Dead Rising 3 Features Smartglass-exclusive Missions

If you want to experience Dead Rising 3 in its entirety, you're going to need to keep a tablet or smartphone handy while playing.

When Microsoft debuted Dead Rising 3 during the recent E3 conference, one of the big bullet points the company presented for the title was its Smartglass functionality. The idea of interacting with a videogame via tablet or smartphone is not new for Microsoft - it first demonstrated the technology at E3 2012, and you can currently find this functionality in a number of Xbox 360 applications - but with the Xbox One the firm hopes to really push the concept on consumers.

According to a new Siliconera interview with Dead Rising 3 executive producer Josh Bridge, that effort includes in-game missions that are only accessible if you're a Smartglass user.

Bridge was asked to explain how exactly Smartglass works in Dead Rising 3 and he was surprisingly candid in his response. "After you launch the [Smartglass] app, it notices that Dead Rising is currently being played, press a button, and in kicks your phone," Bridge states. "It actually skins your phone to be like the phone from the game's universe."

More intriguingly Bridge adds, "You'll get calls from a character that are only on the SmartGlass device. So if you don't have SmartGlass, you won't get those calls from that guy. Which also means you won't get those missions."

It's currently unknown how extensive this Smartglass exclusivity might be. Whether it's localized to that one character (and the missions that surround him/her) or if it's to be found all over the game. We're attempting to contact Capcom for further information, but in the mean time those of you with intense addictions to Capcom's open-world zombie franchise might want to start saving your pennies for a mobile device of some kind. Even if Dead Rising 3 didn't feature this sort of exclusivity, it appears certain that Microsoft is headed down this direction with the Xbox One. Welcome to the future of gaming, huh?

Why?

I get offering something a bit different by having a physical device to interact with as part of the game - nice bit of meta. But... ..why make it dependant on having such a device? Your just cutting people out of content.

Oh, dose Microsoft get to harvest people's data via smartglass? Cause that's the only reason I can figure for this push.

I don't think you could find an amount of many people caring about SmartGlass exclusive anything with the microscope used to look at atoms in the Large Hadron Collider.

It's so hilarious how hard they're pushing the whole "integration" thing. Windows 8 is a smartphone os and now you can only access parts of your game with a smartphone.

People will be so mad in the reviews for this games I bet

What is the problem exactly? This is bonus content for those interested. Completely able to be ignored if you aren't. Not seeing a down side here.

Buying a $400 tablet just to access maybe one or two extra missions is a downside.

Since it is not necessary for 90% of the game, and since I'm not a completionist (except for Mario), this does not bug me at all. I can see how this would bug all the Completionists though, to which I say "I'm sorry."

You really don't see a problem with exclusive content that people who have paid full price for the game and paid for a console which is $100 more expensive than it's competitor can't access unless they pay more for yet another device?

That would be true, if Smartglass weren't able to be used on any smart phone as well. You don't need to buy a tablet to access it.

If you have a smart cell phone, you can access Smartglass. It's designed to be accessible to anyone with those kinds of devices that most of us have already. And if you don't have one, it's not the meat of the game. It's a side order of green beans.

I know it's fun to beat up on Microsoft, but I don't see this as a problem. No different than DLC or buying a new character in LoL. It's extra for those who want it, nothing more. If you just wanna be mad about it, be my guest. But no, I don't see a down side.

Leave it to Microsoft to put content that should be free behind some sort of paywall.

capcha: Toy Soldier. I'm guessing that's going to be the next peripheral needed to play your games with Kinect.

Oh get fucked Capcom. Not all of us have smartphones.

I don't mind you having neat little features on Smartglass like it can be used as a map, but putting missions exclusive for the thing is just shitty.

Capcom has now stopped pretending and just started being a commercial company. Buy our games that contain exclusive missions for these products!

Yuk, so dumb. What next, missions exclusive to those who own a fridge of specific brand?

I'm kinda disgusted at the whole DR3 thing. They made it gray and shitty, Digital Foundry confirmed that it runs at about 15-25 FPS on xbone, and they made it exclusive right after expanding franchise to PC and Playstation with DR2 and off the record. And that's Capcom who always cry that they sell too few copies.
Granted, I'm not going to buy and Dead Rising games, so they can do whatever. Really puzzling choices here though.

I'm not sure if this is worse than day-one-DLC.
On the one hand; it's (probably going to be) free...
On the other hand; it's being held behind a pretty big pay-wall to begin with just by being exclusive to Smartglass.

I'm pretty sure only mutants can play with Smartglass.

...How many mutants with three hands own a Smartglass, again?

Not buying into SmartGlass. It's a cool app and all, but having to look away from the screen really detracts from being in the game. Some people might like it, but it's not for me. At least not through a first play-through.
