Heavy Rain Is "Not Porn"

The designer of Heavy Rain [http://www.amazon.com/Heavy-Rain-Playstation-3/dp/B002CZ38KA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279054514&sr=1-1] said that the sex scenes in his game were about "love," whatever that is.

Heavy Rain, due out in N.A. on Feb 23rd on the PS3, is an ambitious project that blurs the line between games and cinema [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96957-Heavy-Rain-Is-Not-a-Game]. David Cage, Founder and CEO of French Game developer Quantic Dream, told CVG that Heavy Rain is definitely a game, but it's trying to tell a more nuanced story than the rest of the industry. And while there is mature themes and sexuality in Rain, Cage stresses that it's not gratuitous.

How does Rain differ from the rest of the pack? "You don't have a gun, you don't jump, you don't drive cars, you don't solve puzzles," Cage said. "You make decisions, and those decisions have consequences on the way the story is told."

Cage is also after the ever-elusive emotional connection in games. "In most games you've got adrenaline, stress, tension, frustration, competition: very simple emotions," he said. "With Heavy Rain we try to make you feel an empathy, make you smile, and make you cry. We try to make you feel what the characters feel, even if it's discomfort."

He realizes that his approach to gaming is quite different from the rest of the industry. "It's always a big shock for me when we go on show floors at E3 or GamesCom and look at the games this industry is producing. We feel like aliens. Our approach is different."

Sensuality is difficult thing to portray in games, but, according to Cage, Heavy Rain attempts to show characters making love. "It's definitely not porn," he said. "We don't intend to push the boundaries and be ultra-realistic in every detail. It's about real characters having emotions and doing what adults do when they fall in love."

Which is what, exactly? I'm confused. What?

Im kind of intrested to see how that will be implemented...In Farenheit (Indigo Prophecy to you in the US), they tried doing 'Love' and it just seemed like an impromptu reason to do a scene similar to that of Mass Effect...

Im all down for the idea of 'Love' been involved, how exactly it is implemented though is what intrests me the most

So, are they targeting our feelings of love, or erotica?

If the second one, then it's porn, and the designer failed.

When is this game supposed to be coming out again (feb 23rd? that's nearer than I expected)?

They seem to be doing lots of talking about it but not much showing it to us, which is more than a little disconcerting. It certainly doesn't hold back the fear they're just making Fahrenheit with extra boobs. Eh, maybe it'll turn out great, who knows.

I've been sold on this game since I heard about it in Game Informer in '08 (That's when I got a subscription). Now when is it going to come out!?

[small]I'll beat you to a post one of these days Furburt[/small]

Honestly though, this game does look epic

And gratuitous. It was like "Hey, I'm Carla" "Hey, I'm Lucas" "ZOMG, I love you!"

Regardless of how they do this "Love", it will be called pornography by the media and used in direct attacks at the gaming community.

Of course it would be funny if it went the way of Mass Effect, with the biggest attacker admitting that they were wrong after actually observing it, having only heard about it from a friend originally.

Emotional connections between games and players can be very hard to achieve. Apparentely a prime example would be Aeris' death in FF7 (I haven't gotten that far yet, so I don't know for sure). Since the player may have become attached to the characters in the game, it would come as a bit of a shock for one to suddenly die by getting an oversized sword through the back.

But I have yet to have that kind of a connection with any game I've played. Also forgive me for sounding a bit like a numpty here, but what is Heavy Rain actually about? So far the only things I've heard about it are the title, getting repeatedly pushed back, and an abundace of quicktime events.

Well, Greg, when a boy and a girl love each other very much, and when they've had a few swigs directly from the bottle of Wild Turkey, and when the girl's not quite thinking straight and the boy promises he'll pull out, no really I mean it, then the boy says

"Sup dawg, so I herd u didnt liek making babby but I accidentally in your base",

then nine months later a little bundle of joy comes out and hey, FUCK YOU BRETT FAVRE! DAMMIT! GET DADDY ANOTHER BEER!

Coming out around February 23rd-26th, if you trust Wiki.

Well, in North America and Europe. I don't know about anywhere else.

Anyways, I'm just wondering if this will be an actual game, or some sort of slightly better Plumbers Don't Wear Ties.

All I know is that if it's story is just soap opera, it's going to get passed over by most of the crowd, because that's mostly for the young adult-middle aged women, most of whom don't own PS3s.

And I don't think they're planning to port this to the Wii.

I think trying to portray Sexuality in the context of real emotion and character is a fantastic idea. Of course, it's not something every game needs, but if games do it where appropriate, it might serve as more steps to gaming being a valid artistic medium.

Getting the players to connect emotionally with the characters is subjective and difficult to achieve, but the more Games Designers try to do it, the better.
