In no way, shape, or form am I attempting to advertise any of the sites or incidences mentioned in this post. They only reason they are here is because they are essential to the story, as well as the conversation I aim to start with this thread.
So today in my web surfing, I came across this article: http://boxxystory.blogspot.com/ . For those of you too lazy to click on it and read it, it essentially details the rise and fall of Boxxy, a sixteen year old girl from California. From what I gathered, she become kind of an internet phenomenon when somebody from 7chan stumbled across her videos or something like that.
From there it was posted on 4chan, every bodies favorite internet mosh pit. Needless to say, 4chan was divided. While half of the site loved Boxxy, the other half despised her. As /b/ became more and more spammed with post about Boxxy, the people on the "Haters" side organized an attack to crash the site and kill the "Boxxy cancer". This attack was pulled off, and needless to say 4chan was crashed.
Let that sink in for a second. This Boxy debate got so bad anonymous actually erupted in civil war. when the site when back up, moderation had a crack down, and even mentioning Boxxy gave you a ban. However, things were still bad, so a splinter group of anonymous formed the CRBC, with the intent of bringing down Boxxy before anonymous could.
they were successful. Pretty much all of Boxxy's personal info that could be collected ended up being posted on /b/, and most of her accounts (including youtube and myspace) were hacked and destroyed.
So ended the epic that was the Boxxy story.
Now, I may be alone here with this, but does that not scare anyone else? Anonymous is a powerful beast. It has attacked many foe's, both in real life and on the internet. Their power is freakin ridiculous.
I mean think about it. Lets say some random /b/ user is trolling around and stumbles upon the Escapist. If he doesn't like what he finds, this web site would have maybe a week before it is buried under trolls and hackers.
Anonymous is too many hackers in one place I find. They are like the Orks from Warhammer 40k: They are the most powerful force on the internet, if they stop fighting each other.
What I'm worried is one day they will see just how bad they could make things. What if they crashed Google? Facebook? Hell, what if some lucky hacker managed to hack banking website, and post the info? This girl Boxxy, she was simply a 16 year old trying her hand at Youtube. Look what happened: all her personal info was post on /b/. That could be me next time.
Am I the only one who thinks that Anonymous is too powerful?
EDIT: Clear a few things up. I don't have anything against anonymous, /b/, 4chan, or anything else I have listed here. I am just simply saying that I think they have a lot of power, and that it may be used for evil (or as much evil as a bunch of hackers and spammers can be)
Also, I don't think anonymous will attack any of the stuff I have listed, I'm just simply saying what if they were to organize and attack. It's a hypothetical.
