4chan, Anonymous, and the Horrors of the Interweb

In no way, shape, or form am I attempting to advertise any of the sites or incidences mentioned in this post. They only reason they are here is because they are essential to the story, as well as the conversation I aim to start with this thread.

So today in my web surfing, I came across this article: http://boxxystory.blogspot.com/ . For those of you too lazy to click on it and read it, it essentially details the rise and fall of Boxxy, a sixteen year old girl from California. From what I gathered, she become kind of an internet phenomenon when somebody from 7chan stumbled across her videos or something like that.

From there it was posted on 4chan, every bodies favorite internet mosh pit. Needless to say, 4chan was divided. While half of the site loved Boxxy, the other half despised her. As /b/ became more and more spammed with post about Boxxy, the people on the "Haters" side organized an attack to crash the site and kill the "Boxxy cancer". This attack was pulled off, and needless to say 4chan was crashed.

Let that sink in for a second. This Boxy debate got so bad anonymous actually erupted in civil war. when the site when back up, moderation had a crack down, and even mentioning Boxxy gave you a ban. However, things were still bad, so a splinter group of anonymous formed the CRBC, with the intent of bringing down Boxxy before anonymous could.

they were successful. Pretty much all of Boxxy's personal info that could be collected ended up being posted on /b/, and most of her accounts (including youtube and myspace) were hacked and destroyed.

So ended the epic that was the Boxxy story.

Now, I may be alone here with this, but does that not scare anyone else? Anonymous is a powerful beast. It has attacked many foe's, both in real life and on the internet. Their power is freakin ridiculous.

I mean think about it. Lets say some random /b/ user is trolling around and stumbles upon the Escapist. If he doesn't like what he finds, this web site would have maybe a week before it is buried under trolls and hackers.

Anonymous is too many hackers in one place I find. They are like the Orks from Warhammer 40k: They are the most powerful force on the internet, if they stop fighting each other.

What I'm worried is one day they will see just how bad they could make things. What if they crashed Google? Facebook? Hell, what if some lucky hacker managed to hack banking website, and post the info? This girl Boxxy, she was simply a 16 year old trying her hand at Youtube. Look what happened: all her personal info was post on /b/. That could be me next time.

Am I the only one who thinks that Anonymous is too powerful?

EDIT: Clear a few things up. I don't have anything against anonymous, /b/, 4chan, or anything else I have listed here. I am just simply saying that I think they have a lot of power, and that it may be used for evil (or as much evil as a bunch of hackers and spammers can be)

Also, I don't think anonymous will attack any of the stuff I have listed, I'm just simply saying what if they were to organize and attack. It's a hypothetical.

You are only powerful if you are motivated. Anonymous is not motivated. They will not do anything unless they have reason to.

That's people's fault. You keep your nose clean and don't be annoying and stuff like that won't happen.

Anonymous is too powerful. I know: I am one of them. Don't worry, I'm not one of those jerks who would do anything like that. I see a lot of participation in it, though, and it pisses me off. the one good thing is that Anonymous is a full-on anarchy, so it would be difficult to crash something like Facebook or Google. Let us pray that it never happens, and that all of the people who ruin others' lives or post CP get killed in a giant car crash.

Then we must do our part by sabotaging 4chan as much as possible, keep them fighting amongst themselves so they never unite. You know, like China did with the Mongols (Until they united and conquered half the world) except we are dealing with a much more barbaric force here.

Even if they are Powerful they still hide their name, means they are weak.

I have never really viewed 4chan as a threat or powerful. It is just a bunch of people who spam old memes at each other all day long. The paranoia with hacking and stealing accounts is ridiculous. As long as you don't open emails from unknown users (that and don't run every .exe you find) you are pretty safe.

So very very true. Just kick/block/IP ban the trolls and it will be resolved within a few days.

Why would anon bring down the Escapist? I guess I am an anon since I go on 4chan, and I love this site. OP, you stereotype 4chan too much. Yes, /b/ can be bad, but the other boards are pretty good. I lurk on a lot of /a/ and /v/ threads.

You cracked me up!

I don't think anon is all that powerful, I think these days they niggle and pester more than they actually damage. Anon is disorganized, selfish, and as mentioned before, unmotivated. I think that site is more or less a toothless old internet boogieman more than anything, which is fine. Sometimes they bring up funny nonsense, but mostly they're just kids with nothing better to do than to pick on each other.

A lot of the shit I've seen that's been associated with the 4chan universe has made my sides split but the whole anon thing and being proud of being an internet tough guy is just retarded.

Anonymous is indeed very powerful but it is also like a hurricane: mighty power without any control or direction. They are not a professional organization just a bunch of kids having too much time. They will never "band together" to do anything major other than troll scientology
