Sony Worried About Move Shovelware

If you're concerned that the PlayStation Move [http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-Move-Starter-Bundle-3/dp/B002I0J4NE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278951043&sr=8-1-catcorr] might herald the arrival of dozens of minigame collections, you're not alone, because Sony is, too.

It's not exactly a secret that Sony has taken a few lessons from the Wii for its motion control, and the similarities between the PlayStation Move and the Wii remote are causing some to worry that the PS3 might get flooded with low-quality, cash-in shovelware titles, including Sony Worldwide Studios VP Scott Rohde.

"It's obviously a concern, but we've taken advantage of the fact that it is a PS3. Sports Champions, for example, has been in development for a while. We're not announcing it yet, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the scope that's offered in that title ... there's a lot of long-term play value in there."

Rohde also reaffirmed Sony's commitment to its existing hardcore market, saying: "our heritage: we're never going to compromise our core; great exclusive games. This is a new initiative to us. Some teams are looking into how they might incorporate motion control into some existing plans; others are totally focused on making the best sequels to the games we all love. It's not something I'm worried about."

The PlayStation Move will be launched later this year and will allegedly have twenty first party launch titles, as well as games from 36 third party developers.

You don't say, Sony?

Still, I stand by the fact that if developers don't want to force games to work after the Move-controller, they don't have to do it, unlike with the Wii, where they basically don't have any option. Just a speculation, but I don't think Sony will see as much shovelware as the Wii.

Well yes, but so will Natal... The PS2 had shovelware... Reel Fishing? HA!

Calumon: My Playstation doesn't move... and what does a shovel have to do with this? Can I just play?

And it doesn't have shovelware now?

But seriously, I don't see it. The architecture of the PS3 would make it hard for the shovelware producing studios to code their games, thus requiring more up-front expense for a (possibly) low turnout. Sony's fears are unfounded, and I have a feeling that they're saying this to differentiate themselves from Nintendo.

They can be worried all they like, it's still going to happen. Shovelware is inevitable with technology that closely resembling eachother. Natal, in my opinion, has a bit of a lead when it comes to shovelware dodging, given it more closely resembled motion capture than having some sort of object with a sensor in it. It would take much more time to actually recreate the games on Natal from the Wii than from the Wii to Move.

I just want to know why is has a red light bulb on top.

What's if for? hailing a hooker-cab? Guiding a plane onto an aircraft carrier at night?

The PS3's development is too expensive/difficult to allow a large mass of shovelware to be created for the 'Move.'

Many of us know that PS3 is hard to program for. That's the only time it's gonna be helpful. Sure, there will be shovelware - but much less of it than on the Wii.

Im assuming it has the same role as the infra-red sensor on the wiimote? Although whilst on the wiimote the sensor is on a flat plane, because the Move has a ball it allows the system to detect it from multiple angles, not just when you are pointing the remote at the screen.

Thats what im guessing

Doubt they will get shovelware. Isn't making games for the PS3 expensive?

I love how developers and producers are spouting off about increasing their fan base and trying to appeal to the mass market. When are they going to understand that their fan base is what sustains them and new customers are going to dry up soon enough. You can only sustain growth for so long, and those 'casuals' are being wooed by several others. Pretty soon they will lose sight and customers trying to appeal to the wider audience with flashy gimmicks and crappy games.

I think it a sensor of some kind. I remember them saying something about how it changes colour depending on your surroundings so that it has a better chance of detecting where the sensor is.

Well, dear Sony, if you are worried, perhaps it's time to scrap the whole motion control malarkey altogether, hm?
Just sayin' that I'd rather use it Minority Report style to do powerpoint presentations than to play games...

I'm sure that Sports Champions will be nothing like Wii sports...

Motion control will attract shovel ware, its just one of those things. If you've had a creativity bypass you can still dream up mini games for motion controls.
