I'm just going to come out and say it. That picture looks very much like halo.

Ya, I will keep tabs on this game.
Wasn't Tribes out before Halo?

Looks cool; never played a Tribes game, might have to check it out. I tried Planetside for a bit, I really liked the concept but didn't like the feel of the game, so this looks cool to me. I have high hopes for Dust 514 as well :D.

To be completely honest, I do not know. I was just making the comparison of Art/Graphic design, but I know how people here react to Halo...

I'm more interested in Firefall, which is being made by the people from Tribes 1&2, than Tribes 3 from a new team (the same team that managed to turn Global Agenda into the train wreck that it is).

I used to play Tribes: Arial Assault, so I'm looking forward to this. I hope they get somehow try and look at putting this on consoles. It'd totally work.

Look, Starsiege: Tribes came out in 1998, that was 3 years before Halo, and I think you may be stepping on a lot of peoples' toes when you suggest that Tribes is somehow a Halo clone.

...Skiing?

Anyway, this looks promising. Maybe they'll be able to make Tribes Tribes, since they didn't do too well making Global Agenda Tribes. Zing.

From the TribalWar Wiki: Skiing is the accumulation of speed through jumping on the downslope and jumping in conjunction with jetting on the upslope. It can be performed in any armor, though it is most forgiving in light armor. It's used primarily to traverse large distances quickly and gain momentum, but can also be used to gain altitude.

Basically, its a physics exploit from Tribes 1 that was turned into a game mechanic in the later games.

Way to make a horrible Tribes MMO: create grinds where players need to "earn" certain weapons, armor, etc. This is where other FPS MMOs failed. Let's hope Hi-Rez Studios doesn't make the same mistake.

Hmm. This could either turn out to be one of my only high points of the year (in terms of game announcements) or just another one of those times when all I can do is shake my head and wonder "Why?"

The letters 'MMO' are an automatic warning flag to me for three reasons:

1) Subscription
2) Grind
3) Mandatory Interactions with the Inevitable Band of Online-Assholes
("This aint your daddy's Tribes", though God bless the original Tribes community for actually being fun, reasonable, and decent human beings in comparison to anything today)

And the words "Persistent Shooter" translate directly into "Spawn Camping Bots".
I've played some cheaper web-browser based persistent shooters..spawn camping was a serious problem there. Doubly so if there was an additional incentive to do so.
Exactly. A tribes MMO could be a success, but in order to do so they'll have to focus on the "persistent world" aspect of the game rather than the "level up your character through kills!" mechanic that so many other FPS games try to push.

I'll wait until I can see what they are going to do to it first. I heard global agenda wasn't even half as good as tribes ... so they may wreck it.

I'd never heard of Tribes until just now, but a shooter MMO sounds like my kind of game.

Better keep my eye on this one...
Australian developed FPS series that owned the shit out of Halo by doing everything that Halo did before Halo did. AND DOING IT BETTER, sort of. Halo does have better AI. Pick up the Tribes:Vengence demo to see why this game was so good. It's still around on the internet, somewhere.

If they ruin the tribes franchise with this silly level up nonsense I'll be very upset. FPS's are about your own skill, not the coolest gear.

That said I hope they include canyon crusade, and snowblind maps :D

Or better yet, just download Tribes 2, like I did a few weeks ago. The entire game was released for free.

I won't deny I prefer Quake 3 (though I suck at that game as well) but I'll pay attention to this title. If it isn't bogged down by too much MMO nonsense then it may be the game that finally persuades me to upgrade - I have a habit of playing arena shooters years after their conception when they are regarded as 'mostly dead' by their communities, but this may be an exception.
