I actually find the movies less annoying than the crazy subculture that has sprung up in the wake of them. It's just bizarre. I mean, my ancestors, the Cree natives of Canada and other tribes throughout the world, have been living and preaching oneness with the land for CENTURIES, and now all of a sudden because some naked blue giants in a movie do it, it's the cool thing to do and everyone's weeping about it? Seriously?

A few weeks ago, my husband and I were attending a tradeshow for his company (which is hydroponics and other gardening such things) and talking to one of the other vendors, an older, kind of crazy, massive hippy woman with a muumuu and long, wild gray hair. She had someone else with her and when I asked who it was, she responded with, "Oh, that's ____. I couldn't get along without her. She's in my Avatar clan, too." Then she went, "Aaaa-oooo!", that weird cry from the movie, and I swear to God we heard an answering cry from the other side of the room.

That was REAL. That HAPPENED. This 50+ year old woman pretends to be a blue space kitty that runs naked through the trees. We just kind of went "Ah... buh... huh." and wandered off, slightly dazed. I mean, what the hell do you say to that?
that is scary and sad.

This isn't going to end well. Any students of American History out there, back me up (since I'm probably gonna get something wrong). The first movie could very well be a good parallel for the battle of Little Big Horn. Now think back to what the US's response to that was. I forsee a serious downer ending.

edit: although it could be worse, it could be "Avatar: the Animated Series." I'm thinking Ewoks levels of horrible here.

Is there really enough room in the story for a sequel? I thought the film wrapped everything up into one giant happy ending: soldier-boy is reborn as an alien, evil army/corporation is stopped, the end. The sequel is probably going to suck unless it's nothing but Navi porn.

Avatar had flaws, but the story itself wasn't one of them ("Unobtanium" was, though). I enjoyed the movie, just not enough for it to be nominated for Best Picture. Maybe the sequels will be good, but that really doesn't happen often. I'm not going to hold my breath.

Also, for a site full of nerds, I'm always surprised people don't say the plot is just Dune in the jungle.
Thank you! Avatar completely ripped off Dune. I thought i was the only one who saw this. You sir have earned my heartfelt respect, and you have made my night.
I honestly thought I was the only one who saw the glaring similarities.

When I first saw this, my initial reaction was negative, but then I realized that James Cameron has already made two of the best movie sequels of all time (Aliens and Terminator 2).

Awesome. Perhaps in the third movie, they'll be able to drop the saran wrap-thin allegory and introduce five rings that summon a silver Na'vi with a green mullet.

Quite the challenge. I've seen few fantasy/sci-fi films were the story feels more final, and where I get such a strong feeling of so little left to explore. (Not because Avatar was very detailed in its exploration of Pandora and the Na'vi, but because the Na'Vi culture simply was not very believable, detailed or interesting, and because Pandora mostly seemed like a collection of (fortunately) toned-down fantasy clichés and over-saturated jungles.)

I doubt that Cameron is up to it. But equally, or even more so, breathtaking scenery would probably draw me in for a second coming. A third, unless the storytelling grows drastically better, not quite as likely.

Plus, I hope we get to see Giovanni Rabisi reprise his role as the squirmy businessman Parker Selfridge. I love that guy.
It's Ribisi, Greg. :)

Also, "emotional horsepower"? Seriously, James?!
Yea we all know that saying Avatar sucks is the cool thing to do, but the truth is, it doesn't suck- it just has self-perpetuating popularity and is very overrated.....kinda like Halo. It certainly doesn't deserve the title of #1 highest grossing movie, but it's not nearly as bad as most of the dribble that hits theatres, and the extreme hatred is unwarranted.

Dances With Wolves wasn't the first to tell this story. I could find dozens of near-perfect matches for the story of most movies coming out today. The fact that we are ignorant of them is the only reason we don't rage over it in a similar way. The popularity of Dances With Wolves is a major cause of all this hate, and that movie's popularity is due to the fact that it has a GOOD STORY. That's right- Avatar too, has a GOOD STORY. It may be incredibly cliche and overdone, but these are byproducts of the story's success and popularity and don't mean that it's in any way bad. It's just not very original. IMO, the setting, the minor story elements, and the science fiction make up for this fact.
If there's one thing to complain about in Avatar, it's the acting, which was subpar, but not terrible.

I liked Avatar, but don't want a sequel. The ending was very conclusive. Why mess it up?

Cameron really likes to give himself a tongue-bath, doesn't he? That was an awful lot of self praise.

For it to be a ripoff of Dune, Jake would have had to been crowned "Emperor of the known universe" at the end of the movie. Also there would have been more emphasis on Jake as being the "Destined Chosen One" of Na'vi legend. I can see some overlap in the "He who controls the spice, controls the universe"-bit, but "Dances with Wolves meets Tarzan" seems more apt.

Can't there just be one film anymore? Avatar's ending was decisive enough.
Silly human! You with your glands and 'feelings' seem to have forgotten that anything that makes money will never, ever have closure. Closure doesn't sell.

Predictions for Avatar 2!

It will be pretty. Humanity will bring about hitherto-unmentioned weapons of mass doom. The Avatar will destroy the biggest and/or most threatening. Despite that victory, the tree will be either severely damaged or, destroyed. Also, right before the credits, it would be neat to see an armada of those huge death-bringing tools of destruction so as to up the ante for the 3rd film.

The 3rd film...will go down like Return of the Jedi I assume. I am also going to assume they bring in the Dark-Link aspect (meaning another Avatar used by the humans to destroy and possibly replace the original protagonist)

I haven't seen the first one yet and just might fix that for the re-release...in 2D.
