G20 Police Confiscate LARPing Gear

Police in Toronto confiscated a wide range of weaponry from G20 protesters over the weekend, including machetes, clubs, bear spray - and medieval fantasy gear belonging to one poor guy who was on his way to a LARP event in a nearby park.

It was a rough weekend to be in Toronto. The G20 was in town, which meant that showdowns between police and so-called "protesters" were inevitable. Sure enough, windows were smashed, fires were started, skulls were cracked and weapons were confiscated, some of which were later put on display for the press in order to demonstrate the extent of the danger faced by police.

Unfortunately, that plan backfired a bit. While most of the stuff was obviously dangerous, things got a bit awkward when Chief Bill Blair pointed out a number of arrows with tips covered in padding and socks, which he said were meant to be dipped in flammable liquid, set alight and, one would assume, fired at police. According to landscaper Brian Barrett, however, the arrows belonged to him and were part of his "live action role-playing" get-up that was seized by police while he was on his way to an event in Centennial Park [http://www.toronto.ca/parks/parks_gardens/centennial.htm].

Along with the arrows, police also displayed Barrett's scale mail armor, foam shields and padded clubs. Barrett said he was "appalled" to see that police had laid a machete across his armor, although whether that was because of the implied connection between the two or the fact that they were mussing up his fine scale shirt wasn't made clear. He did say, however, that he was worried people who see him in the future might think, "Oh my god, that's one of the terrorists from G20."

Also on display were gas masks, spray paint, a replica gun, saws, knives, a slingshot, chains and handcuffs, along with other not-necessarily-dangerous gear like bandannas, bicycle and skateboard helmets, golf balls and goggles. The Toronto Police are facing a growing wave of criticism over its handling of protests during the G20 summit, which saw significant levels of property damage, four destroyed police cars and more than 900 arrests.

Feckers. I remember when our LARP group got raided by the Armed Police.

(Don't ask)

The guys there were cool, one even said "We realised you were playing a game when one of the dead guys got up to have a fag outside".

Of course, the Chief Constable told a different story to the Paper, how "ARMED PRANKSTERS HARASS POLICE" and how our weaponary was "frighteningly realistic".

That'd be the orange waterguns then... Oh wait, he wasn't actually there to see them.

We still used that quote in our next advert. ;)

Police do love making fools of themselves.

Then again, in this situation it's better to be safe than sorry. It'd be a lot worse if he'd really been a protester and they'd believed a story about being a 'Larper', we'd have headlines about lax police letting a man with fire arrows going free and they'd just become worse.

I can't wait for the day that criminals tress like Robin Hood and rob people at padded-arrow-point.

Instead we have stories about police force backed by a $1.2 billion security budget rounding up and arresting 700 innocent people without cause hours after the riots ended, and detaining them in a warehouse for 23 hours with no food, water, or proper facilites - virtually none of whom were charged with any crimes.

Among the people arrested:

A toronto mayoral candidate who was observing the protests. A guy and his girl walking home from an evening out. A couple who had just left The Keg after dinner. A dude on his smoke break from work at a Pizza shop. 3 German tourists wandering the city sightseeing. The list goes on and on.

As hilarious as this story is, the G20 situation this last weekend was fucking disgraceful.

Absolutely fucking obscene.

Which is where my first sentence comes into play.

The worst thing about these kinds of things is that they always get away with it because they are the police. If they do get into trouble it'll probably be in 5 years time after someone looks back and demands an inquiry.

For some reason, i keep thinking the way they handled it was to have one policeman run up to the poor guy and yell out "STOP RIGHT THERE, CRIMINAL SCUM!"

Wouldn't be the Police if they didn't tried to make themselvs look like the "good guys" in the process, and be really idiotic and doucey in the process as well. That's just messed up, holding them in that warehouse.

The problem is, the directive and permission to do this came right from the PM's office. It's not even the police's fault per se. The Canadian government simply decided that this weekend, in toronto, the bill of rights was being suspended. Didn't matter who you were, or what you were doing - you were to be arrested.

It makes me sick to my stomach.

That sucks, I always thought the Canadian government was quite relaxed compared to the British one.

The G20 thing was such a fuck-up. We wasted 1.2 billion on that?

Also, hahah, funny read. I've seen this picture in Metro /24 newspaper today on a bus...

They kind of are. Except during the past week for G20...

Seriously, some of the things that happened- happened as in, "done by police" - on Sunday are just appalling.

This was stupidity on both sides really. The police for being ignorant overreacting retards. Though I am not sure if I can blame them with what they have to deal with when the G20 is in town.
But also on this guy for not using common sense. Seriously, now. Is he that ignorant of how reactive the law enforcement is during these summits or how the governments are in general to anything that could be taken as terroristy? (Yes, I made it up. No, you can't use it. Nyah)
Next time the G20 or anything that gathers protestors that like to set police cars on fire is in town? Go to the LARPing event in your civvies, with your supplies in a bag. And take the scenic route there. One that doesn't take you close to the cordon lines.
Let's dont forget the stupidity on the protestors here. I am not exactly sure what their platform is on all this, but their actions continually make their statement meaningless. All they are showing is they can be a bunch of destructive asses doing damage to public property which in turn hurts Canadian citizens in the whole.
Gandhi would not be proud.

After reading that, I should change the advice to this guy to just stay the heck home when these summits are in town. World of Warcraft won't get you arrested. (But trust the police to find a way when they are already hotheaded during these.)

Calumon: Don't get mad Matt. Jack thinks your adorable when acting natural!

Jack: Calumon, if you weren't so cute, and if the Escapist didn't complain so much, I would totally throw you across the room.

In all seriousness, that was awful. Police got a little too excited and began arresting everyone that was in a few mile radius. In fact... Toronto, is in Canada right? And Matt, you Live in Canada right? Yowch. If it makes you feel any better, our police sucks here too at times. They did pretty much the same thing when the G20 protest was going on, except without the LARP people, and instead killing someone by striking someone, and then pushing someone over, causing his organs to collapse.

G20 is doing more harm than good. Not that it's doing much good anyway, what with Politicians able to make decisions about as good as an Amnesiac looking at Warburtons and Hovis.
