James Cameron Commits to Avatar 2 & 3

James Cameron signed a contract with Fox to make two sequels to Avatar due out in 2014 and 2015 set on Pandora.

We should have all known that this was coming. The amazing success of Avatar launched the 3D fad and a thousand blue Navi cosplayers. It only makes sense for James Cameron to expand the story and universe of the planet Pandora through more visually breathtaking films. The director said that Avatar 2 and 3 are the next two films that he will make, but it's clear that these films are very early in the planning stage given that we won't see them for 4 or 5 years. Cameron's statement announcing his plans was full of platitudes.

"Avatar was conceived as an epic work of fantasy - a world that audiences could visit, across all media platforms, and this moment marks the launch of the next phase of that world," Cameron said. "With two new films on the drawing boards, my company and I are embarking on an epic journey with our partners at Twentieth Century Fox."

Cameron did say each of the two sequels will have complete stories. "In the second and third films, which will be self contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of Avatar's visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world. I'm looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild."

Of course, Fox is happy with the deal, as they will likely continue to print money-hats stamped with Avatar. "We had no higher priority, and can feel no greater joy, than enabling Jim to continue and expand his vision of the world of Avatar. This is a great day in the history of our company," Fox Film Entertainment Chairmen Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman said, probably simultaneously and with shit-eating grins on their faces.

I saw Avatar in 3D the day it came out and I was blown away. I know that there has been a backlash amongst the nerds that Cameron did nothing new and that the story was predictable garbage, but I genuinely liked the film and I hope that these sequels live up to it.

Plus, I hope we get to see Giovanni Rabisi reprise his role as the squirmy businessman Parker Selfridge. I love that guy.

2014, and 2015... Great... Hope the story is better this time. I liked 1, but its story wasn't as good as like District 9.

Yay... There will apparently be two more movies I can hate with a fiery passion.

It's Ribisi, Greg. :)

Also, "emotional horsepower"? Seriously, James?!

This could actually go really well, now that they've already got most of the character models and animation pre-done I'm hoping that there might be more concentration on storyline and introduce a couple of more interesting new characters. The "dark side" of the Pandora system could be an interesting direction...

So the Navi have been taken over and serve as forced labour for the humans. The run away and travel through some "underground rootroad" to safety. There's the second movie.

The third one, I don't know, the first Navi space president?

Edit: As I'm required by federal law when talking about Cameron or Dion with international audiences. "On behalf of Canada we appologize for this man and his undeserved ego. He used to be cool, we don't know what happened. Sorry, we're so sorry"

I genuinely enjoyed the first movie. I'm not sure if these will be as good, but I'll look forward to it, and judge it then.

Avatar had flaws, but the story itself wasn't one of them ("Unobtanium" was, though). I enjoyed the movie, just not enough for it to be nominated for Best Picture. Maybe the sequels will be good, but that really doesn't happen often. I'm not going to hold my breath.

Also, for a site full of nerds, I'm always surprised people don't say the plot is just Dune in the jungle.

I actually find the movies less annoying than the crazy subculture that has sprung up in the wake of them. It's just bizarre. I mean, my ancestors, the Cree natives of Canada and other tribes throughout the world, have been living and preaching oneness with the land for CENTURIES, and now all of a sudden because some naked blue giants in a movie do it, it's the cool thing to do and everyone's weeping about it? Seriously?

A few weeks ago, my husband and I were attending a tradeshow for his company (which is hydroponics and other gardening such things) and talking to one of the other vendors, an older, kind of crazy, massive hippy woman with a muumuu and long, wild gray hair. She had someone else with her and when I asked who it was, she responded with, "Oh, that's ____. I couldn't get along without her. She's in my Avatar clan, too." Then she went, "Aaaa-oooo!", that weird cry from the movie, and I swear to God we heard an answering cry from the other side of the room.

That was REAL. That HAPPENED. This 50+ year old woman pretends to be a blue space kitty that runs naked through the trees. We just kind of went "Ah... buh... huh." and wandered off, slightly dazed. I mean, what the hell do you say to that?

There was emotional horsepower to that movie? You know, I liked the film as it made for a decent flexing of technical power in the visuals department but that's as far as it went in my opinion. I didn't watch it in 3D and it was still a visual feast for the eyes and I honestly don't feel 3D would have made the experience any more "emotional" than it was.

That being said one would hope that now Cameron has gotten his proverbial rocks off in the visuals department he will focus more on crafting a better story for the sequals.

Funny, I just got around to watching Avatar. Good visuals, story was okay(I never saw Dances with Wolves, so any similarities would be lost on me), and, most importantly, self contained. There is absolutely no room for a sequel here. The "great time of sorrow" is over. The story is over. There was no cliffhanger, no loose ends. The humans got their asses kicked off the planet, and nothing shy of orbital bombardment is going to get them back on.

Pass.

I really liked Avatar. Haters gonna hate. It was also my first 3D movie ever, so that really made an impression on me.
Since I've never read/seen the book/movie/whatever Avatar is stealing its' story then i genuinely loved it. Go team Blu(e)!

Hmm...
Avatar was a decent movie with a perdictable plot and awesome effects. It was good but it isn't the type of movie that needs or should have sequels, it's like Titanic in a sense.

I haven't even seen the first, and have absolutely no interest to either.

It just looks so shallow.

Cool. I look forward to seeing them.

Shame about the 3D thing though.

Now let the hate flow.

The main disappointment for me about Avatar was that it took so long to make, and it felt so rushed and patchwork. Two sequels in quick succession can only mean obvious cash in, with little regards as to the content. But then, we already knew that, what with Avatar being re-released into the cinema this year with a whole 9 more minutes of crap put in. Face it, for the last 20 years, Cameron has been after the moolah, and would have made a sequel to Titanic if he could have

I'm giving these a preemptive "miss"

Why...WHY?

The first movie was terrible, but at least it was fairly tight, with no dangling plot threads.

Although Hollywood has always been one for milking something until it is drained of blood.
