Rumor: Nintendo To Announce New Platform At GDC

An anonymous source in the games industry has leaked that Nintendo plans to announce a new platform at this year's Games Developers Conference in March.

We all know that Nintendo has been working on a successor to the Wii. The console was incredibly successful and it pushed gaming into new directions but as we get deeper into this generation, its lack of graphics and processing power are becoming more evident. Rumors have swirled for years that Nintendo was going to release an HD compatable console sooner rather than later. Yesterday, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said that they would have to come out with something more robust than just an HD Wii:

If asked if making the Wii compatible with high definition -- just making it compatible with high resolution -- will get players throughout the world to buy it, I would of course say, 'Do you think it would sell with just that? It needs something new.'

We may learn about Nintendo's plans as early as this March, as an industry source told Videogamer.com [http://www.videogamer.com/news/devs_already_working_on_new_nintendo_platform.html] that the Japanese company was planning on announcing it then.

"Just heard a rumour that you may be interested in," the anonymous source said. "Nintendo [is] going to announce a new platform at GDC. Some devs have already started work on it."

The choice of venue for such an announcement is interesting in itself. One thing the Wii has been criticized for is the lack of good third party games on the console. Perhaps by announcing the new console at the Game Developers Conference instead of at E3 will endear developers to the brand and get them on board making games for the new console earlier than they did with the Wii.

And according to the source, it appears that there is already people working on such games, even though it's unclear if the "devs" mentioned are from Nintendo-controlled studios or third parties.

It is also possible that the "new platform" could be an updated DS. Iwata mentioned both a new DS and a new Wii at an investors Q&A recently, but couldn't elaborate because he was afraid of leaking too much.

"If there were no rival makers in the world, I'd could give examples of the things that we are considering," he said. "However, for competitive reasons, I cannot give specifics today on the what or when of the things we're considering."

Be intresting to see what this actually is. If the rumours are true...and if it is a successor to the Wii (IF) then it would certainly shake up Sony and Microsoft a little.

I have a feeling it might be a updated DS, or even a new handheld entirely. The DS is already going on its sixth year in market, so we might see one with improved hardware specs, if not better. It also might tie into the new Pokemon games that Iwata mentioned...

As long as they ditch the motion controls and keep Virtual Console, I'm in. I was raised on Nintendo, remember?

Lol hypocrite!

Anyway OT:
I have every console of theirs since the snes, the wii was the shittiest over all. Couldn't care for their countless 're-inventing the handheld' attempts so if it's that I will ignore it.

They are way behind with the whole HD thing anyway so that be nice (Brawl / LOZ in HD now please). Less peripherals and more actual games would be nice, and less motion controlling.

Even though there's a little niggling thought in the back of my head that's screaming [small]"WAAAY TOOO SOOON!!!!!! WAAAIT TILLL NEXXXT YEAAAR!!!!!!!"[/small] I still want to see if this rumor is actually true, mainly to see if Nintendo is going to go with it's new motion-sensor premise it introduced with the Wii, or if it will go back to it's traditional gaming roots.

Anyway, as long as it's not the VirtuaBoy 2, it's bound to make ridiculous amounts of money.

I have my doubts.

Considering the immense commercial success of the Wii, Nintendo doesn't really need to release a brand new next-gen console, criticisms be damned - they're still making huge amounts of money on it (despite hints of its decline in popularity), so why bother replacing it?

I can understand if their doing a PS3 Slim-esque overhaul of the Wii, but I doubt it'll be a bonafied brand new console.

It's the WiiPhone.

Basically it's an iPhone, except with a Nintendo logo instead of Apple. Also, you don't touch the screen, you point a tiny little wiimote at it.

I don't follow. How am I a hypocrite?

A new either of them would be cool... But the problem is, unless they keep the fancy technology, they can't be backwards compatible... But a processing power upgrade would be nice, I'm getting sick of the Wii's games being bad because they couldn't have too much on there lest they destroy the pathetic processing power. Then again, RE4 is on there, and that's fairly big, and quite pretty...

This is completely laughable. Only the pseudo-analyst Pachter has been repeatedly speculating on a Wii HD and it makes absolutely no sense to do.

I'm not usually one to hurl insults on the internet but this article is incredibly stupid. It is obviously not going to happen even if a anonymous source suggests that they heard a rumour. That is as good a source as any random forum dweller...

It needs to be a new handheld, because the DS is already 6 years old, it's time for completely new handheld harware.

it'd be nice if it were a wii that did HD, y'know, so it doesn't look garbo on a new TV if playing much other than wii sports
but that's unlikely.

The only thing imaginable is that Nintendo would start going two ways at once: pleasing their original fanbase with one console and the 'casual gaming crowd' with the Wii. This is still pretty unlikely though. I doubt there will be a new console by Nintendo anytime soon. Why should they? The Wii does print money (I figured out how).
