work.

I guess using your voice to coordinate an effective team is an alien concept to your typical CoD player anyway. They're too busy screaming vitriol into the wire to ever consider such an option. Too bad decent voice commands will forever be relegated to single player. It might make the MP tolerable again.

I think that he meant that the more recent BF games have way more in common with COD than they used to. Especially BF3's SP.

OT: Would it be inappropriate if I said "He finally learnt how to play dead!" when the dog inevitably dies?

I've never played either CoD or Battlefield games but I did play Arma II. And I would say that a more intuitive system for issuing orders to your squadmates would be great. I mean, anything is better than going through stacks of commands to find the one that summons a gunship, for instance. So in that context Kinect might actually be a good idea. Screaming at the screen while anyone else is in the house would be bloody embarrassing, too, but Kinect users should have gotten used to it by now, I guess.

Still, what exactly does that have to do with the article? It's about Kinect availability for CoD, an Activision game. Which has jack all to do with Battlefield or EA. It's just bringing it up to start nonsense.

you know, if they implement it right i can totally see this voice command thing working for tactical team-based shooters, like rainbow six. you control your character with the controller and give orders to your team with your voice. that could be pretty cool, right?

Even if voice control does work for the dog, does it really matter?

I'm sure if won't even be in multiplayer, which is what at least 95% of the COD players care about.
