I'd never heard of Tribes until just now, but a shooter MMO sounds like my kind of game.

Better keep my eye on this one...
Australian developed FPS series that owned the shit out of Halo by doing everything that Halo did before Halo did. AND DOING IT BETTER, sort of. Halo does have better AI. Pick up the Tribes:Vengence demo to see why this game was so good. It's still around on the internet, somewhere.
Or better yet, just download Tribes 2, like I did a few weeks ago. The entire game was released for free.

I won't deny I prefer Quake 3 (though I suck at that game as well) but I'll pay attention to this title. If it isn't bogged down by too much MMO nonsense then it may be the game that finally persuades me to upgrade - I have a habit of playing arena shooters years after their conception when they are regarded as 'mostly dead' by their communities, but this may be an exception.
...

Yep. It's true.

sup guys just dropping in to say I don't like Tribes

Tribes just never really did it for me. It speaks volumes, though, that my favourite game in the series was Vengeance - in other words, the one that wasn't so heavily focused on multi. I think my biggest problem with it, believe it or not, was the weapons. I just never liked Tribes guns. And by the time I got into it, well after Tribes 2 came out, the game was so heavily dominated by experienced players that n00blife was painful and discouraging, to say the least.

That said, this is worth keeping an eye on. The Tribes franchise has a lot of value and it always struck me as a bit odd that nobody ever picked it up and took a shot with it.

...Skiing?

Anyway, this looks promising. Maybe they'll be able to make Tribes Tribes, since they didn't do too well making Global Agenda Tribes. Zing.
From the TribalWar Wiki: Skiing is the accumulation of speed through jumping on the downslope and jumping in conjunction with jetting on the upslope. It can be performed in any armor, though it is most forgiving in light armor. It's used primarily to traverse large distances quickly and gain momentum, but can also be used to gain altitude.

Basically, its a physics exploit from Tribes 1 that was turned into a game mechanic in the later games.
Thanks for the clarification. That actually sounds fun as hell.

Base in T1 was never quite fun enough for me, but drop by a mod like Annihilation where nukes, flamethrowers, and everything else you can possibly dream of exist. It heavy hands the multiplayer, definitely, and I thought I would hate it and sure was lost on the server screen wondering where the SP selection was. The trick is to find a mod that is fun to play (mine was football back when that was alive) and then a server to play it in. The community is somewhat small in some mods so you start to get a real feel for the community. This was the golden age of dedicated servers and what PC gamers harken to when we get so POed that we don't get them anymore.

That said, if they can wreck this new project they will. Tribes being a FPS that truly used every axis for gameplay, and huge maps (HUGE) that could be traversed extremely quickly through combinations of missile jumps and skiing, would probably really shine in today's cover based shooter atmosphere. Tribes favors splash damage in general, with sniping only done on certain servers with certain weapons. Much easier to fly up and drop some mortars and nukes.

I highly doubt that the Global Agenda team would put a subscription on this game. They even removed it from GA, which was one of the main reasons I bought GA.

I just hope that they make the gameplay more like Tribes 2 than Tribes: Vengeance. I liked Vengeance, but I ended up just playing more UT2K4 instead, while Tribes 2 was very unique and fresh in its gameplay, and they removed a lot of stuff from Tribes 2 to its jump to Vengeance.

I'm very glad that they're bringing it back, and I think the Escapist should start its own group on there if we all end up joining the alpha. :)
