I'm loving all the incredible bias in this thread. There were riots and protests going on. The Royal Bank of Canada was firebombed, vandalism ran rampant, police cruisers were set on fire, and numerous businesses were damaged. If you were outside during these riots and protests and were detained, well then maybe you should've realized the dangerous and violent actions going on (both by the police and the anarchists that claim responsibility for the acts) and stayed in your house.
Sometimes there are prices to pay for freedom, and perhaps not going into a highly-populated area during violent riots and protests should be one of them.
EDIT: I bet half the people in here wouldn't have bothered to even read the article had it not involved LARPing. Not saying everyone in here LARPs, it's just the thought of one of our nerdy brethren being detained pissed us all off.
