I just don't get it ... if it can't scan an image and paste it over a 3d model ... how can it pick up on me smiling or frowning and how I talk for this "Milo" thing ... it's making me feel like it's no better then the eyetoy ... which wasn't that impressive when it came out like 6 years ago ...

natal? controversy? ps3 fanboys saying its shit and xbox 360 saying its god? what is this madness?! (ps3 fanboy here)

OT: Whatever turns out, it wont be able to do what people expect, period. even if it does everything in that commercial, and i mean EVERYTHING, it still wont live up to expectations, because thats how things go. its not a gift from the prophet molyneux, but it isn't a cardboard box either. so there
my friend, nothing would make me happier. Its not fanboyish hatred, its just the fact that so many heads would simultaneously explode while some fanboys try to argue that 'its still an alternative to controllers'
Though, if it turns out to actually be a cardboard box, that would be downright fantastic.

David Cage may have made a PS3 exclusive game, but Quantic Dream isn't owned by Sony.

alright I couldn't even make it through the whole video without wanting to call b.s. on this. the kid says "scan" and the toy scans his skateboard? this isn't a HAL computer... this damn thing isn't even KITT. I tell my 360 to quit being a pain in my ass all the time, and it can't even do that, but this little buttmunch can get his to scan his dorky skateboard to play some Tony Hawk rip-off game?!
I don't even recall any mention of the Natal to have any sort of voice activation ability before this point. and anyone who has owned a MS headset will tell you the microphones often sound like you are under water... so I can only guess at how good this system will work. ever call an automated line you have to speak at for a voice prompt? those have been around for years and they still suck, but MS has the magic key to make it work?

and they push at the end you can enjoy your 360 without a controller... so if you don't touch the controller or the console, how in the hell do you turn the thing on?! nobody in the video had a controller anywhere near them! I went back through to pay attention to what 360 they had... it's a little hard to see since it is stuffed into that entertainment center, but it appears to be the arcade version of the console. they couldn't even feature an elite model to push Natal? doesn't that seem kinda strange?

before I was not against the project Natal concept. the more I hear about it, the less inclined I am to believe this device will live up to reasonable expectations.

has MS taken into account that perhaps some users might be disabled? you can sit in a wheelchair and use a controller... bit trickier to accomplish playing any game that requires the use of your legs in a situation like that. I would feel like such a jerk if I was dancing around in some game while a friend gave me a dirty look because they can't move their legs.

I'd just like to point out that when Natal was announced, the very same types of people in this thread now saying they are skeptical have said that they're unsure about it now.

Generally I'm wrong about hardware like this. I was wrong with the Wii up until the Motion+ and I was sure I was going to be wrong about both the Natal and the PS3 Move.

Sadly, I do think I was right originally when I said that gaming needs a level of sense in order to be worthwhile. Otherwise, it will feel gimmicky.

Of course, the Natal would be great for peeking around corners in FPS games or looking to your left and right in racers (would have to make head movement=head turning), but both of those things still require a degree of hands-on play.

To put it bluntly, this is the only reason why the Move trumps Natal at this moment. That's not really saying much though.

So...?
Most people would probably be aware that it can't do everything, just yet. None the less, if it can even do half the stuff on the video then it will be amazing.

Actually it does have voice commands. And you can turn the console on via voice command, and Natal, supposedly, will sign you onto your profile/gamertag via voice and facial recognition. Though how well it does all that remains to be seen.

This was all explained last year at E3.

OT: its funny how David Cage who just released a major ps3 exclusive is the one to speak out against natal's smoke and mirrors so to speak
Funk does state that Cage is interested in Natal, just that he believes Microsoft are misleading the uniformed (ie non escapist/IGN/Kotaku-reading) consumers about the capabilities of Natal.

I have no doubt a man such as cage who has a reputation with experimenting with the gaming medium would be interested in such a system. However, I was not calling him biased simply stating I found it funny that Cage who recently dealt a blow for the os3 fanboys with the exclusive heavy rain was the one to catch natal with its trousers down

The voice recognition will be a major pain in the ass to anyone with an accent or heavy voice.

Also the skating thing? The scan could work if the kids hands weren't in the way but the controlling was absolute bullshit. The difference in feet movement for a kickflip and a 360 flip is borderline impossible to perform without something tangible under your feet as for the 360 flip you need to scoop with the back leg.

Also when they imposed the skeleton onto the body? It didn't have any ankles. They expect us to think it can do Skate?

I rant about shit like this s don't mind me.

Report: David Cage Falsely Represents Capabilities of His Own Gaming Software.

After years of waiting, David Cage has finally been taken to task by the gaming media for utterly failing to create the interactive story experiences he blathers on about incessantly in interview after interview. When asked why he lies like Molyneux, he bleated "But...but...QTE's are easy to implement!"

I could care less about any kind of motion control...but this is just too much.

I'd just like to remind Microsoft that some of us LIKE HAVING A CONTROLLER!!

Oh yeah and the Star Trek-like scanning effect was hardly believable. And to they really expect us to believe that the voice recognition actually works that well.
It's over-hyped, but to be honest, the voice recognition in that video isn't even that improbable.
I've used the Voice recognition systems in various versions of windows...

And the one in windows 7 works better than you might expect. It can cope with proper dictation and commands reasonably well, though it's still frustrating as hell sometimes.

But, in a situation like this, where there's maybe 10 valid commands at any given point in time, it's quite possible to get it to be reasonably reliable, unless you have a particularly difficult accent.

Remember, with voice recognition, the following applies:

Less possible things you can say = easier for a computer to recognise correctly...

Microsoft shows Natal doing something people haven't seen before:
OMG M$ is lying it can't really do that BS!!1!

Microsoft shows Natal doing something people have seen before:
Pft Natal is just the eyetoy what a joke xbox sucks.

Could we try to be at least a little less transparent here?

So Cage is essentially saying "sure it can do what they show, but some people might not be smart enough to avoid improperly generalizing this one feature." I have trouble seeing this as a problem, or at least Microsoft's problem.

(FWIW, I love my 360, but have little or no interest in Natal...)

...I never though, nor does anyone I know think you were scanning in the actual object. The kid was playing in skate, why would you need to scan a board into Skate? The game comes with skateboards. I'm pretty sure everyone on earth except for this guy knew right off the bat that Natal was just scanning in the decals on the board.

People saying it's just like the eyetoy are being a little dismissive of its capabilities.

As has been said before, it's capabilities will not be shown until E3, but unless MS is just bullshitting for the hell of it, this thing will not just use movement on the screen to interact with virtual items like the eyetoy did, it will actually be creating full 3D models of scanned items in the game.

Look at the Jimmy Fallon Show demo from a while back. It wasn't just looking at movement, it was actually rendering a rough version of the player inside the virtual area, with depth and everything.

That being said, what it can actually do remains until E3 to be seen.

Although the rumored $50 price point is definitely not a minus either.
