I think they have raided here before, and failed every time.
We get raided more often that you think. I was on /b/ about 30 minutes ago. There was a thread that was said "What forum should we troll? First to 5 votes wins." The Escapist got 3 votes, but the forum that won was a hipster website, if I remember correctly. We just narrowly dodged a bullet there.

4chan may be powerful, but they are unfocused. Trying to organize a 4chan raid is nearly impossible, unless there is some clear and obvious task that needs to be done (i.e. scientology).

What is much scarier because they have far more power and focus are most world governments. Look at China, where people go to jail for 10+ years just for talking crap about the government. Though it may not be that bad in "western" nations like Australia, UK, and the USA, it is getting there. The more I read about Australia's governmental intervention in cyberspace the more paranoid I become.

I appreciate Anonymous, I hope they go through with bringing down Scientology.
I do too, they are the yang to the government's ying. If it wasn't for Anonymous, and similarly structured internet-groups, the government might become too powerful. EDIT: When I say government I really mean government AND big business

You are only powerful if you are motivated. Anonymous is not motivated. They will not do anything unless they have reason to.
Funny how the first response to this thread basically sums it all up and makes all other discussion irrelevant. Almost makes me think the entirety of the internet is orchestrated in a bid to get to paranoid conspiracy nuts/those lacking in a sense of humour.

EDIT: I posted assuming this was another "4chan is the worst website on the internet" thread.

What happened to Boxxy was terrible and I have sympathy for her to an extent, though I would personally strangle any camwhore who posts videos of themself on the internet for the world to see, particularly videos of them pretending(yes she was acting) to be the most hyperactive annoying ***** in the world. These videos were apparently for her friends, then she should have made them private to be honest. If you post videos of yourself being retarded on the internet, people will find them and they will get angry; they are not right to be, but they will be angry.

Hell, what if some lucky hacker managed to hack banking website, and post the info?
There was a massive cyber-terrorism attack a few months ago that compromised numerous businesses. Plus Microsoft Hotmail suffered a breach of security that leaked multiple account details. It wouldn't be the first time anything like that has happened.

I remember a topic coming up here a few months back based on an article about 4Chan and a few of the Internet Legends. It's a good read, if slightly terrifying. Here's the article.

I can't seem to locate the original attack posting, just the aftermath results of Google's battle with China.

Imagining the members of The Escapist in all-out war against 4Chan is a powerful idea. I think I'll write a novel about that.
"4Chan struck The Escapist, but the mighty E struck back in a way the world had never yet seen."

Off-Topic: Holy poo, Charisma and iggyus have nearly the same Watchmen avatar!

Anonymous seems scary from the outside, but the insider knowledge is that they're all just a bunch of poor lonely fucks.

I am a regular 4chan user, but you'd never have known unless I had told you.

I tend to stay away from /b/, and only really ever go there for goofy pictures to use on my various different accounts on a myriad of websites. I stick to /g/, /wg/, and /hr/.

I would think the legal consequences would keep them back. There is a diffrence between hacking a 16 year old who is proably not propperly protected and hacking a Bank that has an army of lawyers at their side.

I've always regarded Anonymous with some respect and awe. I've always thought their intentions were good spirited, and I remember thinking that something big was gonna go down on that day when they organized that country wide protest of Scientology churches. Of course, there was no mention at all of it in the news, cause no one cares about the internet. And that's the thing. I do know that anonymous have attacked people in real life but it's never been anything to bad from what I can tell. Anonymous have power, but only on the internet, and the internet has very little impact on the mainstream media. So I think they have, and always will take a back seat, simply because they will always be ignored by the majority.

That said, I don't really have anything against the group. I actually think they are kinda neat.

4chan has no members.

Anonymous is a group of unidentified individuals from various websites (including 4chan), most of which do not know each other and never will. They are basically just opinionated people of various age/gender/ethic groups who have the time and motivation to talk about various topics online including Japanese anime, hardcore porn, videogames, politics, cooking, and just about everything else. Rarely do they unify under a singular goal, and when it appears that that have done so (as was the case with Scientology), that was actually only a small subsection of the entire group. Anonymous can never be disbanded, destroyed or defeated, because as soon as you do take down a few key members, the group will reorganize and regain it's strength. In that sense, Anonymous is basically internet cancer.

If you've ever posted a comment online without identifying yourself then you are Anonymous.

EDIT: 4chan didn't create Anonymous, Anonymous has always existed in one form or another (Writing on a bathroom wall, fliers littering a busy street, a person's initials carved into a tree, etc.). It was Anonymous that created 4chan.

"Anonymous", in the most general terms, refers to a group of individuals that tend to congregate on a few specific boards, like 4chan's /b/, that attempt to form a sort of loose "internet militia", aimed at taking down what they perceive to be threats against them. They usually do this through somewhat mild internet tactics (like DDoS attacks, or broadcasting personal information, etc.) in addition to the use of real-world attacks (like ordering hundreds of pizzas, sending black faxes to companies they dislike, etc.) in order to get their point across. They are called Anonymous because of the tenants of what could be called "their creed", which uses the anonymity inherent on the internet to mask their identities and avoid retribution. These attacks are easy to identify, simply by the content of the actual attack as well as the lack of any responsible party stepping forward (Anonymous tends to never admit to an attack, and when members do so, they are chastised on their forums for doing so).

However, because Anonymous lacks any sort of actual leader, their actual activity has been rather limited. In order to be selected as a target of this group, the individual or corporation generally has to have either:

1) Done something inhumane, illegal, or immoral in the eyes of Anonymous. Although this sounds fairly vague, I've found that the people who take part in this group tend to have a fairly accurate moral compass, somewhat obscured by what could be considered a rather twisted sense of humor.

or

2) Directly challenged Anonymous to a legitimate conflict. Though generally too lazy or preoccupied to care what the internet or people on it think of them, should someone make a legitimate threat against them (or, heaven forbid, make an attack on the sites where they congregate), they tend to unleash whatever they've got at the moment to strike that person/company down. Just ask Verizon.

All in all, though, you don't need to be afraid of Anonymous and their presence on the internet, unless you behave like a massive tool. I say this at some risk to my personal processor, but I also don't believe the "Anons" are something to be feared or revered. They're simply a group of people, with some moderate knowledge of networking and coding (among other basic "hacker" tricks), who occasionally band together against what they see as a great moral evil...

...or any ten year old boy stupid enough to challenge them to an internet pissing contest.

Only if your password is as unsecure and predictable as hers, and you don't change it when people start to threaten you, and you piss off a bunch of people.
