I'm hoping that this unannounced system is more along the lines of a gameboy type thing, you know, with real controllers and some damn fun games with it. And just to justify the target audience it has a few knives sticking out of it, you know, to turn off the famlily friendly nature of it allowing for M rated games to be realesed for it.

Ahhh, one can dream can't he.

Lame. I don't want a fine looking game getting a bunch of pointless gimmicky controls. That's what made hte Wii respectable, it didn't hide its shittiness behind the cover of pretty graphics.

Let me guess, with 3.14159265 times the processing power of the current Wii.

Well that would honestly be the shortest recorded console lifespan.

I just hope, whatever form factor it is, Nintendo decides to use up-to-date hardware, not an archaic 68MHz cpu like for the DS, or an updated Broadway chip like the Wii.

A dual ARM Cortex-powered handheld would be pretty rape right now. Even if it were cartridge-based.

I'm going to file this under 'bullshit'. With a Mario game, a Metroid game, the Vitality Sensor and possibly a Zelda game hitting all this year, let alone the likes of Last Story, Zangeki no Reginleiv and the like Nintendo would be insane to announce a new platform now. Plus there's the fact that the Wii still sells mountains! This is nothing more than Internet gossip.

If anything, this will be interesting to see play out, and see what it is. Personally, I'm happy with my 360 and PC.

What they should do is re-release the N64.

I certainly hope we come away from this retarded little phase of motion control. Although Manhunt 2 was fun I personally hate it.

I hope that their "something new" doesn't include the Vitality Sensor.
I thought that the Wii was in the least need of a replacement, so I'm actually leaning more towards a DS replacement. A new Nintendo handheld, combined with Sony's idiotic devotion to keeping the PSP around for 10 years, will pwn the PSP and bring everyone back to the good old Gameboy-only days (imho, those days were actually not that good).
If it is a replacement for the Wii, it would likely be one of three cases:

1) It's a console that walks the line between casual and hardcore gaming. This would be a huge kick in the sack for MS and Sony, and Nintendo will dominate the gaming market for the rest of my lifetime (*sob* I don't like any of the Nintendo franchises *sob*).
2) It's a bit of a return to the hardcore scene. Very unlikely, because this makes no economic sense. It would take a huge bite out of MS and Sony, and might actually allow the Wii to extend its lifespan to 12 years or more. They could simply offer both consoles, one for the more casual crowd and another for the more dedicated.
3) They go full out for the casual crowd. This could either be a success so huge that Nintendo can now afford to buy Europe (including the citizens and all their posessions), or flop because people don't feel like upgrading from their Wii (I still think they totally should have pulled a bit of MS and made the Wii slightly less durable). Either way, this option won't have a massive impact on MS and Sony.

Just my non-professional analysis :D

Despite their statements to the contrary, Nintendo is pretty much synonymous with re-releasing the same thing with minor upgrades so I wouldn't be shocked by a "new" Wii with a different coloured case, HD support and built in Motion Plus in it's wiimotes. And, just as with Apple, I'm sure it will sell a bajillion units.

I'm not buying another console for a while other than a portable one...
Computer games are good enough as it is.

So Nintendo might be the company that kickstarts the next-gen...hmm.
Yup! Nintendo'll kick start the next-gen.... by releasing a console with current-gen specs. That way Nintendo will be able to continues its long standing tradition of, you know, actually MAKING money when it sells a console, rather than relying the sales of peripherals and games alone. Those are just icing on the cake!

But really, I don't see Nintendo announcing a new home console this year. Like has already been said by others, there's a whole shwack of games lined up to come out. Even *announcing* a new console would hurt sales of at least the Wii. Probably not the games so much, but... Why tell people there's a better drug just around the corner when you're still trying to push what you're selling? Naw, I say if anything, it'll probably be another handheld. Though... the DSi came out not that long ago. Hmm.

Or maybe... it'll be an add-on to the Wii? Y'know, like the Sega CD. Or the Sega 32X! Hah, if that were the case I think that I'd crap myself laughing...

Wii doesn't have a terrible line-up... just not as good as the competition.

I mean Sony and Microsoft have consistently released on average Six A-grade games every year, A-grade being games with near universal acclaim and considered "worth getting", that's a steady 1 game every two months give or take depending on personal preference. And that isn't including worthy Downloadable titles as well.

But the Wii has struggled to deliver quantity of quality games. The first party games have been good but you're struggling to get 3 decent title per year with that and third party has been lack-luster and largely token.

And of course, though the graphics have been good, there is nothing ugly about Mario Galaxy, they just haven't got that HD "wow" factor that inevitably means for so many gamers they go for Ps3/360 over Wii.

However I am intrigued by the PC emulator, Dolphin, which can not only emulate Wii games but also up the resolution from 480p to 720p with added anti-aliasing and a few other improvements bring the graphics almost on par with typical Xbox 360 games.

Could a "Wii HD" do the same and retro-actively HD-ise all the Wii games released so far? Possibly with a custom emulation profile for each game?
