Rumor: High School Musical Heartthrob Offered Lead Role in Akira Movie

The beleaguered live action Akira movie may have found its leading man in Zac Efron.

Remakes of cult classics tend to inspire equal amounts of delight and dread, with the balance shifting one way of the other depending on how things progress. Casting choices are often especially good at tipping the scales, and the rumors of who has been offered the lead role in the live-action Akira [http://www.amazon.com/Akira-Blu-ray-Mitsuo-Iwata/dp/B001LMU182/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1289089334&sr=8-1] movies is certain to be divisive.

Sources suggest that Zac Efron has been offered the part of Shotaro Kaneda, the teenaged leader of a Japanese motorcycle gang who is drawn into a word of intrigue and secrets when his best friend Tetsuo is discovered to possess immense and nigh-uncontrollable psychic powers. The character will presumably be renamed to something more Western sounding, along with pretty much everything else in the movie. In fact, one draft of the script scrapped the Neo-Tokyo setting of the original in favor of "New Manhattan." The screenwriter has changed [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101499-Akira-Movies-Engine-Still-Revving] since them, but it would make sense if the movie was set in the US.

It's impossible to say whether Efron would be any good in the role, partially because Akira would be unlike anything he's done before, but mainly because we don't know what the part will actually be. The two movies are supposedly based on the original Akira manga [http://www.amazon.com/Akira-1-Katsuhiro-Otomo/dp/1935429000/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1289089359&sr=8-3], rather than the 1988 anime, but Warner Bros. is said to be aiming for a PG-13 rating, which may mean a lot of content gets cut or otherwise altered. Ultimately, with so little information, any speculation comes with a pretty significant margin of error.

I think I speak for several people when I say 'NO!'

But a fairer argument would be, can he pull it off without being a complete twonk?

Well I would say Akira was the best anime ever made so either way turning it into a film is going to be a bad move but now they just seem to want to spit all over it.

In this thread, people will complain about having Efron play the role while not taking into account how he is actually a damn fine actor.

Seriously, just because he was in HSM doesn't mean he is shit. He made a hell of a lot of money off of those movies too. Best damn business decision he could have made in my mind.

Wow, the rare "Fail before creation". Nice.

Seriously, live action reboot to an Anime to be led by a mouseketeer? Seriously who in their right mind would think this would be an idea that would sell to people and why do they still have a job?

Efron is a fine young actor, and he does have the POTENTIAL to play crazy roles, what I don't like is that they want to make Akira PG-13. A rated R animation into a live-action PG-13 movie. No...just no

If they make it PG-13...it won't be Zac Efron's fault. I don't know why anyone would do such an injustice to Akira by making it PG-13. Ugh.

Zac Efron is actually a pretty talented actor and I certainly do not doubt his ability to take up this role. Don't hate on him because of his other acting roles. He had to break into the scene somehow.

I want to see this now. It may be actually good. Like how Will Smith was considered for the role of Neo in The Matrix. Don't tell me you wouldn't want to at least see a screentest of that.

I'm going to give him a chance on this one. I recently realized that he was not the douchebag that I thought him to be. But so help me god if he fucks this up I will... complain about it, seeing as how I cannot get to him and kill him.

Oh my, let the rage-ing begin....

I personally liked Zac Effron in Me and Orson Wells, so I don't dis him for being in HSM. But I don't know how I'll feel of a live action version of Akria, it's style seemed to best fit the story, so having it with real people will be very weird........

Hey, he's a pretty good actor from the little I've seen him in.

Sure, he was in HSM, but he's obviously trying to break away from that.

Essentially this. After seeing this and other posts here, I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices this guy's talent. He may make a decent Kaneda.

I just don't see how Akira could be made PG-13. Part of what made that movie work was the brutal, cringe inducing violence. There was this element of pure evil present that wouldn't have been there, at least it wouldn't be as strong, if it wasn't for that violence. Also, Hollywood has made no good anime-to-American-films. At all.

What... WHAAAAT?
I realise that AKIRA has been supposedly on the 'to be remade' list for a good decade now, and never seems to stay consistent, but honestly? Well at least it wasn't offered to Beiber, but give it five years when they actually start production and it won't surprise me.
I remember when people were saying Leonardo DiCaprio would be the lead- I didn't mind that so much.

They had BETTER not mess up Tetsuo.
(Oh, and Post 666 by the way).
