Cancelling the Apocalypse - Pacific Rim 2 Is No More - Update

The Hollywood Reporter is saying production on Pacific Rim 2 has been halted indefinitely, as the relationship between Legendary and Warner Bros. breaks down.

Update: Guillermo del Toro responds to news of his film's demise: "We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks. As far as I'm concerned, it's not gone. We're still on it." Despite the critical and relative financial success of the Mexican director's Pacific Rim [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/7705-Pacific-Rim], production on the sequel to 2013's kaiju smash-em-up has been halted indefinitely, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Originally slated to release in the summer of 2017 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/141709-Pacific-Rim-2-Gets-Title-Shooting-Date], Pacific Rim 2: Maelstrom has been put on hiatus thanks to dissolving relations between Legendary and Warner Bros. Legendary Pictures was keen to continue developing the film since its predecessor did so well in China, where Legendary is heavily invested; Warner has since backed out, though, supposedly due to the sequel's big budget versus its foreseeable low pay-off.

Del Toro, at least, has other projects in the pipeline. His Crimson Peak [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/moviesandtv/14456-Fall-Film-Preview-25-Movies-to-See-This-Autumn#&gid=gallery_4537&pid=1] comes out later this year, and rumors of a Hellboy 3 have been swirling for ages.

I don't know about you guys, but this is pretty disappointing news for me. Pacific Rim was easily one of my favorite films that year, and del Toro is a reliably spectacular director. Did such a solid movie really need a sequel [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/135923-Guillermo-del-Toro-Pacific-Rim-2-Very-Different-From-the-First], though?

Meh. The first film was like 10 minutes of cool action surrounded by 80 minutes of cliche characters exchanging goofy dialogue.

Plus they killed off the interesting robots in favour of the boring ones. Weird.

If this means he can make another Hellboy movie instead then I ain't complaining.

To be honest, I reacted to this news with a resounding meh. I never thought that much of Pacific Rim when I saw it, because it was like watching the "Made for Cable" version of a ton of much better anime I could have been watching instead.

Truth be told... I did not care.

The original was, in my informed but subjective opinion... BAD. Both as a movie, as an action... and even as a "giant robot" story.

The again I am one of those assholes that think giant robots are stupid by default...

*How much I would have preferred a more... authentic one, with more action and actually showing the might of the planet's war machines instead of relying on inferior giant robots...

You mean something like Battle: LA or battleship? I haven't seen much of the first one, but i heard it was almost as bad as battleship. I guess war of the worlds or skyline also show bits of that, but they give a more...realistic or authentic portrayal of how we'd fare against a civilization that has both the means and the will to invade us: very very poorly. Point is, we have a couple of those movies and they are generally not very good in any way. In contrast, pacific rim is probably the only giant robot movie of it's scale...ever. I can't think of anything close to it.

Personally, i thought pacific rim was a fun movie that did it's job (show giant things mashing each other) pretty well while not having a horrible plot to go along with it. It could've fleshed out the story a lot better, and i was kind of anxious to see how both the action and the story would be improved on after laying down the foundation in the first one. Del Toro does not strike me as the kind of director to make a similar sequel, rather one to use the neccessary stuff he did in the first one to go deeper and smarter in the second one.

Or maybe it would've been a mostly forgettable movie, highly similar to the first one. If the action and the CGI (quite intertwined) were as good as the first one, i would've still liked it. The fact that most of the action was relatively slow and methodical made it all the cooler for me, usually CGI is used to speed things up and make them confusing.

Well the world is in turmoil and with the introduction of kaiju bioweapons being researched it could make for an interesting human-driven conflict. Then there's the fact that they didn't really fix the problem long-term. The invaders are like locusts, going from place to place harvesting resources. Its unlikely one nuke wiped them out so they still need more resources. They opened up a rift to Earth once and they could do it again, and with the introduction of a kaiju that could use an emp and a few other things its implied that the invaders are using the kaiju they send to probe the technology, tactics and behavior of humans, meaning if they did it again they'd do it differently. Bruised, despoiled and in ruins, but not beaten.

Maybe, but I'd call it poor tactics over a bruised ego over anything. There's nothing special about Earth, they could go somewhere that doesn't set you up the bomb.

I was so hyped for Pacific Rim 2, there was nothing to be hyped off of but I don't care!
I loved, loved, the first movie and I'm hopin' for a seriously huge rabbit to be pulled out of a seriously huge hat, pun intended, if you want.
I was lookin' forward to the two Godzilla movies coming out in 2016 and 2018 with Pacific Rim bridgin' the gap but NOPE!
And it was gonna be called "Maelstrom"?! That name is awesome.

I have a bad feeling, and I'm probably wrong about this, that he's got, like, popcorn brain, "I wanna do this, no, I wanna do this, no, I wanna, no..."
Except instead of trying to decide what to watch on Netflix, he's driving a bunch of us crazy with "I wanna do Justice League Dark, no, Pacific Rim 2, no..."

While I am sad about the news (it was a good solid mindless action whihc did alot better than Transformers ever did) but I can at least take solace that the film ending did not lead up to a possible sequel. I hate it when a film does that only for it to never have a sequel (well except for the Mario Bro movie).
