Microsoft: Halo: Reach Will Be Biggest Game of 2010

A Microsoft executive claimed that Halo Reach could be the biggest game of 2010 across all platforms, planetary systems and temporal dimensions.

Stephen McGill, the director of marketing for the Xbox, said that CVG [http://www.amazon.com/Halo-Reach-Xbox-360/dp/B002BSA20M/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1280785608&sr=1-2] that he expects the game to bring new players to the franchise by taking the Halo universe to an "entirely new level."

"Our hope for Halo: Reach is to be the biggest title of 2010 not only for Xbox, but across all platforms - a forecast which has been mirrored by industry professionals," said McGill, without citing exactly which industry professionals. He went on:

Halo: Reach takes the legacy of Halo's rich multiplayer gameplay to an entirely new level, delivering experiences that we think old and new players alike will enjoy for years to come. The Halo franchise is an entertainment phenomenon comprised of best-selling novels, collectibles, industry acclaimed anime and genre-defining games that have already sold more than 30 million units worldwide.

While I don't think it's impossible for Halo Reach to move a lot of units, I think the game will be hard-pressed to make more than the franchise whose last installment made over $1 billion [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97446-Modern-Warfare-2-Breaks-1-Billion], especially if it's only coming out on one console.

There may be some Kool-Aid a-brewing in Redmond.

I highly doubt that, its a contender, but it lacks to originality to get good sales after the first week of release.

But then again an unoriginal concept didnt get GoTt either....(Yes I am refering to MW2, it wasnt that good)

What the hell is Halo: Reach supposed to be about anyways? Is it basically the unofficial Halo 4?

Yeah, right... I really don't see that happening.
Agreed. Halo, is Halo, is Halo. As they say. I think it might be an intresting game, but certainly not as big as CoD was to the industry.

I doubt if it will be the biggest game of 2010, but it will probably be in the top 10.

Note- I am a halo fan boy and so it took lots of pain to type it out.

Ok first of all I don't care how much you hate Halo are you really telling me you don't understand the logic behind the fact that established franchises sell more than new IPs?

Because if that's the case I'd suggest you give up posting about sales figures on gaming forums - especially as you're classing the game as unoriginal without even playing it...nice one.

Of course Halo will be a major contender for the biggest game of 2010 - in fact the only game that I feel will contend with it is Call of Duty, although after Modern Warfare 2 who knows if customers will want to buy yet another game in the franchise? Halo 3 was, if I recall correctly, the fastest selling game ever, at least until GTA 4 and Modern Warfare 2 were released - who's to say that the game won't sell extremely well, even if it is an Xbox 360 exclusive? A large established franchise with a lot of hype will always do well - as it's Halo I have no doubt this game will also sell well.

Nice reasoning, that post wasn't just made to boost your post count now was it?
I said what I thought and all that really needed to be said, I've long since passed the age where I give a rat's ass about post counts.
Then next time don't bother posting, your post is basically spam.

Something tells me it won't.

Since its coming out near the end of the year, while God of War 3 is coming in March.
I think God of War 3 will sell more.

I base that prediction on logic.
When do people buy more games, in March or around Christmas? Think logically...the majority of game sales are sold within the first week of the games release.

I can see it doing very well, but I think big multi-platform games like Final Fantasy 13 will end up out-selling it. I'd say it will be the best selling 360 game of 2010, though.
I disagree, whilst FF13 will be big, the fact it's a JRPG will turn people off the game - Halo and CoD are franchise everyone knows - Final Fantasy, whilst popular is less mainstream that those games.

Although it may be a good enough franchise, I somehow doubt it will be the biggest thing this year...
Somehow I think something else will sell better, such as Bad Company 2.
Really? You honestly believe Bad Company 2 a sequel to the mediocre selling BF:Bad Company, released during Q1, is going to sell more copies than the massive Halo franchise released at Christmas with Microsoft's hype machine behind it...you're deluded...there are a few big franchises that could best it - BF2 is not one of them.

I'm sure the yearly amount of sandwiches consumed will outsell GoW and CoD to.

That doesn't mean it's gonna be anything amazing.
Did he ever say that? See the point at the bottom of this post.

I seriously dought it though. Since a lot of the games that were supposed to be out in 2009 are coming up in 2010, Halo reach has a very little chance of being the biggest game of 2010. It still might be good, but not biggest game.
Name a franchise bar Call of Duty you think will best it then...and the word is "doubt".

Agayek said:
I'm 95% certain that it won't sell nearly as much as MW2 did, though it might outsell GOW3.
Of course it won't that was a massive franchise on almost all the major systems (and a port of CoD4 was put on the Wii) whilst Halo is an exclusive...he also didn't say they were competing against MW2 hence the "2010" part of the thread title.

Are you people complete idiots? He's not talking about the games quality, or your personal opinion of the game / franchise - he's talking about the number of units sold.

Bahaha.

Seems like they've taken a page from Molyneaux's book in the way of hyping-up their products.

No offence to Bungie, but I've grown tired of Halo. From endless hours of multiplayer on Halo 3, to being annoyed over purchasing Halo Wars after it turned out to suck, there's not much more Master Chief can do to keep me interested.

On the other hand, games like Mass Effect 2 and God of War 3 show huge promise, especially because they're working with fresh source material that hasn't been expounded in over five novels and five games.

Well I can confirm that I will not be buying it, especially if it is anything like ODST. The only good thing about that game was the big name actors they brought together for the voices. Everything in the box set could be released via DLC and at a cheaper cost to boot. The MYTHIC disk only makes the whole thing stink worse... My prediction it will move less than it's predessessors and will have a crap story line filled with cliches and token characters. In addition any multiplayer add-ons will be superfluous and bring little to over-all gameplay.

Of course it won't be original. When Bungie tries something original, they get slammed because people are still so fucking stupid they think it's just a glorified expansion pack. They may as well just make the same thing, becuase they'll get criticized for it anyway.

God 3: fantastic franchise but lacks the replayability to attract many buyers when a rental will suffice (I know it will for me)

CoD 7: in an "off year" where IW is not developing the game, therefore won't sell anywhere near MewTwo

Reach: prequel to an uber successful franchise that is a true successor to the trilogy (instead of the glorified expansion ODST)

I can see Reach being the top of these three titles. However, games like Mass Effect 2 and FF XIII are two games promising fantastic experiences that easily trump the previously mentioned. Not to mention the numerous other contenders yet to be announced or that I neglected. Any way that it turns out, this year will be legendary for gamers.

Yeah and maybe I'm a Chinese jetpilot. I enjoy Halo (don't have an Xbox, so don't own any) and I'm sure it will sell a fair amount, but the biggest game of the year? Halo is a much quieter release now than it used to be, and general interest seems to have moved on.

Even half the people I know that think Halo is the greatest game ever quit caring after Halo 3. I doubt it will do as good as ME2, FF XIII, or BF:BC.
