Spock Warps into Permanent Star Trek Retirement

The venerable Leonard Nimoy is going to be hanging up his blue shirt, bowl haircut, and tricorder very soon.

Spock, one of the most well known characters from the Star Trek franchise since its inception in the late 1960s, is soon to be gone as we once knew him. Leonard Nimoy, the actor that played Spock for more than 30 years, has announced that he is retiring from show business and the Star Trek [http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Sequels-DVD/b/ref=sr_tc_2_0?ie=UTF8&node=265164&qid=1278527458&sr=1-2-tc] convention circuit soon.

Beyond a few more appearances, Nimoy plans to live out the rest of his days without pointy ears and the overuse of logic. He recently reprised the role of "old" Spock in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek film remake, and has a small part as the mysterious William Bell in Abrams' television show Fringe. However, he doesn't plan to take on anymore acting work.

"I want to get off the stage. Also, I don't think it would be fair to Zachary Quinto," Nimoy told the Toronto Sun. Quinto, also known for playing Sylar on Heroes, took on the role of "young" Spock in Abrams' Star Trek film. Nimoy is more than happy to hand over the role, saying: "[Quinto] is a terrific actor, he looks the part, and it's time to give him some space. And I'm very flattered the character will continue."

Nimoy's retirement has nothing to do with an identity crisis. At 79 years old, Nimoy has been in the business for an amazing 60 years. "Since Star Trek began, I've never had to worry about where the next job was," he says. If only everyone could be so lucky. He's done more than just act, also directing multiple Star Trek movies and making appearances throughout the entertainment landscape.

The bottom line is: if you want to meet Leonard Nimoy without having to climb over his fence and get arrested, you might want to figure out where he'll be in the coming weeks. He deserves a decade or two without rabid fans asking him to pinch their necks every five minutes.

Good for him! Also, this mean the next Star Trex film won't have him shoved into the plot, mucking it up from one that could...MAKE SENSE.

Good on him. They're right, after 60 years, he deserves it. As much as I like him and the whole cast, as well as many other actors like Sean Connery, Gene Wilder, and many other actors getting up there in age, they deserve their retirement, preferably somewhere far, far away where they don't have to be bothered.

If I were him, I probably would have retired a long time ago, like as soon as I could afford it.

To be honest, I don't think I'll remember Leonard Nimoy for Spock.

It has to be this.

I actually thought he was in his 80s for some reason but all the same I think after so much time in the business he could do with a nice retirement.

I wish him peace in his final days.

Truthfully I'm grateful that he kept the "Spock" thing going for us fans all these years, because I seem to remember hearing he utterly hated it. He brought joy to many at the expense of his own.

I was told, today, that he is going to be at the "something"-con in Calgary, Alberta this weekend. I was also told that Brent Spinner(sp?) is going to be there along with a couple of BSG actors.

So if you don't have to study for finals (like I do) ... and are anywhere near Calgary ... get ye self there. Where else can you get to see Mr.Spock and Mr. Data under one roof?

I remember his documentary work for History Channel. Other than that, he is retiring from a money maker indeed. There are many Trekkies that will gladdly nerd-out for the man. But, honestly, I would be very tired myself of being typecasted in to ONE ROLE FOREVER.

Agreed completely, he's one of those few actors who has worked for their entire lives, been great entertainers and worked dammned hard for the fans, and definitely desreves a rest and a chance to retire gracefully and happily. People like Leonard Nimoy, alongside people like Ian McKellen and Bruce Forsyth (UK entertainer for anyone who doesn't know) deserve their time to rest. They've earned it.

I'm glad he's setting his own terms for this, though I hope he will still make the odd live/voice appearance, especially with "Futurama" poised to return this September.

The idea that the fans would ever stop trying to get a signed Vulcan ears from him is... illogical.

Very illogical.

He's really had a long and varied career, from acting to directing, work as a writer, voice actor, and photographer. It will be a shame not having new work from him, but he's 79, and deserves his leisure.
