I'm really disgusted by this. Not by the story itself, that is quite tragic. I'm disgusted by the people commenting. Saying "It's war" and "They're soldiers they deserve it" is probably some of the most disrespectful thing you can say. When someone you know dies don't come crying to us.

Can't speak for everyone but I've never done that, and I don't intend to. That would actually be a weird thing to do IMO. And then I mean the whole "When someone you know dies don't come crying to us.", because I did indeed disrespect the US soldiers, why should I feel sorry for them? I didn't ask them to fight.

At the risk of sounding incredibly insensitive Oslo was worse. Not only were there more, they were all innocents. Military combatants losing lives in a known combat zone due to the actions of enemy forces is less of a tragedy more of an occupational hazard.
Premature death is always a sad thing, but this isn't exactly shocking, surprising, or even really news.

It's not a competition, a death is a death no matter the number of how innocent they are.

OT: I'm not going to mourn the death of people who are being paid to kill people. Especially when people are saying 30 people is a huge amount. It's pretty significant, but in war, it is pretty small, especially considering civilian casualties.
However, one civilian did die, so I offer my feelings on that casualty: =(

Actually if 30 people killed themselves at the same time that would be interesting news, people who went to war by their own will and dies don't interest me one bit. The only thing sad about it is that the US troops seem to believe they are the star in their own personal war movie.

Well for the US military incidents this large haven't happened regularly since Vietnam.

Oh no? I'm willing to bet to you that people will buy the newspaper that says "30 US troops died in Taliban attack" any day over one that says "The political effects of the Chinese market", why? That's booring. Death and destruction catches the attention of the people, while booring political news don't entertain people.

Right. 30 dead. Because that's so much more important than the fact that over 1500 Iraqi citizens, completely innocent, have been killed, often with just as many people as this being gunned down. I would love to know where you picked up this little fact from. Admittedly I'm from Finland and not the US, but I've spoken to many a US, British and Finnish soldier stationed (formerly, in some cases) in Afghanistan and none of them have talked like they think it's war movie. So either you're quoting someone else's insult to soldiers in order to seem clever, or you're just a bit ignorant to the reality of the situation. Either way, think before you write eh? Stuff like that just makes you look like an ass.

More on-topic: It's a war-zone and people will die - and people do die, daily. As a Corporal myself, I'm never happy when I read about troops get killed like this but it's what they risk when they sign up. No one forced them to go.

Can I feel sympathy for their families losing somebody? Absolutely.

Is it a tragedy? Doubtfully. It would be a tragedy when 30 people with no involvement, or wish of involvement in any war would be killed. These are people who by volunteering gambled their lives - and they just lost their gamble.

It's never a good thing when somebody dies, but in this case you're probably more respectful by realising that they knew all along this could happen.

I've never been convinced that those Chinooks are safe, I live near a barracks and see the things flying round on an almost daily basis, plus occasional Apaches. The Chinooks looks like pretty big targets to me.

This. Soldiers don't sign up to die, and they have a hard enough job as it is. To knowingly go to a country where you will be shot at, and might not make it back, that takes strength.

All death is a terrible waste. The profession of the person who died does not affect this.

That's the unfortunate reality. This kind of thing can and will happen. Might have just been pure chance, when you're in a warzone like Afghanistan, any attack can happen at any time. All this talk about our technological superiority... bullets still kill people, right? Explosions still destroy helicopters, right?

It's a sad day for our military, but such is the price that is paid for war. At the very least, those men will rest the easiest.
