Gearbox Asks What You Want To See In A Homeworld HD Remake

The classic strategy game is getting an HD re-release and collectors edition.

Last year, during the evacuation of THQ, many IPs were hastily shoved into escape pods for safe keeping. While many were active franchises, others were relics from bygone eras. The pod containing the space strategy classic Homeworld was scooped up by the Gearbox Mothership (which I imagine looks like a large 'G'). Unlike THQ, Gearbox actually wants to do something with the property, but first, it'd like your opinions on how best to go about it with [a href=https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QZGG77X]an online survey[/a] asking about interest in an HD remake and possible collectors edition.

The survey gathers basic demographic information, but also has a fact sheet on a high-def re-release of the classic Homeworld games. It mentions higher-res textures and models, new post-processing effects, music from the original composer, and "animated cutscenes re-created in HD by the original artists". It also mentions integrating Steamworks features like matchmaking, achievements, and user-created mods, likely via Steam Workshop. Basically, imagine everything you'd want in a revamped Homeworld.

After that, Gearbox starts asking questions about a potential Collector's Edition. What would you like in a Homeworld HD Collector's Edition: ship models, fold-out map, an art book, concept art, or in-game goodies? I don't buy games in a box often anymore, but I might make an exception if it came with a pewter model of the Kushan Mothership.

I've never played Homeworld, but if you were to ask me what I'd want out of an HD remake of anything my answer would be less HD and more remake.

These are all good enough. A figure of a giant space bear holding Sajuuk in the collector's edition is what I'd want, and no fiddling with the mechanics.

Well...I want 3 things to happen with it:

1. Have nobody from Duke Nukem Forever or Colonial Marines within ten feet of the project

2. Don't do anything similar to what you did with Colonial Marines or Duke Nukem Forever. aka. Make sure it's actually playable and enjoyable.

3. Make it not utterly suck in every conceivable way.

There, you have what I want to see from the Homeworld HD remake Gearbox...have I mentioned I'm not even a fan of this series? Just airing it out so nobody else has to is all.

I said to myself before I even clicked on this section "Someone is going to bring up Colonial Marines" and I was right. People are never going to let that go are they?

OT: Well, I haven't played the series, so no idea. I'll probably buy it just to give it a shot, heard a lot of good things about it.

In one sentance? FIX THE GODDAMN MOVEMENT DISK!

It's easily the most infuriating to use, anti-user friendly mechanics in any game I came name to date, with only Cataclysm making it somewhat bearable.

Here's what you need to do for an HD remake:

1) Take the original games completely as they are.

2) Update polygons/graphics, and nothing else.

3) Profit.

If you're feeling adventurous, up the maximum unit caps for custom games or make much larger maps. Just don't fuck up a sure thing.

What I want from a Homeworld HD Remake?

Seeing it come from Relic with a stable developer that doesn't put their releases up against juggernauts thinking they will win. I'm still bitter about THQ's insane decision to make Space Marine compete with the king of 3rd person shooters, Gears of War.

I just want Relic to make good games and not be fucked over, and Homeworld is one of their finest titles.

I wouldn't mind if they took a page from Homeworld 2 and auto-harvested everything at the end of the mission.

/thread.

Pretty much this for any Remake. Shadow Warrior's remake has proved that you don't need to follow the original game's design to the letter in order to make a good game.

Homeworld is 15 years old. There will inherently be designs in the game that are outdated.

Other than an update to HD graphics, I'd like to see some changes into the auto-adjusting difficulty level. Particularly in Homeworld 2 it could get absolutely ridiculous: doing very well in one mission could make the next nigh-unbeatable.

Not much else beyond that springs to mind, really. For me, this is one of those games best left in its original form as much as possible. Hell, if they's just make the original games available on Steam I'd probably buy them immediately.

Oh, and that, yes.

more or less this, but i'd like to add two things:
first, make the auto-harvest at the end of mission standard in the campaigns.
second, something that is very important to me as it was great source of enjoyment, give us the no cap on captured units back, at least in the campaign, in the later missions of homeworld 1, i captured up to 75% of the enemy capital ships, which gave me a great feeling of turning the enemies weapons against them.
the first time i discovered you could not do that in homeworld 2 allmost made me stop playing since it seemed completly nonsensical to me and greatly dimineshed the fun i had with the game. however, i understand that the same feature could completly break multiplayer, so it should be disabled as it were in cataclysm and homeworld 2.

God I hope they don't cock this up . HW was my favorite game back when it came out originally. Even these days the graphics don't look that bad, it's mostly the interface that suffers I think. It's been a year or so since I last played.

I don't suppose I'm allowed to ask for a new game in the series with some good writers on board?

Should we ever let that go? I'm sorry, but with both Duke Nukem Wasn't-worth-the-wait and... well, this:

I just don't trust Gearbox anymore. I'd rather they just re-release Homeworld with some updated graphics (if they can even be trusted not to screw that up) and leave the rest of the game alone.

Well two games within a relatively short timespan that both had dubious things related to them and fro mthe same company, should we let it go? I know fans of Gearbox forgave them due to Borderlands 2, but as a fan of Aliens that was one click away from A:CM I'd like them to stay the fuck away from Homeworld.
