We all have our opinions I guess, but that story is an age old classic. If you think Avatar has a bad story, then you think that Pocahontas has a bad story.

How about this time make a na'vi villain?

Or at the very least, a na'vi who's less than morally sacrosanct...

I hope that they make the next ones interesting. All the first one had going for it was the fantastic visuals.

Yea we all know that saying Avatar sucks is the cool thing to do, but the truth is, it doesn't suck- it just has self-perpetuating popularity and is very overrated.....kinda like Halo. It certainly doesn't deserve the title of #1 highest grossing movie, but it's not nearly as bad as most of the dribble that hits theatres, and the extreme hatred is unwarranted.

Dances With Wolves wasn't the first to tell this story. I could find dozens of near-perfect matches for the story of most movies coming out today. The fact that we are ignorant of them is the only reason we don't rage over it in a similar way. The popularity of Dances With Wolves is a major cause of all this hate, and that movie's popularity is due to the fact that it has a GOOD STORY. That's right- Avatar too, has a GOOD STORY. It may be incredibly cliche and overdone, but these are byproducts of the story's success and popularity and don't mean that it's in any way bad. It's just not very original. IMO, the setting, the minor story elements, and the science fiction make up for this fact.
If there's one thing to complain about in Avatar, it's the acting, which was subpar, but not terrible.
Did I say that Avatar sucking was, in fact, the universal truth?

Nope. What I did say is that I hated this movie. I did.

The setting was something out of rejected Star Wars planets, nobody is in any way likeable, it has stock villains, a main hero with the charisma of a tree, "subtle" hints about ecology and the Iraq war which are not subtle at all and fairly boring action.

That movie, for me, not only didn't live up to the hype, but didn't live up to the standards I expect to get in sci-fi movies.

It wasn't smart, wasn't clever, the story was one of the worst I've ever seen, ever, and the only things I kind of liked about it were the score and the camera work.

It's nothing like Halo. Halo is a little pretentious, but it's not condescending.

Oh joy. I can expect another two movies with a cliched plot (not so much because it was similar to Dances with Wolves, but because it is a James Cameron film and you can tel right off the bat who's good, who's evil, and who's going to start off working for the evil guys but then have a change of heart and help the good guys). I'm also guessing that right after each film is released we're going to hear about an extended version 6 months later that just has 30 minutes of glory shots of pandora.

Oh goody. So now I have to make two more satirical names for James Cameron's "Pocahontas: Blue Furry Edition".

I'd better get right on that.

While I loved Avatar, I'm not expecting much out of its sequels, but then again this is James Cameron, who made 2 near perfect movies that were both sequels, Terminator 2 Judgement Day and Aliens
I don't think Avatar 2 or 3 will be as good as 1 but hey who knows!

iv heard the second is based on more of the oceans of pandora, and the third explores the surrounding planets

I read James Corden Commits to Avatar 2 & 3 for a second then, would have made sense since Avatar wasn't funny.

I'm looking forward to being amazed by number 2 and kind of disappointed with number 3.

Pocahontas was just as one dimensional as Avatar. Or rather, Avatar was just as one dimensional as Pocahontas.

Cookie-Cutter 'Evil Corporate White Men' don't cut it for anyone anymore, except those who hate 'Evil Corporate White Men'.

Also, I feel obliged to post this (long and silly) review.

Awesome. I can't wait for some pretty pictures and more Dances With Wolves... in space!
Can people stop saying this? It wasn't clever or a shock 6 months before the movie came out, it is plain retarded now. "Oh look! It's 'Dances with smurfs in space fern gully'! There are parallels and this is the first time a similar story has ever, ever happened... EVER!"

Avatar had flaws, but the story itself wasn't one of them ("Unobtanium" was, though). I enjoyed the movie, just not enough for it to be nominated for Best Picture. Maybe the sequels will be good, but that really doesn't happen often. I'm not going to hold my breath.

Also, for a site full of nerds, I'm always surprised people don't say the plot is just Dune in the jungle.
"Unobtainium" is a term that's used for something that is really useful but a fucker to find.

Off Topic: I'll say this once.. Pirates of the Caribbean 4 is coming out next year.. says everything about Hollywood.. if they can find a cash cow, they'll milk it till it's udders bleed..

I liked the first movie but the next two will therefore need to be more epic which then makes them look silly.. I hope they will be good though..

Fuck me... He is making a sequal. The plot I could see coming from miles away (and the only thing that would have shocked me was the humans winning at the end), but it was a beautiful movie. But now I cant feel this is anything but an attempt at making more money.

Though maybe I shouldnt write this off yet, I mean, the story can only get better, right?

[sub]...no, probably not...[/sub]
