David Cage: Microsoft Falsely Represented Natal's Capabilities

Can Natal scan objects like skateboards directly into your games? No, says Quantic Dream head David Cage.

Quantic Dream's David Cage, fresh off his release of Heavy Rain, is interested in Microsoft's Natal, but isn't that enthused about the way it was presented to consumers at E3 2009. As he told Destructoid [http://www.destructoid.com/david-cage-frustrated-by-microsoft-s-sci-fi-natal-presentation-169975.phtml], Microsoft's trailer for the device (shown alongside this article) certainly sparked curiosity, but wasn't entirely honest.

"I was a bit frustrated that they presented it with a sci-fi-type presentation," he said. At one point in the trailer, a punk skater kid holds his skateboard up to Natal and scans it into a skateboarding game to ride around on. Cage says this just isn't possible as shown.

Cage talked about "when the kid comes in with the skateboard and the laser ray, scanning the skateboard, and then it's in the game," and rolled his eyes. "We are in the industry; we know what's feasible and what's not." This portion of the trailer doesn't look that incredible to me as I know it only means that an image is being scanned in, but it probably does imply to the less-knowledgable general public that real world objects can be scanned into videogames with Natal.

Cage feels that "it was a little bit lying to present it that way, because it will let [consumers] think that they will [see] something that they are not really close to getting." Microsoft did put that "actual features and functionality may vary" at the bottom of Natal's trailer, but I think we all can admit that it looked a bit too futuristic when we first saw it. After seeing Natal demonstrated on television and by the enthusiast community, it's somewhat proven itself, but we won't know the truth until it gets into the hands of the truly unbiased consumer. However, E3 2010 should reveal some new information on it first, as Microsoft has said it'll be showing the full Natal lineup then [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98959-Microsoft-to-Show-Full-Natal-Lineup-at-E3-2010].

Did that boy and his skateboard just get beamed up to the Enterprise for a moment? Jeez, was that a cheesy scan effect.

Of course Natal cannot perform like that. The tech just isn't there. I expect to hear reports of people smashing the damn thing through a wall or something because it won't work as advertised.

Jeez, the more I see that trailer the more I doubt the Natal's capabilities.

And don't even get me started on that con of a "game," Milo...

When i saw the advert i didn't think it was like scaning any potential object and digitising it into a game

Promising things they can't deliver? Hmmmm.

It's quite unprofessional for him to express a blatantly bias opinion. How the fuck would he know what Natal is capable of, when he is part of Sony? Besides only an idiot wouldn't take that video with a pinch of salt. Perhaps Cage should should talk to Peter Molyneaux and you both bullshit each other until one or both of your heads explode.

Ummm, dunno about all of you, but when I saw the teaser I understood what it was really doing. I can't remember precisely but wasn't it actually explained to the audience that it was just scanning the image to place as a skin on the in game board?

Yeah, the commercial did seem like an epic Microsoft-Casual gamer wank to me. You will never take my controller away from me!

Well good thing I thought this looked like crap to start with, I honestly think this will go the way of the Eye Toy about a year after it comes out.

He thinks a project headed by Peter Molyneux might not be able to deliver on it's promises?

Shock horror! The man's clearly a terminal optimist.

I look forward to Natal coming out, if only to see what it can do, rather than what the hype thinks it can do. If it's just a variation on Eyetoy I will not be impressed.

This is the first I've seen of Natal, mostly because I knew it's complete too-good-to-be-true bullshit, but also because it's just gonna be a big disappointment when I fork out all that cash to get an Xbox and Natal, hook it up, find out it doesn't work properly and have to take the long cold hurt-but-smug stare from my PS3...

Well, it's probably just the money thing...

But that other stuff, yeah, that too.

The family in the commercial has to be some of the wussiest and most cheerful people I have ever seen.
