Tribes Back in Business As Persistent Shooter MMO

Cult-classic Tribes is coming back courtesy of Global Agenda studio Hi-Rez.

After more than five years in limbo, Global Agenda [http://www.amazon.com/Tribes-2-Pc/dp/B00004TJ2T/ref=sr_1_5?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1287954763&sr=1-5] developer Hi-Rez Studios, which has big plans for the franchise.

Hi-Rez CEO Erez Goren announced the news in the company's forums as part of Global Agenda's October update. While Goren regretfully told players that Hi-Rez was having trouble growing Global Agenda's code to incorporate larger warzones that would feature up to 100 players, he did reveal that the studio was developing this concept in an entirely different game using the Tribes license.

Hi-Rez's Tribes Universe will finally bring back the multiplayer shooter that featured jetpacks long before Halo: Reach [http://www.amazon.com/Halo-Reach-Xbox-360/dp/B002BSA20M/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1287955932&sr=1-1]. Though Tribes had multiple installments, with Irrational Games' Tribes: Vengeance incorporating single-player, the franchise is popular thanks to its up to 64-player multiplayer matches that take place on many different maps in various modes that give players freedom to customize their own characters in multiple ways.

Goren listed highlights of Tribes Universe that include three different factions, a non-instanced persistent world with territory control, huge outdoor maps, a focus on PvP, 100+ player battles, jetpacks, skiing, lots of weapons, and more. Hi-Rez now has two separate teams: one working on small-scale warfare in Global Agenda and another on large-scale warfare with Tribes Universe

Tribes players tend to be pretty hardcore into their multiplayer, so this is a great acquisition for Hi-Rez whose Global Agenda was inspired by Tribes anyway. Tribes Universe's alpha testing phase is expected to start in early 2011.

I remember Tribes!

I loved that ridiculous disk firing gun and the jetpacks... and the ridiculous vehicles. Hmm I wonder if I still have it lying around somewhere.

Cool. I always loved Tribes 1 and 2, but i disliked the art design in vengeance.
Im hoping that they will take more inspiration from tribes 2, i liked the vehicles there more.

It's free to download now, where it is, I don't know, but I know it's free now.

Could be interesting though I fear we may have to pay a monthly fee. That was always the worst part of WoW back when I played.

Thiiiiis could go badly. Bringing back this franchise is either going to inspire love, or flat faced hatred from the masses.
Looking forward to see how it develops but I'm worried about it :(

Hmm. This could either turn out to be one of my only high points of the year (in terms of game announcements) or just another one of those times when all I can do is shake my head and wonder "Why?"

The letters 'MMO' are an automatic warning flag to me for three reasons:

1) Subscription
2) Grind
3) Mandatory Interactions with the Inevitable Band of Online-Assholes
("This aint your daddy's Tribes", though God bless the original Tribes community for actually being fun, reasonable, and decent human beings in comparison to anything today)

And the words "Persistent Shooter" translate directly into "Spawn Camping Bots".
I've played some cheaper web-browser based persistent shooters..spawn camping was a serious problem there. Doubly so if there was an additional incentive to do so.

I'd never heard of Tribes until just now, but a shooter MMO sounds like my kind of game.

Better keep my eye on this one...

I'm just going to come out and say it. That picture looks very much like halo.

Ya, I will keep tabs on this game.
