Right. My 360 RRODed yesterday, after one year. I'm actually kind of proud of it, since it's a first-generation 360, the ones that supposedly die within three seconds (mine's a fighter, hah!).

But anyway, I sent an email over to Microsoft, and they sent me my shipping tag, blah blah blah. I took my console to the post office today, and sent it away. I come home, and check my email, and I see a nice little email from Microsoft (one that I should have recieved several hours before). I learn that I wasn't supposed to send my hardrive along with the 360, as it is an accessory and accesories cannot be returned. I'm not too miffed, as it was only a anorexic 20GB one, but I'm a little worried about my game data.

So, my question: If Microsoft takes away my hardrive or replaces my 360 completely, will there be some way to regain my game data/gamertag from online? I won't be too mad with losing my old game data (I was considering trading in all my old games anyway) but I'd rather like to keep my gamertag. It's Ego Own Vos, and I think it's a very nice tag. Thank you in advance.

Ya, there is a space when you go to sign in called "Recover gamertag from the internet" or something along those lines. Takes about three minutes, and you can re-download anything you had prior to sending it in.

M$ is currently running a few deals even.

This one really isn't a deal, but it is the price.

Also I heard if you are crafty-ish, you can just use a laptop hard drive and get it re-formatted, or something along those lines.

I'm about as crafty as a dead tuna fish, so I won't be doing that. But thank you, I'll look into those links.

All you need to do is recover your gamertag (it is an option from the dashboard) and you will have all your achievements and whatnot back. You might be SOL on the rest of the stuff on your hdd though if they don't send you the same one back.

Honestly by crafty, I just mean there's a way to do it. Probably really simple, and no problem. Although, I do have to ask did you not get the insert that comes with the box? Told me not to send anything extra in.

Right right, that's good. It's all I really care about, really.

You can recover your gamertag but I don't believe you can get your data back, shame about that though.

Good luck with 360 #2.

Wont Microsoft just send it back with it. I suppose it depends on repair or replacement. Good luck though. The gamertag should be attached to your account. Hopefully it'll be there for you to sign on to, I don't know though.

No, any DLC you had will be completely regenerated, you simply have to go find it, and click the re-download tab.

You can get your gamertag and downloaded content and licenses back, but your save files are gone.

I've heard that the new Xbox 360s are much better, with the new hardware and all.

Gamertag, yes. Game saves, doubt it.

I have recently been on the phone to microsoft myself about the fact that whenever you take my HDD off it dosn't want to go on again since the male connecter on the HDD moves around. When I finally reduced them to send me a replacement I asked about my data and they said that they couldn't put my data from my current HDD to my replacement HDD. I gave up on the idea since it would mean I lose my HDD (Meaning i can't play my xbox) for the whole christmas period.

Going back to the topic and stopping my whining you will be able to recover your gamer tag (If you had live) but i think the only way you'll be able to get your game saves back is if they sent you the same HDD back or they are nice enough to transfer your data to a new HDD (Although the likely hood of that is nil to 1)

Yup gamertag with all your friends, achievements and license for stuff you've paid for on the marketplace is easily retrieved over the net. Not possible with game data though, but uou may get your HD back if your ask them.

I don't think you actually NEED your game saves if you are really done with your game. Unless you are going to play those games again, you can get rid of them. Your account should save your gamer score with all the achievements you've done.

I've deleted a lot of my old save data from older games no longer with me and it kept the achievements and score on my account.

I dunno if any of that helps...but you are in for one hellish wait to get a new 360. I didn't get a new one for about a month and it was absolute hell.

They sent me a new xbox when I sent mine in its cardboard coffin. It does run better than the one I had. I believe it is quieter than my old one, I no longer get disk read errors, and overall it doesn't get as hot.

There is a trick you can do that helps the 360 get the best ventilation. Put your 360 vertical but upside down. Your 360 should be sitting HDD down and the bottom up.

You can redownload all the downloadable content you had on the old hard drive at no charge; Xbox Live Marketplace keeps track of purchases so it'll recognise you've already paid for any content you've bought. You would have to use it while connected to Live, though, until you ran a script on xbox.com [http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/licensemigration/] to fully transfer the licenses to your new hardware. (I'm told that will only work once per year, so don't do it for laughs.)

Friends lists and Achievements would be fine. Gamesaves and purely local stuff like music libraries would be gone, though.

You could back up the data yourself, right? It's basically a standard laptop HDD, right?
