Kinect Man Says "Hardly Anyone" Plays PC Shooters Anymore

Microsoft's Kudo Tsunoda says "hardly anyone" plays shooters on the PC anymore because Halo [http://www.amazon.com/Halo-Reach-Xbox-360/dp/B002BSA20M/ref=sr_1_1?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285002869&sr=8-1] did such a great job of making the genre "all about the console."

Motion controls have a well-established reputation as just the thing for popping balloons or squeezing in some Pilates before the kids get home, but how they'll fare in the hands of core gamers remains to be seen. One of the potential stumbling blocks, Tsunoda told GameInformer [http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/09/18/-Talking-Kinect-With-Kudo.aspx], is that simply grafting a motion control setup onto existing games doesn't add up to a great gaming experience.

"You see a lot of motion control games that put the motion technology into a random game and that isn't the way to make an awesome experience," he said. "If you think about the way that first person shooters evolved, they started on the PC. People for the longest time tried to port shooters from the PC onto the console. And people said the same things that they are saying now about Kinect - 'It's never going to be responsive enough to do this,' or 'You're never going to get a fun first person shooter on the console - it's only made for a keyboard and mouse and that is the way it is supposed to be played.' And as long as everyone was just porting the existing shooters over to console, they weren't as fun as the PC ones. Of course, they were built for the PC."

It's a perfectly reasonable position to take: An optimized experience requires optimized controls. But then he went further.

"Halo did an awesome job of building a first-person shooter exclusively for the console, and now hardly anyone plays first person shooters on the PC anymore," he continued. "It's all about the console."

That strikes me as somewhat less reasonable. Dubious, even. Valve seems to be doing reasonably well with mouse-and-keyboard edition [http://www.amazon.com/Team-Fortress-2-Pc/dp/B00140S21O/ref=sr_1_1?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285003045&sr=8-1]. Tsunoda's point about Kinect may be valid, but his comments about PC shooters? Probably not so much.

Yeah, this guy is either ill-informed, a moron, trying to generate controversy, or just attempting to hype his product with no grasp on the effects.

Most likely the last one, but he is very wrong. I suck at console shooters and don't even bother with them since mouse and keyboard is such a far superior controlling mechanism for FPSs.

HAHA. I can't think of a more ignorant comment I have heard from someone in the industry. While FPS titles on console are more popular now (and it wasn't Halo that did that, it was GoldenEye007. Halo just took that and ran with it), PC still reigns supreme for FPS titles and RTS titles. Just look at all the major league gaming competitions. Most are on PC for the FPS grids (with the exception of Halo of course). This is because you simply cannot get the same precision out of a controller that you can out of a mouse and keyboard. The instant a console accepts mouse and keyboard input in an FPS, THEN we will see the console match the PC.

Even then, the upgradability of a PC will keep those players, who use hardware as well as time and skill to get the upperhand on their enemies.

From the Steam page:

66,415 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Multiplayer
65,164 Counter-Strike: Source
61,036 Counter-Strike
17,888 Football Manager 2010
13,746 Team Fortress 2
10,053 Left 4 Dead 2

That's not quite in line with his statements.

And it also scares me that 1.6 is still so popular.

So is he suggesting the Kinect is suitable for FPS games?
It strikes me as the least suitable. At least the others have something to point at the screen other than your finger...

Wait, who is this again?

In other news "Clueless man makes up facts".

Also, I don't know about the rest of you but i'm loving my version of Metriod Prime using the Wii motion controls. So just adding in motion controls can work very well in a FPS that is if you also have buttons you can use so I guess he's right, Kinect would be the only one that could not pull that off.

Oh dear.

All I've heard for years is how a mouse and keyboard were made for accuracy. He can go live in his Microsoft made hole like an ignorant person if he wants.

i must admit games i would of really liked to play multiplayer on my pc with (splintercell conviction mostly) dont seem to have anyone at all playing it....everyones either playing games on steam, playing CS or COD...nope thats all pc gamers play IMO :p i cant find any other of my games (and i have alot here) to play with anyone...

P.S. my sentances might not be rather well placed, i've just woken up and i rather disagree with the douche who was trolling that comment so much that even in my sleepy stage-ness i had to say something :p

P.S.S. i swear i read something on the escapist about how microsoft thought about making cross-platform games but the PC players won all the time so they thought it wouldnt be a good idea at all :D

Yeah, scary isn't it? Every one I know who plays 1.6 just get pissed when I try to tell them that there are better smoother fps games out there.

Well that officially wins the "Stupidest thing I've read all week" award, and considering it's freaking Monday I can only imagine how stupid something will have to be to top that. To a certain degree he has a point, in that a lot of the focus of "big budget development" for FPS titles has shifted in a console direction in recent years, but to assert that hardly anyone plays FPS games on their PCs these days because "Halo made it all about the console"? Bwah ha ha ha haaaa!

Seriously, that's just stupid.
