OK so i might have missed something but when did 2D games become so fucking popular again...I know they can be fun for a bit and at times but why do they keep coming out with 2D instead of putting the time and either making it a 3D game or making completely unrelated game that will be fun for more then an hour? I thought gaming had evolved passed the 2D games but i guess i could be wrong

I play alot of 2D games. Reason is simple, they are fun. Just because a game is 2D/3D doesn't determine the playability. If a game is fun I don't think graphics really matter. If a game is lacking, sometimes it needs pulled forward by graphics/engine/etc.

2D is easier to do than 3D in most ways. So a few indie devs made some 2D games, and the world flipped its shit. Now a lot of 2D games are being made.

Pretty much this. Even Epic got on the bandwagon with ShadowComplex. Fun, slightly 3D, but retro 2D at heart.

I don't really care for most 2D games. Puzzle, tower defense, and Android/iOS games are the only ones that should be 2D, unless they are really good.

Look at it this way - 2d had to be the standard in the past because 3d wasn't really possible; computers and consoles eventually got powerful enough for 3d games, and suddenly everything HAD to be 3d. That became the norm for a while, but now we're in the stage where we're discovering precisely what works best in 2d and what works best in 3d. For example; fighting games seem to be drifting back to 2d (Smash Bros, Street fighter 4, blazblue), games like metroid which have been both are trying to discover where either is appropriate. Give it a while, and balance will be struck.

How very zen.

Agreed. The whole extra D jump is a serious investment (and no there is no such thing as 2.5D and anyone who suggests there is should be shot in the face) that doesn't necessarily add anything to the game. Plants Vs. Zombies (not knocking it, I love that game) would not suddenly be super amazing if it was in full 3D.

.....DUDE, Castlevania and Megaman are still 2D titles that continuously launch with the occasional 3D game. How could you have missed it at all, what are you, the slow guy who only knows game announcements when you see the first commercial for them?
oh fuck off, i just dont get why everyone loves 2D so much...its like taking a big step back

It not much of a step backwards. Platformers and the like are fun, and provide tons of replayibility. They are also a lot easier to make which is why we are seeing a lot more quality titles coming from the indie market and all that. And sometimes its just a lot more fun to play some platformer with a friend for a good few hours than to randomly shoot some 12 year old online.

Do you only watch movies in 3D now? No, of course not. I certainly hope we don't always have to toss the stupid glasses on to watch movies. You're looking at 2D like retro gaming but it's really not. 2D games haven't been lost in some archive and just recently dug up, they've been there, taking up less advertising space than big 3D blockbuster titles.

EDIT: And also...

Well there's your issue. You don't care for that type of game so you don't look at that type of game. If I only loved FPS I'd wonder why third-person RPG was still around.

Why not ask "Why do people play minesweeper when we have bejeweled?"

Does it matter? If you are that upset over the way some games are made, you have some serious problems. If you want an awesome 3D game why don't you make it yourself.

Also explain to me why people think platformers can't be 2D o_O. That's stupid considering the glitches that are made when making it 3D. I mean VVVVVV is a damn ton of fun.

I've never played a 3D shooting game which was more fun than the 2D Super Probotector (aka Contra) or Gunstar Heroes.

Adding a 3rd dimension for the sake of it was why a lot of the early N64 and PSOne games were absolutely dire. Super Mario 64 being the big exception, because it was actually well thought-out and developed, rather than just taking a 2D concept and adding the 3rd dimension as a selling point (I'm looking at you, next-gen Sonic games!)

Some games just suit 2D better. Look at Sonic (again) for an example. The new one coming out will trounce all the other versions made since the Megadrive days simply because it's going back to what Sonic should be - a madcap, helter-skelter dash at top speed along a 2D envionment. Making Sonic 3D meant you had to either sacrifice the speed (his main character point) or make it ridiculously difficult.

So judge each game on it's own merits, not the number of dimensions therein. :)

Because most of us grew up in the 90's when games were 2d and had simple objectives like run from left to right to beat the stage. Now there are complex games and shit like that, but some people prefer the old days. Not everyone mind you, and there are still some modern games that are awesome that have 2d, Mana Khemia is one that comes quickly to mind. In short, 2d is for some just like FPSs are for some, it's a matter of opinion, don't flip out just because all your friends want to play 2d games.
well apparently we differ in what we want in games and also our definition of freaking out...

You are apparently very upset with this topic. Why not just stop replying to it? It seems to just anger you that we may like 2D games.

What do you mean by 'everyone loves 2D'. That sounds a tad dramatic. A lot of XBLA games like Megaman 9 & 10 and Limbo are in 2D and they're fantastic games but I'm fairly sure, last time I checked, devs are still making normal games in 3D, or did I miss something?

Quite a lot of 3D games don't have much more options than those, if you're being honest. Tomb Raider, for example - one of the more popular 3D franchises - bascially boiled down to forward, back, left, right, jump, duck, shoot.

As I said above, some games suit it far better than others. Live and let live, y'know? I'd say there are still substantially higher numbers of 3D games coming out than 2D games, and most of the 2D games being released are almost-indie titles like Limbo.

Some games work better 2D. If the Scott Pilgrim game, for a fanboyish example, had been 3D, I can just tell that people running in from off camera and clobbering you in the back of the head would get really, really annoying.

I'm not saying 3D games are bad, I'm just saying that 2D games can work better, given the game.

well I didnt literally mean "everyone" just an easier way to say alot of people, and i meant it seems to me like they are just an excuse for a game company to put something out to fill time, but i find it incredibly odd to go back to basics to create a game. Most of them are only an hour or 2 gameplay, if that. And the replay value of it is slim to none because you are going to be doing the same thing over and over with no differ in the gameplay
